Hi I worked at the shipyard for 35 years. I just found this site. I worked in
supply for 20 years and my last 17 years were in IRO you now call it Human
Resources. If some of you older guys look at the bottom of your form 50's you
will see that I signed off on them. Is the title "Yardbird" reserved for shop
workers only or are we "white collar " workers included. Those of us that worked
in Supply ordered and expedited the shipment of all of the materials that you
used in building those ships. It doesn't seem like I've been retired for 27
years but I wish I had known about the reunions or were they all for the guys in
the shops. Enquiring minds want to know.
I would like to hear from any of you that remember me, Betty Tinnin.
Btinnin@aol.com Mention Yardbird so that I
will know it's not SPAM.

Subject: PNSY ???
Dear Julio:
My name is Edward C. Zimmerman, Jr. and I am the Founder & President of the USS
UNITED STATES Foundation, representing the first ship and frigate USS UNITED
STATES, Commodore John Barry's flagship in the United States Navy.
Since it's beginnings on 03 September 1978 I have represented this gallant
frigate, I am quite aware of Humphrey's Wharf, and am a native born
Philadelphian.
Maybe you, or someone you may know, may share with me some insight as to why it
is that I have not received any communications with anyone from the yard over
the past almost 30 years, or at least after the Navy withdrew.
I am, and have been, interested in the status of Dry Dock #1. It has been my
hopes of building a full-scale seaworthy replica of the frigate UNITED STATES
for many years. I already have the approval of Fort Mifflin on the Delaware to
build a pier 100x300 feet to replace the abandoned RR pier outside their Sally
Port. Mr Lee Anderson, Executive Director, and I have had many discussions about
Project Old Waggon and the Fort Mifflin people have been very intrigued to say
the least.
Maybe you could give me some sort of reliable contact within the yard that will
respond. As a Philadelphian I am not use to being treated without respect from
anyone in Philadelphia. This "cold shoulder" treatment is new to me and I feel
it is rampant throughout the country since about the 1980's.
I send to you and your organization my sincere respects and have the honor to be
at your service. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Happy Holidays,
I just found your web site and wish to thank you.
I was one of the navy sailors who was there for several of the final years, and
was very lucky to have worked with several Tiger teams sent from the PNSY on
multiple ships before I came to Phily.
I also was a crewmember of CV-59/AVT-59 when we came into PNSY in 1992, but
shortly after that was a member of the Naval Station, and also shipped back out
on the JFK CV-67, but then returned to NavSta Phily & PNSY to be a close down
team member.
I was one lucky person to be able to serve and work with many of the PNSY
yardbirds, and I wish to say Thank you for everything, you all have ever done
for the US NAVY.
Stay Safe,
Peter

Subject: Question about the Philly Navy Yard
Hi,
I'm on Cape Cod. I am seeking the location of a statue that I was told may be at
the Navy Yard. It is a white marble or granite statue of a sailor in uniform
(the white one, I think) carrying a bag of some sort (duffle?). I understand it
is in memory of "the sailors who have gone to Davy Jones' Locker", or in memory
of the USS Indianapolis.
Can you give me any info on this, if it indeed exists (or did exist) at the Navy
Yard?
Thank you.

Last Saturday, August 25, 2007; we have launched another successful reunion
event at Cannstatter of Northeast Philadelphia. The guest registry had 110
guests but the final attendance number was 102.
The food, the drinks and the music were plentiful; and everybody had a great
time. In addition, Cannstatter management was very happy to serve us and they
offered me an opening for 2008 Reunion.
I am extremely pleased that everyone had a great time, and I hope to see bigger
crowd next year. Said that, stay healthy, stay well and stay tuned.
Special thanks to my reunion staff and Julio (PNSY Website) helping to make the
2007 Reunion success.

Once again, Jack did an outstanding job! Too bad there were less attendees
than last year. We Supply folks would like to get an impromptu gathering
together in the not-so-distant future. This was something we were exploring
after the last reunion. We’re considering going some place like Chickie’s &
Pete’s in South Philly. Nothing formal, just set a date and time to meet. Every
one would be on their own for food and drinks, or depending on the response,
we’d look into a party package. If anyone would be interested in joining us
(even those of you who didn’t work in Supply are welcome to join us!), e-mail me
at Mary.Lynskey@dcma.mil.

First, I would like to express my sincere thanks to individuals assisting me in
making the reunion event successful and memorable. It was extremely gratifying
to see countless smiling faces and hearing hundres of laughters.
Second, we are already started to pre-plan 2007 PNSY Reunion and we are strongly
contemplating to enhance the event with dinner, music and dancing combination.
I have an e-mail database with your name in it, if you have responded to 2006
Reunion, if not drop me a line now so I can put your name into my mailing list.
I am hoping to establish permenantly dedicated reunion website shortly, Julio
and I will be linked and working together to broadcast the event. However, your
support will be the most critical element to elevate the level of interest and
broadcasting of the news. Therefore, everyone should frequently browse these
websites to find out exactly what is developing.
Stay tuned, 2007 is not too far! Pass the word!

Hello Everyone,
Let me be one of the first to say what a great time it was on Saturday
night at the PNSY Reunion on the Battlship New Jersey. Congratulations to Jack
Balkir and his staff on putting it together. I hope that thos who attended will
spread the word for next year.
In conjunction with the reunion, I am co-writing an article for a local
magazine (Philadelhia Row Home)with Andrea DePalma. While Andrea will be
focusing on the history of the Yard and the Reunion event, I would like to focus
on "Life after the Shipyard."
I'm looking to interview and write about someone who has made the most
drastic career change since leaving the Shipyard. If this is You or you know of
someone who fits this description, please email at

The reunion was awesome! Kudos to Jack Balkir and the planning committee for
putting together a memorable event. Jack mentioned plans are in the works to
make this an annual event. Let's hope so! It was great seeing so many of my
old friends and co-workers and renewing those friendships. Thanks a bunch to
Julio for keeping this site going. Without it, many of us might not have been
able to reconnect with one another. Looking forward to seeing more folks at
future events.

