Hello, I was an apprentice rigger from 1968 to 1972 when I graduated. I stayed another year and then left for employment elsewhere. One of the guys that I was in the apprenticeship with was Tom Fusco. I think he became a General Foreman. Another guy I knew was Tom Rush, he was also in 72 shop. Do you have any information on these guys. I don’t see either one in the email links. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hey Gary,Roy McFall was also my good friend. He welded x-ray butts on the Cat steam and he was good! When we got spread to the four winds,I ended up in Corpus Christi,Texas at the army depot.Helicopters we fixed instead of ships. Not long after arriving in the mid 90's I noticed An announcement for a wg-10 welder.I called Philly, knowing how the vsip was supposed to work, but PNSY wasn't aware of the opening.Anyhow that got straightened out and I was so happy when Roy showed up.He definitely was not. They hired him as a wg-8 and he was mad .For months he practiced welding thin gauge titanium and he got the wg-10 he had been screwed out of.We both eventually retired and when he died we all lost an exceptionally good man.

Henry: I worked with a few guys in Bldg. 1 after the yard closed and some people were relocated from Bldg. 87 to Bldg. #1, including Ed Stairiker, Tony La Vigna, Fred Radtke, and Johnny (cant remember his last name, but he was a little guy with alot of h.p. within himself. Haven't seen or talked to any of them since I retired in 2005. Rode with Ed for a few years, wow, what a ride as he was a real "MotorHead" and liked fast cars who was another go getter. Tony LaVigna was a big hit with me, I felt he was one of my uncles.....lol. Good head on his shoulders, street smart and a cool guy with alot of great stories from yester-year. Probably one of the people I have met in my life that I will never forget.

Hello Julio,

The Department of the Navy is stepping up its recruitment efforts for Wounded Warriors. The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division is on-board with this effort and I am coordinating the intake of applications.

I'd like to post the attached job opportunity announcement on the Yardbird Webpage in the event that some of our former co-workers may know veterans who meet the eligibility criteria, i.e., 30% or more servie-connected disability and honorable discharge.

I recently found your website while seaching for information about the ship yards.....my late Grandfather spent 18 months there during WW2 working on installing the teak wood deck on the USS New Jersey.

I would like to find some pay records or pictures of the New Jersey as it was being built. My Grandfather was so very proud of his service during that time...and talked about it often....

When viewing the picture slide show for the New Jersey....I was very excited to see what looked like a group picture of some of the workers...I would love to get copies of the pictures...especialy the group picture....my Grandfather never seemed to miss an opportunity to get in a picture....anyway please let me know if those pictures or any others you think I might be interested in are available for sale...

My Grandfathers name was: Willard or Bill Heidig or WJ Heidig and was from Scanton Pa. he was a carpenter.

It was recommended to me to post a comment on this site by an ex-YardBird. I hope it will be helpful. I am an attorney and have practiced asbestos law for over 20 years. As you know, asbestos products were widely used at PNSY and aboard ships. Unfortunately, asbestos still remains a serious concern. Mesothelioma and lung cancer are the leading asbestos-related cancers that affect thousands each year.

Even though you may have been exposed 30, 40 or 60 years ago, there is still a chance of developing mesothelioma, lung cancer or asbestosis.

The good news is there is something you can do if you are diagnosed with an asbestos condition. There is help for the person who is sick and for their family. Please let me know
if you have any questions.

Please remember to get yourself tested regularly as early detection could save your life!

Thank you,

Is the Saratoga cv -60 at the yard? Steve

Good Morning - My name is Bob Zetterberg. I am looking for a one line diagram or schematic drawing of the “fire Room” of a Garcia Class DE 1040 (destroyer escort). I hope to make a model of the fire room.

I was the first engineering officer (plank owner) of USS Bradley DE 1041. Bradley & Garcia were both built by Bethlehem Steel in San Francisco. Bradley was commissioned on 15 May 1965 and was the first of its class to go to Vietnam. Her fire room was of new design boilers. (Two Foster Wheeler, 1200 psi steam generators with Elliott superchargers). Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard built an operating fire room complete with FW Pressure Fired Steam Generator and Elliott Supercharger, Before engineering personnel reported on board it was required for officers and crew to attend this school. I was hoping you might be able to help me locate a schematic drawing or one line drawing of this installation or advise me as to where I might locate this information.

Again, any information you might have that would help me with this project would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Bob Zetterberg

Hey Renee !!! Put me down for next year !!! Jack got hitched eh...well well well... I weathered the storm OK, and I hope all of y'all did. The sun came out, and we all I hope said a little prayer of deliverance. I remember when we had to tie the timeclocks down a few times with blocks from the drydocks. the one outside of 990 especially, and all the cleanup we had to do before they hit, but it was all fun, and I wish we'd still be working there, turning out good products the Navy was proud of. I miss my family !!! A few other nicknames comes to mind in our shop and others... Jay Bird, Belt Buckle Bob, The Man, The Speckled Chicken, Spanky Joe the boss, Hitler (Fred Schmick GF), The Ho Daddy (X-11),The Hummer (x-26), Little Herby (x-26), Joe M..... F...,The Nuss Brothers, A. Nuss & P. Nuss, Blinky (x-17 F/L). All were good shipmates, and we had a lot of fun. Cheers to all be well.....

