I was told from Wayne Morton, shop 11 shipfitter that John Zebley past away last night. He will truely be missed by all. He had a tough battle with cancer and finally ran out of energy. He was a good man and a good husband and father. Please pray for him and his family.

Hey Renee,
Just a "term of endearment" about your new "rocket scientist" days. Hope I have not offended...and now that you mention it, it could very well be a reference to your old "rocket scientist" days...no really, just my way of expressing pride for the accolades of an old friend.
Congrats again on your degree!!

Hello Folks.
I am very very very sad to say that our good friend Jacqueline (Jackie Clark) Stanislow died peacefully at home today, June 23rd, at 1:25pm. For more than two years she fought such a brave and strong battle against cancer. God knows, her spirit and outlook were an inspiration to many.
The family will hold calling on Thursday evening and Friday of next week at the William H. Logan Funeral Home in Yeadon, PA. That is the 28th and 29th. Details will be listed in the Delaware County Daily times and I will be able to post more about the mass and cemetery in a day or two.
I met Jackie on October 4th, 1982. Our first day as 31 shop apprentices. We spent our apprenticeship together and developed a friendship that grew right up to the base closure. No matter what, she was always there to offer a supportive and/or kind word. I always admired her knowledge and advice. She had a great sense of humor and in my opinion was among the few people in the shop that conducted herself with a constant and immeasurable dignity. She was truly a wonderful person and a dear friend to many, and we thank God that we had the time that we were able to spend
with her.
Jackie, I love you and will miss you dearly. It was an Honor to know you.

First I would like to thank Rick Rinderer for coordinating the exceptional 031 shop reunion. Fantastic Job, the turn out was awesome!!! So many old friends, so little time to mingle. Flying back to Philly from TDY and passing over the hammerhead crane bring back memories of the Yard. I would remember the good times and good people and try to forget the bad times and A-holes. One of my favorite memories is of the 031 shop Broom Hockey league. How inventive! To have something like that develop in such a dreary place says a lot for the 031 shop people. I also want people to know that Antczak has shamed me into returning his email. My very best wishes to ALL the ex-yardbirds.
P.S. Regardless of what anyone says the Million Dollar Glide does NOT have Platinum and Gold pistons.

I just viewed all of C. Willie's pics from the 31 shop reunion (...and stole a few). I'm glad the turnout was good for you Rick. Sorry I couldn't make
it, my son Tim ended up in an ice hockey tourney that Sunday and I just couldn't disappoint him.
But it was great to see some of my old pals, even if it was only on film. A special hello to Ray "Rod", Renee the "Spacegirl", Jimmy Keenan, Dan Maguire (...my favorite supervisor, probably the only one I know who deserved the position), Jack Elliot, Oh and Barrie Griffies you #@$% (...thanks for returning my email)....and to all the rest who visit this site from the "precision" shop!!
I think it'd be a great idea to have one every year, I'm bound to be able to make at least one of 'em...(sorry Rick). One suggestion though, make it on a Friday or Saturday. If any of you are ever up the Pocono's, give me a buzz and drop by to say hi (570)472-9279, just make sure you have your permission slip signed (he,he).

Julio, you have done a wonderful job with this website KUDO's, I spent 16 years at the shipyard and when I left in October of '94 to work for the Postal
Service(5 and 1/2 years of pure HELL) I was fortunate to land with U.S.Mint last June,it's a great place to work plenty of EX-YARDBIRDS to talk about those GOOD TIMES,but there isn't a time when I ride by on 95 or take the kids in to see the old ship's that I think back to all the guys I worked with and wondering how they are all doing. I sure miss going to the PHILADIUM on fridays BEFORE and after our softball games in 56 shop we had some great teams in the late 80's (several champonships) boy that seems so long ago.I have read many articles on the Site I just felt It was time I sent a few thoughts of my own.I do hope everyone throughout the yard both PAST and PRESENTLY (you public works guys) are all in GOOD HEALTh! I certainly do miss that place! Ray H.

I have sad news to share. Bob Lendzinski (fondly known as Jimmy Carter to some) long time instructor for 31 shop has passed away of a stroke. Proceedings are scheduled for Friday and Saturday June 8th and 9th.
The newspaper information is as follows:
Friends and Relatives may call Friday night from 7-9pm and on Saturday at 8am at the Joseph T. Sekula Funeral Home on 2634 East Allegheny.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10am at the Ascension of our Lord Church at West Mooreland and F Street, interment following at Sunset Memorial Park. The family published that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Robert J. Lendzinski, to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 282, c/o Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church at Kensington Ave and Monmouth Street, Philadelphia, PA 19134.
Everyone that has ever had anything to do with Bob would have to agree - hands down - Bob was a fantastic person not to mention an awesome (and quite patient:) apprentice instructor. He was truly and all around nice and caring guy and will be forever remembered by anyone and everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with him. So, Hats off to Bob from the class of 1986!!!! We'll certainly miss your wonderful and sincere smile.