I would like my father's name to be apart of this memorial. My dad worked at
the shipyard after he left the Navy. The years he worked there, I'm not sure
of. I would like him to be rememembered. He was very proud to work on the Kitty
Hawk. I remember going the the christening of the boat. I guess those where the
years he worked there. My dad died suddenly greater than 17 years ago, I have no
living relatives which could help me with the years. I was very young when he
worked there. Keep their memories alive. In memory of my father: Albert E.
Ponto he lived both in Philadelphia and Collingswood, New Jersey...Thank you.
My older brother Thomas worked on the ship also.

I fondly remember the days when we rebuilt the USS BELKNAP, CG-26. I was working
the transmitter room with Dick (Dickie de-Wolf) Zanol, Craig Stratton and
electricians Georg Loftus, Charlie White and a guy we all referred to as "Little
Ole Bill". Can't remember Bill's name ! Anyway, that was the days of
cleanliness. I believe Bill Angst (11 shop eagle??) was the cleanliness Czar.
His job was to make sure there was no food, no drink, no debris, no nothing on
the ship. Also working on the ship was (help me out here yardbirds)a guy I only
knew as "56 Shop Sully, The Peanut Man". Sully wore a big overcoat, and when he
opened it up, it was full of 1lb bags of peanuts. I think he sold them twice a
week. We always bought a bag off of him and would lock the transmitter room door
until the peanuts were gone. One day after we had bought our peanuts there was a
knock of the door, so we hid the bag and opened the door. Standing there was
Bill Angst followed by my Foreman, Bert Dunbar. Agnst looked around, found the
bag and said to Dunbar, "67, whats this?" "Looks like peanuts!" said Dunbar.
"Get rid of them" said Angst. So Dunbar gives some peanuts to everybody in the
room ! I wish I had a picture of Agnst's face. That didn't stop us from buying
peanuts though. We just found a better hiding place !!

Looking forward to the upcoming reunion. Jack Balkir has done an awesome job
organizing it. Thank you Jack and thank you the volunteers helping him out.
It's going to be a fine event. I'm hoping cameras are allowed so I can capture
the event and share the pictures with other YardBirds who can't attend.
I previously stopped posting newspaper articles about the Navy Yard because of
copyright infringement concerns, but I added a link to an article from the
Philadelphia Inquirer dated September 28, 1996, the day after the Yard's
closure. You can access it by clicking on the 'Last Station Log' link in the
opening page.
There is a line from this article that evokes an emotional sense of pride in me
whenever I read it.
"For completing its last project ahead of schedule -- where other closing
shipyards had their last projects towed away to be finished elsewhere -- the
shipyard received the meritorious unit commendation and Bergner received the
presidential Legion of Merit award."
That about sums up what we were all about.

Saturday, September 20, 2003 NAME: Roberta Womer SHOP: 07 My father was employed at the PNSY from 1941 to 1977. He retired as the Public Works Superintendant in 1977. My Dad's name is Robert Womer and he is 85 years old. He has always taken great pride in his years that he worked at the yard. He had an extremely successful career at the yard and made his family very proud. My reason for writing may be a little strange and I'm not sure if there is anyone out there that may be able to help me. During my father's career at some point he was given a small gold eagle lapel pin. I'm not sure if it was real gold (that does not matter) and I have no idea why or when it was given to him. My dad always wore this pin whenever he put a suit on. It had a lot of sentimental value to him. Several years ago his home was broken into and the eagle lapel pin was stolen. To this day it is the only thing that he mentions that he regrets losing due to the robbery. If there is anyone out there that can give me any idea of how I may find one to be able to give to my Dad for Christmas this year I would greatly appreciate it. I know this would make my Dad very happy and it is one thing I would really love to be able to give to him in his later years of life. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Roberta Thursday, September 25, 2003 NAME: Tony Santini SHOP: IRO To: Roberta Womer The gold wings that you are referencing were given to Naval civilian employees who reached the position of Superintendent. I contacted a few Shipyard buddies (Pat D'Amico, Marge Johnston, Frank McClafferty) and found out that the Shipyard didn't give them out. They were presented to the new Superintendents by the National Association of Superintendents of US Naval Shore Establishments. I have been unable to find an address or phone number for the Association but will keep trying. I'm sure that when they hear your story, you can get that pin replaced by Christmas. Tuesday, January 06, 2004 Name: Roberta Womer Low Shop: 07 I wanted to post a note in the memory of my Dad. In the fall I posted a note regarding my Dad, Robert C. Womer. I needed help replacing a gold eagle pin from the National Assoc of Superintendents. My Dad was the Superintendent of Public Works at PNSY and retired in 1977. The response I received regarding my request was overwhelming, I never expected to hear from so many great people. The reason for replacing the pin was because my Dad's home was broken into and the pin stolen. My original goal was to give the pin as a Christmas gift, well my Dad was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung and bone cancer in November. He was deteriorating rapidly and I gave him his NAS pin for Thanksgiving. He was so happy and could not believe I was able to get another pin. We printed out all of the email responses from all of the kind people that helped, he read them all and was amazed. On December 28, 2003 my Dad passed away at home with us by his bedside. He was able to pass with dignity in his own home of almost 40 years. He was buried with his gold eagle NAS pin on his lapel. Thank you to all who helped me and to all who responded, your kindness will never be forgotten. Thanks for helping make my Dad very happy. Sincerely, Roberta Womer Low |