Hi Guys.

I just got word from Jack Balkir regarding the reunion. Jack's life has taken a wild and excitingly busy turn - he is getting married this weekend - in the hurricane - so we will wish him luck.

Understandably so, he has run out steam and time in the event planning of this magnitude department. The reunion will be postponed until next year - spring maybe? We will stay on top of it and hopefully combine efforts to coordinate our milestone reunion for next year. Meanwhile, this gives us all the opportunity to further pass the word and get our lists of friends together along with their contact information. I will be willing to take names and pass them to Jack as well. The last he posted, he needed confirmation of 200 people to get the New Jersey. It might be a big help to gather names now? If you want to copy me, I will keep track of this. We can help! Thanks!

Hang in there this weekend, everyone ---- batten down the hatches!!!

If you have any questions, email!
Thanks

I was a yardbird as an insulator, in x057 then in the carpenter shop I had some of the best years of my life there and met many great workers there also. I can remember a huge snowstorm we had in the mid 80's and learning that the yard was open, I drove in, and upon arriving there, was greeted by one other worker, Irv Quenzel. Between him and myself, we managed to shovel all our walkways around our shops. Great fond memories. I wouldn't trade those memories at all as they mean alot to me. Great to finally come across this website and hear from other yardbirds, hey y'all great to hear from you

I want to bring her ashes up to Phila for a memorial but need to find a place to hold it where there would be a way to hold a video presentation. I cant seem to find a church that is available during the summer up there. We lived in Mt. Airy. I could use a little help. Do you have any suggestions? In case you are wondering who is or was Whitey Hutchinson I'll fill ya in. Back in '66 we were hired in the Helper to Journeyman Program in 11 Shop. At the time I had no idea what a " Shipfitter Helper " even did. Anyhow, a bunch of us started off in 541 Bldg and we were assigned to a Journeyman Shipfitter. Now the fun begins. At that time you could not get a sticker to park inside the yard unless you had 20 years. If you had a carpool you could get a sticker. In our carpool we had a real crew. Johnny Hance who recently passed away was one of the riders and he always kept us in stiches. There were Marines on the gates then and they checked your I.D's coming in AND going out. Sometimes they would bend down to get a better view of your I.D. John was in the back seat and when the Marine looked in to see his card John had a water pistol behind the card and you guessed it !! SQUIRT, SQUIRT and " Lets get out of here ". back to Whitey Hutchinson,,He had the bad luck to be our Foreman in 541 bldg. To say that John drove this man crazy is an understatement. When Whitey kept asking John "Are you going to punch the clock Hance. As Tony Alessandrine said eariler, the next sound you heard was the glass on the timeclock breaking. Too funny. Don't want to take up too much space so I'll sign off for now. More to follow if anyone is interested, Danny O' God Bless Our Troops !!

Want to say Hi to all my fellow Yardbirds. Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays.
I'd also like to strongly suggest that you keep getting your annual chest x-rays,wether your work pays for it or not. The place where I'm at for the last seven years doesn't. Last August I had one & found out that I have lung cancer. Have done the chemo & radiation & I believe its been caught in time. Still have to go for some more tests. So do yourself a favor GET A CHEST X-RAY EACH YEAR.

Jack D'Alonzo, 26 Shop third shift passed away Wednesday,Feb. 23 ,2011 at his home. Jack was a helluva welder and a quiet man who I had the good fortune to work with while on third shift. Guys like Jack just pass away without hardly a noise. A Army vetern Jack always kept to himself with the gang of Production Welders on third shift. Most who worked at the Yard knew little or nothing about the work this gang performed. They clocked in, did their job and clocked out. Jack clocked out for the last time. RIP JACK !! Visitatation after 9:30 a.m. Feb. 1 at St. Eugene's Church, 200 Oak Ave. Primos . Funeral Mass at 11 a. m. Burial : SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield.

It's a frigid 65 degrees here in Corpus Christi.I miss the yard, the people but not the cold weather.I remember fighting a blizzard in the 80's on 12-8 shift so the day shift could operate but they closed it down anyway.
We fought for every project, day in and day out, and we were the best.Nobody can take that away.

Here's my favorite Shipyard Christmas memory:

Last day before holiday shutdown, 1994. Everyone knows this is our last Christmas at the Yard. Foot stamping cold grey morning. Hop on the shuttle. It's the Oldies bus, packed. Gene Autry comes on the boombox. A couple of guys start to sing along. Before you know it, the whole bus is singing "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," really belting it out. Then cheers, laughter, happy conversation. I still smile every time I think of it.