I hope you can help. Will visiting New Jersey recently, I passed the PNSY on I-95 coming from the airport and noticed a ship at the mooring which resembled a WWII battleship and at first thought it was the New Jersey, However, I also saw # 134 painted on her hull. I know of no battleships with that designation and she seemed much too large to be a destroyer or even an old cruiser, granted that I only got to see her for a moment. I am trying to find out what ship this is, (name, type, ect.) I have always been fascinated with navy ships and would appreciate any help I could get with this matter. I've spent several hours now seaching the web trying to track this ship down to no avail. Thanks

Hey! Great idea, Julio! Or maybe name tags with shops/codes on them? I think that I only recognized about a half a dozen people at the Lagoon, and no
one could seem to tell me where you were to thank in person for this great web page.
Of the people I did see - Ted Kennedy (81) and Mr. Detroia(72) never seem to age one bit, in fact, they look younger. I'd like to know that secret. Joe Mabee (11) and his beautiful wife Jenny are wonderfully happy and he has a great new career in CAD technology! Gary (56), Dave(NAVSHIPSO now) and Joe Dienna (NAVSHIPSO then) were as nice as ever and doing fine. Jim Merkins (06) and Rick Rinderer (31) were out of control- as usual- dancing all over the place and drinking their faces off.....
I love those guys!
I really wish that I would have seen Pete the Cop. I didn't know he was there and I have heard so many great things about him since the closure. AND I was really hoping to see more shop friends. I felt kinda bad in a way. Not recognizing some of the folks. Trish Peck (Beacon), you look fantastic! I apologize that I didn't know that was you! Best wishes to you and your family.
As for everyone else...Perhaps some that I THOUGHT I recognized might not have recognized me (at my new, post baby 'adjusted' size :) .... OR....maybe they just didn't want to! At any rate, FOR the record - I've DEFINITELY been snubbed by greater people than Walt Youngheim! Walt what happened? You don't say hi to ex shipso any more? I know you didn't learn that from my friend Mike. Sheesh:)

I went to the second annual YardBird reunion at the Lagoon and talked to Mike McCullough, John Stangler, and Pete the Cop. I took some pictures, they're in the 'Pictures and Graphics' section.
It was hard to tell how many YardBirds were there because of all the people. That place was crowded. Maybe next year we can all wear a Navy Yard t-shirt or hat so we can identify each other.
I got the idea to add an 'Upcoming Reunions' section to the main page. Anyone with info on upcoming reunions can e-mail me the details and I'll make sure it gets on there.

You can take the bird out of the yard, but you can't take the yard out of the bird! Hello to all my friends and former co-workers in the machine shop and
the rest of the yard as well. I sincerely hope you are all doing well. I spent 7 years at the shipyard commencing my machinist apprenticeship in 8/74, graduating in 8/78 and leaving for an equipment specialist position at the Defense Industrial Supply Center in 1981. I still remember my first day: long hair, flannel shirt, patched jeans, bad attitude and no concept of what was in store for me! I was written up and suspended more times than is humanly possible in my short tenure there for everything from being off the job without permission to not saluting the flag (true story). Contrary to Mr. D'Aprile's comments about "true" yardbirds, I hated the place and the supervision to the point that I started dreaming about it, however, I loved the friends I made some of whom I am close to even twenty years later. For all you 41 shop guys, my Dad was Victor Hidalgo, a 41 shop foreman whose signature saying was, "Nice day to be in the field!" (except with a spanish accent). Lamentably, he passed away from pancreatic cancer (occupational exposure to asbestos?) in 1991, but attributable to the fact that he took an early out in 1977, he was able to enjoy 14 years of retirement in his native Puerto Rico. I was a 17 year old apprentice who rode to work with my Dad and other 41 shop "luminaries" such as Charlie Deppie and Stanley Mellon. Anyway, I have a good "home job" story from 31 shop: There was a motorcycle, a 1971 Harley Electra Glide, which passed through several hands in 31 shop and which I ultimately purchased from another 31 shop alumnus, Barry Griffies, about 6 years ago. It is called the "Million Dollar Glide" because we conservatively estimate that at least a million dollars in govt. time/materials was invested in this cycle by all the various 31 shop owners through the years. The cycle is in great shape and runs like a top even after all this time. To Walt Andrews, Bob Kerr, Dick Murray, Larry Downey, Malio Ventresca, Joe O'Shea and any other 31 shop "inmate" I've left out, I hope you are all doing well.