AKER PHILLY ON THE WAY OUT

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc., (APSI), warns in its report for the third quarter that it will probably (i.e. certainly) close in the Spring, after delivering Hull #16, the twelfth product carrier for OSG.  I will post the report here when I get a copy.  No surprise, though.  Did anyone think there was more work in the pipeline for this yard?  Well, maybe some of the Norwegian investors thought so.  If they have a complaint, they should take it to OSG: back in 2005, OSG management was talking about extending the series to 25 ships.  This is sad news for all the good people in Philly who put a lot into this operation and made it a success in almost every area, but there's no rational way to keep it alive without an economical workload.  Shipyard folks rarely have difficulty finding new jobs and the industry as a whole is not struggling, but the openings are on the Gulf Coast.  It will be really interesting to see what the City of Philadelphia does with the yard: expect a lot of insanity from the politicians.

The Forrestal is docked right outside Bldg. 543 adjacent to Drydock 1. Bldg 543 is now the Headquarters for Urban Outfitters. Drydock 1 is being converted into a kind of public gathering place where Urban Outfitters currently stages some small employee events like a Farmers Market but, from the looks of the set up, may be planning for additional outdoor events. The backdrop of the Delaware River and the Forrestal is great. This isn't the Shipyard that we worked at that's for sure. I will try to send a photo.

Hello!

I’m an ex-yardbird from 26 shop. I retired from federal service last year and have been doing quite a bit of writing. I’ve been researching a monument I recall that was on Broad Street near Porter dedicated to shipyard workers who died while serving their country. I can’t recall if it was to workers who died in the line of duty or who were killed on the job at the shipyard, or both.

If there is any chance you recall such a monument or can lead me to a source where I might learn more about it I would greatly appreciate it (unless, of course, this monument is a figment of my imagination.) Thanks, and nice job with the website. I enjoyed reminiscing.

Hello there everyone !!! I guess most of you saw the little blurb on Fox's Good Day Philadelphia about a torpedo being found in Port Richmond. You guys from Bldg 543 should remember this, as it sat ouside the shop near the decompression chamber for many years, but no one in x-56 has stepped forward to identify it, and make a plea to save it with the Bomb Squad (215)685-8013 before it gets torched and is gone forever. Some of the big shots in x-56 should call them, and try to get it back. The link for the story is www.myfoxphilly.com/ddp/news/local_news/torpedo-found-in-port-richmond-lot We HAVE to save our heritage !!! Evidentaly the scrap hauler the 'yard had contracted in 1996 hauled it off to under the Platt Bridge where he hired peons to go through the dumpsters and sort out all the 'loot' he got from the 'yard's buildings the torpedo among them, and I assume that the scrapyard there in Butler Street & Aramingo Ave., bought it for the steel, and the fellows that said it was in the river wanted to haul it to another dealer and sell it to buy more booze. The scrap dealer the 'yard contracted became a millionaire. A day late and a dollar short to save this now I think, but someone can at least try. C'mon 17 shop !!! let's have a good turnout this year !!! All you cheapos in the shop with boxing gloves on your hands so as to not reach in your pockets to put up 25 bucks, and spend a few hours with your friends...shame on you !!!! I'll be there !!!

We must meet the minimum number of 125 by July 31ST or that date is gone & we start over again. I know we can do this, come on yardbirds let's get the word out, I know we can do more than the 34 who responded to us so far. I put an event notice out on my Facebook page , but we need to reach the people who don't have computers or email. It will be a great time! Who were the hungriest overtime hounds at the Yard? I have to vote 38 Shop. Here's why: In the early fall of '84 I was detailed to work with 38 out on the Forrestal. I was assigned to Jimmy Barnes' gang on the flight deck. They had been doing seven twelves for about 6 months. Some guys never missed a day. Come the end of November I was waiting outside the bosses' trailer to ask Barnes if I could have the day after Thanksgiving off. Inside I could hear a lot of hollering and cussing. Out stomped one of his regulars, shouting, "It's not fair! It's not fair!" Uh oh, I thought, I'm not going to get that day off. When I got inside, Barnes says to me, "Do you believe that guy? He's (ticked) off 'cause I won't let him work on Thanksgiving Day!" Now that was a hungry guy!

I was just reading some of the comments posted on the Web site. I have to agree with Tony Pizzo, I too can work with anyone--having worked with some of the nicest, kind, tough, funny, devilish, helpful, and quirky people at the 'yard. I also cut my teeth working in the shop (81). Working at the 'yard taught me to have great patience, a trait that I rely on constantly. If you worked at the 'yard, being employed anywhere else is (was) a cake walk! I can say that I truly miss the people that I worked with and have to thank each and everyone who came in and out of my life there, whether good or bad. Every experience was a teaching one. It is sad to read the obits and realize how many great people have passed. Cherish the memories, this is how we can keep the 'yard alive in our hearts!

A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. This is the fourth and probably final time getting laid off at Global Assoc. It's the contractor that maintains the mothballed fleet at PNSY. Tony Reina, ex38 boss, and I worked together for them until he got let go back in '08. I've been laid off twice since then. Hal Thommason, ex38, from all the flight decks, was my last boss there. John DiTroia is still the rigger boss there as far as I know. Global is now down to three "mechanics" and two helpers; a far cry from what they once had. Anyone want to chat, you got my address. Maybe I'll shovel somemore of the blizard snow. NOT!!! Bye for now.