Hey Yardbirds,
Julio, as usual you've outdone yourself with this website, good job! I stumbled upon it the other day and tried to read all of the mail to find out hats been going on since I left the Yard.
For those who don't know me, I started in Nov.'79 as a helper, went through apprenticeship, '80 to '83, journeyman 'till 88, and Welder Training Leader 'till I left in March '95. I went to South Jersey P&DC (Post Office) as a mechanic. I transferred to Daytona Beach FL Aug. '96 and have been here since, I am a Builbing Equipment Mechanic. There are 5 ex-Yard-Birds here, hard to believe huh?
Florida is great, my wife had been trying to get me here for ten years before the Yard closed,I couldn't just up and leave. The closing of PNSY was the chance she was waiting for and here I am. Built a house a block from the beach (Flagler Beach) and it seems like I'm on permanent acation,(working for P.O. is a vacation).
Daytona is home of NASCAR, I work .5 miles from the speedway, I wasn't a race fan up north, but it's hard not to be one here. Those cars are so loud, I can here them at work. Daytona is also home of Bikeweek and Biketoberfest, what a show they are, 500,000 motorcycles show up every year, talk about LOUD! What a party!!!!
Well enough of this, my finger hurts, I would like to here from some old friends.
RIP Carmen.
Big Mike

Okay, let's all get out there to this shipyard reunion.... we can't go around missing this every year! This will be the 'second annual reunion' so there
is still time to get in on the fun. Apparently, last year it rained and about 90 people attended. Not too bad! But, now this year we are going to need a larger crowd. You must know this: the weather should not be a concern for anyone with the Lagoon, because it is a club that parties both inside and out. So let's get there. Sounds like fun!!!! After all, We have no more softball games at the airfield, no more shop christmas parties, no more shop picnics, etc, etc. This is it! AND It's completely casual with no rocket science involved. We just show up, say "Shipyard Party", pay $10 at the door.... then eat and drink for free! Check your local papers for the announcement... it might be in there too.
Hey Ray.... If you scroll down the page you will see these reunion details. Here they are again. You know you can't get Rick to do anything around here, don't you agree Jim Merkins?

TO ALL FORMER NAVY YARD WORKERS
I understand there are some people posting lies about me on your website.
Here is EXACTLY what I said on the air.
"I worked at the yard sometime around 1973. (on the air I said '72, but I'm bad with years) The very first day I was told by the older guy they assigned
me to "to go hide." Apparently they had given him a job that he had knocked out quicker than they thought and HE was goofing off. He didn't want a
foreman to see me wandering about. I spent all day sitting in a stall reading. (In fact, I read all 37 million pages of THE LORD OF THE RINGS at
the yard)
This went on for the next 2 days. Now I have no idea what the reason was, but the fact is, the 10 months that I was at the yard, I worked maybe 2
of the 5 days a week there. The rest of the time was spent doing absolutely nothing.
Looking back, if I was a really conscientious worker, I would have went to a foreman and complained about it, but I didn't. I was a lousy worker and
I was also a little nervous about ratting out the various guys that I was assigned to as an apprentice."
There. That was what I said on the air. How the hell is that an insult to anyone who actually worked at the yard? Do you think I would insult my Dad
who worked there for 27 years. I was simply speaking the truth about the ten months I spent in 41 Shop.
In fact, the lack of work (and the fact that I can't hang a picture with a hammer and a nail) was the main reason I quit.
So please, enough already. Anyone who has ever listened to me on the air for even one morning knows I don't go in for "insult radio." In fact, about
ten years ago or so, someone called me about performing at a benefit for someone from the yard who was sick and had lost their job and I instantly
said yes. The benefit never came off, but not because of me.
As for the joker who claimed I wasn't even alive in '72 based on WIP's website, he really needs a reality check. The entire bio was an intentional
joke. Sounds to me like someone is raising a ruckus who has never even heard me on the air. Anyone who listens knows I'm 47 and a West grad of '71. So trust me. I was alive.
I hope this ends all this BS. If any of you yardbirds ever see me out and about, let me know you're there and I'll but you a drink.
Big Daddy Graham