Tom

Julio,

My name is Patricia Brow. I'm not sure if you can help me or not. If not, then perhaps you can direct this email to someone who can.

In August 1950 a young Navy WAVE, named Ann Victoria Barrett, was found dead in what was then called Canoe Lake, in League Island Park. She was assigned to the Photo Lab, at Mustin Field, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Ann had been at a tavern, called The Bucket, with several friends on Monday, August 21. She went out to the car, to take a nap, but when her friends went to the car a short time later Ann was discovered to be missing. Her friends reported her missing when she failed to report for duty the following morning. Her body was discovered about 36 hours later, on August 23. My mother and Ann were dear friends, having been stationed there together, and as far as my mother knows Ann's murder was never solved. I have been in contact with Ann's niece, one of the few remaining members of Ann's family, and Ann's family also believes her murder to be unsolved.

I have been researching Ann's murder for my mom, and now for Ann's family. I came across your website while researching the PSNY. Would you be willing to post Ann's story on your website, asking that anyone with ANY information about Ann's murder contact me? I realize that almost 60 years have passed since Ann's murder but maybe one of the "old timers" recalls this or a "youngster" recalls a friend or family member talking about it.

My mailing address is 1150 S Colony Way #3-171, Palmer, Ak 99645. My email address is gracie1953@msn.com.

Thanking you in advance for any assistance you can give,

Patricia Brow

Hilarious recap of that snowstorm!! HAHAHAH. You were right! 3 months into the apprenticeship and no leave time!! I remember I was 19 years old and didn't have a car yet - had to bum a ride home. Not too disastrous, thank God my whole family worked there!!!! I couldn't believe we never got a snow day. Even when the ice storm hit in 91 or 92 I think, we didn't find out the yard was going to be closed until we were already in work for 3 hours and the bridges were blocked off. Sat in the Penrose diner for 8 hours until we could get out of Philly and home... yep... back to work in the morning! Too funny. I had to get in trouble to get a legitimate day off dammit! HAHAHAH.

Wishing you well for 2010!

I hear you are still at the mint? Back with Navy for me.

Hi my name is Don Barder and I am trying to locate some old information on my Great Grandfather. I have his particulars as follows:

· Michael Joseph Sullivan
· Lived at 3054 Rorer Street, Kensington Philadelphia
· Born 1986 and worked at PNSY.
· In 1942 I have Draft registration Card that states he is 45 years old and he worked in Shop 26

I miss the place!
We had something for everybody there. You hear our elected officials crying about needing training for young people to learn life skills they can actually use. We had that how many apprentices went on to become leaders? They shut it all down. I am still asking why? Seems as though we are still spending Govt. Money on these things with marginal success. Ok off my soap box! Uncle is making me retire so no more excuses for missing our reunions because the war keeps getting in the way. I think four combat tours in three different wars is enough. My hat is off and a salute to all of you who keep the spirit alive that was one of the best places to work in philly!

Hey Julio,
I remember that day as well! We got something like 32 or 33 inches . I didn't have to trudge thru the snow to East Lot because i did not start my 9 year navy yard "career" until 1987. I just remember having off from school that day and frollicking in the snow as a youngster.

Currently i am employed at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard as a welder. Ain't i lucky??!!

Ron, I remember that day.

I took a half day annual and it took me four hours to get out of the East parking lot.  I didn't have a shovel in the car and had to kick the bumper high snow out from in front of the car.  By the time I got out of the lot, the people who got off at four were leaving.  I should have saved the annual!

Sitting here watching the blizzard outside my window, I am reminded of the big snowstorm on Feb 12, 1983. It was a Friday and the snow piled up all day. The "other side"
of the yard was sent home at 1:00pm. A 31 Shop apprentice with 3 months time, I had no leave left after the Christmas shutdown. I thought they would send us home too. Didn't
happen. The 4 o'clock walk (no shuttle busses running) from X31 to the East Lot was like climbing Mount Everest. Pellets of ice and snow biting the face, snow about a foot and a
half deep. My little VW Bug buried. It took me three hours to go the 8 miles to my home in Collingdale. Next morning my back door was blocked by a 4 foot drift. I sat in my kitchen with a coffee, listening to KYW. "The Philadelphia Navy Yard is open and all scheduled employees are expected to report." Wow. Lots of great memories from the Yard. Best wishes, yardbirds, for a Merry christmas and a happy, Healthy New Year.

I read Mr Daley's comments from last June and felt I had to say something myself. I was at PNSY in 1984-1985 as ships company during the USS LEXINGTON's overhaul and, at that time, I have to say I agree with Daley's comments 100%. But wait; I returned to the shipyard in 1992 as civilian Port Engineer in USS FORRESTAL and transferred over to the USS JOHN F KENNEDY in the same job after we decommissioned the FORRESTAL; I couln't believe I was in the same shipyard!!! The yard already had the word they would be closing of course but that didn't stop the workers from turning in an outstanding job on both ships; the professionalism and dedication I saw, particularly in finishing up the JFK was unbelievable; to this day, I tell people that the Navy closed their two best shipyards when they shutdown Philadelphia and Charleston and it proves that BRAC IS nothing but pure politics. I won't take back a word of what I said about the yard in the early 80's but can't say enough good about how it ended up.

Good Morning Julio!

My name is Gary Van Hoose and I work for a small business company needing some help regarding history around the Philly area shipyards. My friend Commander Bill Nichols, suggested I touch base with the Yardbirds as they are the backbone for what was achieved there. We are looking for someone who would be historically knowledgeable (ok, meaning just knows what went on ha) about the NSWC Carderock Division; Ship Systems Engineering Station (NSWCCD-SSES), Philadelphia facility. We will be gathering information to put together a celebration, reunion and museum celebrating the history/achievements of that group and would like to have someone who served there act as a consultant for us. We want to focus on the important achievements in all areas, but the people make the difference in any organization (reading your blogs was very insightful and heartwarming) and we wanted to find some help directly from members of the SSES team. Besides finding someone for consulting directly with us, our future goals would also include getting quotes from as many surviving members of that team as we could to include in the commemorative materials. Thank you in advance for your help and guidance towards anyone you think would be interested, putting up a post or other thoughts/ideas in any way would be appreciated.

The last 14 years here could not compare to the first 22 years spent at the YARD. I always loved the YARD my job there and most of the people I worked with. We did good work in those old days. There is no where on earth a tradesman could get the education and experience we got at the YARD. I will always be grateful for the opportunity I had to work there.

To whom it may concern:

I am trying to locate information on a fellow POW from World War II. We were in the 8th Air Corp and members of the same bomber crew. On 07/21/1944, in a Munich raid, our plane was damaged by flak and we had to bail our. We were captured and sent to Stalag Luft IV. We were prisoners together there until 02/06/1945.

I have recently tried to locate Mr. Eramo and discovered that he has since passed away. I have received information from the National Personnel Records Center and within this paperwork is information indicating that Leonard Arthur Eramo worked at the Philadelphia navel ship yard possibly starting in 1965, through February of 1981.He indicates in a letter to the National Personnel Records Center that. "He will be retiring in three (3) months."

Other information:

Residence at the time of his letter and employment was:

358 Walden Lane
Williamstown, NJ 08094

Date of Birth:

July 13, 1924

Date of Death:

November 13, 1984

My uncle was a part of 41 shop, many ex Navy Yard men attending his benefit last year. Please post. Thank you.

Good morning, Friends ~

Last year, so many of you did so much for my uncle, Joseph Rucci. You made baskets for his benefit, you prayed for him and our family, you attended the benefit and most of all, you offered your friendship and support.

Please, please, please pray for our family at this time.

Last night, a fire broke out at my uncle's house in Deptford, NJ. Because he is almost a quadriplegic from MRSA, he was severely burned. My uncle passed away at around 2 a.m. last night. Action News covered the story.

I ask each of you to pray for my aunt Denise Rucci, my cousin Chris Buccino and his girlfriend, Ashely - who were home with him and did so much to get him out, my cousin Jamie Buccino and her fiance, Joe Grasso, who also tried to save our Joey, and of course, my mother, Michele, and her siblings, Donna, Michael, David and Paul. This is such a tragedy that has left us all with broken hearts. The trauma my family will bear, especially Chris, Ashley, and Joe, I cannot even begin to imagine. We need your prayers more than ever.

We try and make sense of things in this world, but we never find answers. This one, I just cannot even touch. I am filled with so much heartache and anger at this time. My uncle did not want to live the way he was, both physically and mentally, but to have to die in such pain, which he has already endured, I just cannot understand this at all. Two weeks ago his femur was broke and he just got out of the hospital. I am just in a state of shock.

You have all been so wonderful to our family - so on behalf of everyone, I want to thank you. I wanted you all to find out from us because you have been so good to us. Please pray for us.

Thank you.

Jennifer McShane

Mr. Daley emailed me almost immediatly. He told me he left the 'yard in 1983 after spending 7 years on the waterfront because he saw it coming that the 'yard was going to close. Why the hell didn't he put his two cents in like the rest of us did so we might have the chance albeit slim of staying open. NOPE !!! He chose to bail out. Jack Balkir says he doesn't know him, and I find that to be true, as Jack knows just about everyone that ever worked on the waterfront including yours truly. Mr. Daley must have worked the back shifts, where we know a lot of 'stiffs' went there to hide, and turn in false reports in the night letters that the routed work wasn't done for some reason or another. Guess he was one of these.....

Who is this stiff Daley ?? I'll bet he was hiding in 1000 building behind a desk, and never went out on the boats. We had a lot of stiffs like him around, and be that as it may as most of you said we got the jobs done. Maybe if he didn't like working there he should have resigned, and it does bother me that after 14 years he has to bad mouth all of us that gave our all in loyalty to our crafts, and to our country. Most of you recall the tale of what CAPT Bergner told at the closing ceremonies about the Philly Work Ethic. he was driving around the 'yard on the last day of work back in 1995, and came upon a group working on Pier 6. He approached the X-72 F/L and asked what's up, and did they know the word was passed to secure at 1300. The Rigger Boss spoke up, and said yep Cap'n we got the word, but me and my men figger to give you 8 hours work for 8 hours pay !! He shook his head, thanked the Boss, and drove away. He told at the ceremont that they stayed over till 1900 to tie up a barge then clocked out, and went home. In closing Mr. Daley, what did you do on the last day ??? I'll bet you didn't even show up !!! We all saw the handwriting on the wall in 1991, but we still kept working, and turned out a good quality product till the bitter end-we worked with the cards that were dealt us. You know I long to hear the whistle blow again.............. All these people were my friends, and my family and I sorely miss all of you. Good luck, and Good Fortune...... Hope to see 'yall at the Reunion....

In typical PNSY fashion, everyone has rallied together ... this time against someone who spoke without knowledge or thought. I spent 30 years in the PR/public affairs field, just over 6 of them as the civilian PAO for PNSY and, like so many of you have already said, it was the best job I ever had. It wasn't the easiest, but as someone else here said, if it were easy they wouldn't have needed me ... or any of us. The one thing that was easy about it was talking favorably and positively to the media and the public about the work we did and the people who did it. I'm proud, and thankful, to have been a part of it and to have been able to call some of you "friend."

You get him Trish, thanks to Mr. Daley for giving us the opportunity to once again rally for good old PNSY, it shows we yardbirds still stick together. I am working for a municipality and the 90%, 10% rule still rears it's ugly head, 90% of the workeres do most of the work & are outstanding people, then there are the 10% ( of which Mr. Daley was more than likely one) who coast along never pulling their weight & b---h about everything, I think we called them drones.
Hold your heads high fellow yardbirds we have nothing to be ashamed of, hope to see you at the reunion.

This is in response to Mr. Daley's comments. The 'yard closed due to political pressure. In fact, we had the most economical manhour rate when compared to the other shipards. The people who worked at the shipyard had integrity and a work ethic. Havng been employed in both the private and public sectors, the shipyard, by far, was the best place I have ever worked. I will always treasure the friendships I made there and the experience of working with different people and in various departments. Shame on you Mr. Daley. I hope that wherever you are, you have found a place to work that makes you happy.

Thank God for people like R. Daley. He has inspired me and others to respond in a positive way about our days at the yard. Sure there were times when we had down time or tried to sneak in a pinocole game or sneak for a good South Philly Lunch. But all in all when we were asked to step up to plate and deliver a ship on time, we answered the call. Just ask some of those boses in Norfolk, when we were there on TDY. We worked faster and harder than many of our brothers in the Virgina shipyard. And that's not a knock against them, it's just the way it was. And politics is why they stayed open. But I am grateful for the 15 yrs at the shipyard and not a day goes by when I don't share about my experience at the Shipyard with patients or families or co-workers, as I work now as an RN at Children's Hospital. Once again, that opportunity given to me by God as He closed one door he opened another. PNSY will always be a proud part of my life. Thanks for the memories!!

Thanks, Mr. Daley. You've brought out PNSY pride in a big way...it's great to see. I don't know you, how long you worked at PNSY, or what kind of worker you may have been. I can tell you that I spent 15 great years at PNSY. But, the yard and the people with whom I worked made me able to move on. Since then, the Marines have been real good to me. But, they only got the opportunity to do so because of all the great people that I learned from...Kell, TE, Griff, Q, Armundo, Linc, Lee, Bob M, Rudy, Hutch, Curley, Frank McC, TCarr, Berry, Richie D, Eddie, BiilyC, my brother Den for leading me to PNSY, and way too many more to name. There's not a day goes by when I don't think about those times. Thanks, again, Mr. Daley. Cheer up. Oh, and to all the aforementioned riff-raff, I'm the best lagger that ever lived.

In response to Mr.Daley's comments regarding why our shipyard closed:

It is amazing how some people think that because they have an opinion, they have to share it with the world even though they weren’t asked to in the first place. And then to share that (negative) opinion on a web site that was set up to honor the memories and the men and woman who worked at that very special place doesn’t seem too smart to me. Must be why he worked in 51 shop rather then 11 shop <SMILE>.
We certainly had our share of problems (Mr. ‘D’ may have been 1 of them), all companies do, but that is what made PNSY special. The way we came together (most of the time) to solve those problems made PNSY a good place to work and learn. I heard, and I think it was Capt. Jon Bergner say,” If it were easy, there’d be a shipyard on every corner.” The things I saw the people at PNSY accomplish in my career I’ll never forget. The people I have met, worked with and even disagreed with, I’ll never forget. We, the 95% of the workforce, who cared, will never forget. It was a pleasure working with you. You other 5%, have gone through life picking out the negatives of every thing and every one you meet and deal with. You will be lonely people in your old age. But with the good comes the bad, to all (100%) of the Yard Birds, Thanks for the memories.

This is response to Robert Daley's comments. Instead of complaining and critizing everything, did he ever try and make suggestions to change things to make them better? Maybe he should've done a little work instead of finding fault. No job is a utopia but she (PNSY) was awfully good to alot of people, including me. Has he ever been to a private shipyard, I doubt it. I have many times and they have many of the same problems that PNSY had. Additionally, some of the things that hurt PNSY is it wasn't nuclear and the trend was all carriers would be nuc, they weren't allotted or allowed to do any new construction, the fleet was shrinking and finally the navy was getting rid of all the steam powered ships. Our forte bread and butter. Just look on the internet and you can see almost all the ships we overhauled are gone (scrapped, sunk, sold etc). So Mr. Daley do your homework before you run your mouth.

I’ve worked in the private sector for 15 years now and I’ve worked for organizations that are managed much worst that the management at PNSY. I think back more so to stopping at the bar before and after games we won or lost and having more than a few beers and always remebering Mike never really getting too upset about a loss, he'd just say " oh well what the hell are you going to do about it, we'll play them again. In case you haven't been there yet, there is a PNSY Reunion website at www.pnsyreunion.com. I attended one of the first reunions on the Battleship New Jersey and had a great time and got reacquainted with some old (older???) friends. I was not able to make the second one.

I recently posted a suggestion on that site that while planned reunions at a hall with ticket selling in advance are nice, they are a lot of work and can be expensive for some folks on a tight budget like our retired brethren (he said respectfully).

Anyway, I'm floating the idea out there for smaller reunions at already existing venues and spreading the word through your networks and by word of mouth. For example. Benny the Bums at Holiday Inn at 10th & Packer in South Philly has the Saturday Night Dance Party with Bob Pantano from 7pm to 2pm. From 9:00 on, there's a $10 cover charge, but if you get there before 9:00 or, have dinner at the restaurant, the cover charge is waived.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes if they want to put a Reunion together at a hall with open bar however, I think that a Reunion Committee might find it worthwhile to pick a night for a Reunion and tell people to meet there at 7:00 and only pay for what they drink or, interested people can meet there at 5:30 for dinner and order off the dinner menu and then they are on a cash bar basis. Just a suggestion. This could turn into an annual event like say, the Saturday before Thanksgiving every year? BTW, I am not volunteering to be the Reunion Committee. I'm still working. This sounds like a job for a retired Yardbird. Hope all my Yardbird friends are doing well.

Just my thoughts...

Hi Julio,

I was looking up info about the Philly Naval Shipyard, & I saw the ex-Yardbird home page, with an image of PNSY's jacket patch, featuring the 350-ton hammerhead crane which graced the Philadelphia sky-line for so many years. I was a sailor stationed aboard the USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7), when she was stationed at the Philly Naval Station, on
pier 2, if I remember it correctly (1985-89). We had a fine view of the crane from the Perry.

I'm interested to know if I could purchase 1 or 2 of these PNSY jacket patches. I've tried to locate one on eBay, but had no luck! Could you help me please?

My name is Jim West and I am looking for a black gentleman, by the name of Vernon Stokes, that I was in the Army Paratroopers with in Mainz/ Gonsenheim Germany during 1965-66! He was from Philly and later worked in the Philly Naval Yard there. I don't know what he did but a friend of mine ran into him, there in the Naval Yard, some time after he left the service. If you have any suggestions as to how I may contact him, I would appreciate that! If you have a monthly e-mailing and would put this info in it, that might help jog some ones memory! My dad was stationed there in the mid to late 70's. I loved growing up on the base there! My Mom would sometimes give my brother and I money to ride the ferry across to get out of her hair, I suppose! I am sad to see that it has closed.

Sadly, I was assistant project manager to the conversion of the Yard to civilian usage. All those deserted ships, facilities that would never again hear the sound of the birth of a great vessel. The last vessel repair I worked on was the Constellation, another dying ship. The yard still houses some Naval facilities, but by and large is just one more of Philadelphia's now deserted waterfront.

I also have a brochure honoring the workers at Cramp's during WWII, and original blueprints of sub construction.

Living in Gloucester City NJ, a town built on the workers at PSNY, NY Ship, Sun Ship and all the other great shipbuilding traditions that began with the founding of the colonies, I am proud of my connection with PSNY and honor all those who were part of this great heritage of Philadephia.

Good luck to all of you.

I just received a call from Mike Conway (shop 67F). Ted Kennedy from shop 67F in the shipyard passed away over the weekend. Ted had been living in Kentucky with his wife. He was 51. He will be cremated at some point soon and his ashes will be transported to Maine to be placed on his father's property. Mike Conway is going to try to make arrangements to have Ted's wife stop at his house on her way north with Ted's ashes. Anyone wishing to pay their last respects at that time will be welcome. Mike will provide further information. If you would like to send a sympathy card to his wife, send it to:

Subject: Joey Rucci - 41 Shop - Boilermaker - Needs Your Support!

To Whom It May Concern ~ I was wondering if you could post my story on your website. See below. Thank you.

Hello. My name is Jennifer McShane (nee Holland). My father, George W. Holland, and my uncle, Joey Rucci, worked for the Philadelphia Navy Yard for quite some time. They were boilermakers in the 41 shop. My father, George, also known as "Cowboy" passed away January 10, 2004 suddenly of a heart attack. He was only 62 years old.

All my life, my mother's brothers, Joey, Michael, Paul, and David Rucci, have always been father figures to me. At my wedding, on June 2, 2007, I dance with all of them in memory of my dear father. Because of my uncles, I felt the presence of my father on that special day.

Right after my wedding, my uncle Joey became very ill. He started to get flu symptoms one Thursday. He was also having back pains and thought he may have pulled his back out while playing with his grandson, Christopher. By that Sunday, my Uncle Joey's wife, Denise, found him collapsed on the floor. As she states, "Our whole lives changed in a matter of two days." The news that our family would soon receive changed all of our lives forever.

Joey had MRSA - Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (pronounced "mursa"). MRSA is a resistant variation of the common bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, which is the most common cause of staph infections. Staphylococcus aureus can cause a range of illnesses from minor skin infections, such as pimples, impetigo, boils, celluli tis folliculitis, scalded skin syndrome and abscesses, to life-threatening diseases, such as pneumonia, meningitis, Toxic shock syndrome (TSS), and septicemia.

MRSA got into Joey’s bloodstream and his vertebrae. It is not known exactly how it got there, but it did. He did have a simple cut on his ankle which was treated with an antibiotic. For weeks, Joey was in a coma. He had a trach put in, as well as a pace maker. He was at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and then Magee Rehabilitation (part of the Jefferson Health System), both located in Philadelphia. Joey has recently come home, but is completely paralyzed from the chest down. He only has use of his right hand.

When we tell people about MRSA, they look confused. Many have never heard of this serious disease. They do not know that it is an antibiotic resistant bacteria. They are unaware that it can be spread through skin to skin contact. They are uninformed that it can look like a simple spider bite. MRSA can be found everywhere and it can be deadly.

In addition to helping our Joey, we want to warn people everywhere about taking precautions to prevent this happening to them and their loved ones. Our goal is to spread the word and not germs.

As many of you who worked with him would know, Joey has always been that "fix it" type of guy. He is the one who our family calls when something is broken, whether it is an electrical problem in the house, a car making a funny sound, or a broken door bell. When something needs repair, everyone shares the same thought, "our Joey can fix it."

Our family and friends are now pulling together for Joey. For the first time, we want to fix something for him! Joey can no longer walk. He can no longer work. He can no longer fix things. However, I mentioned how wonderful he is and it is this amazing will for life which keeps him alive. Amazingly, he still has his spirit and sense of humor. He has my beautiful aunt Denise, his wife and rock, who is so strong and supportive of him each and everyday. My aunt Denise is a frank human being, one whose opinion is always guaranteed to be an honest one. She cares for her husband, telling him along the way, "You didn't die, and there's a reason for that. It is what it is and we have to accept it!"

Denise has been out of work and has just recently returned. Many people at her work donated their own personal time so that she could care for Joey. But now, it is time to try and get back to a "normal" way of life. She needs to work everyday, especially for Joey's health benefits. Joey must learn to become independent. Their home must be transformed into a handicap accessible environment and we want to make this possible for them. In addition, we just learned that he will not be getting Long Term Disability. We are learning that the saying, "It's always something" is quite true.

Also, Joey has not been able to leave the house, as we are trying to find a handicap accessible van to lift his 1,000 lb+ wheelchair. The more successful we are in helping to Fix It For Rooch (the slogan of our benefit), the more we can give hope to Joey's future.

All of you can help us in many ways. You can spread the word - forward emails, talk about our benefit, etc. You can do some homework and find some places to donate goods and services for Joey's benefit that we are in the process of planning. We are doing a Philadelphia theme. Tony Luke Jr.- a beautiful man - is donating roast pork sandwiches, with broccoli rabe, sharp provolone and all the fixings. You cannot get more PHILLY than that! We have also contacted Tastykake, The Philadelphia Pretzel Factory, and more! We are looking for additional ideas, food donations, items to be auct ioned off, and any other contribution that will help make this benefit a success. Any role you can play to help make this a profitable fundraiser will be greatly appreciated!

The benefit is on Friday, April 25th, at the EOM Club in South Philadelphia. The time is 8 - 12. Joey will be attending the benefit. He needs this for his spririts more than anything. We hope all his Navy Yard friends will be there to surprise him and give him a good smile.

So far, we have heard from Wallsy, Bill Drew, Ray Freda, and Eddie Jones. Thank you guys for spreading the word!

Be sure to visit Joey at his CarePage online. Denise checks it many times a day, and says how this has become their lifeline to the outside world. She says the CarePage makes him smile more than anything. So please, leave Joey a message. This is helping Fix It For Rooch more than you know!
