I changed my e-mail address to kelleyjohna@aol.com It has been five years since closure and many are ready for a reunion. I have heard from some and many are ready. The easiest way is to all meet at the Lagoon in Essington by the airport. In the spring they have Office Parties on their deck in the back.
Easy and inexpensive. We just need to get the word out. What do you think?

Hello fitters and welders. I`m living in Annapolis (nice boat shows) and working at Andrews A.F.B. Lots of yardbirds down here, they ought to call the D.C. area PNSY south. Worked up in Massachucetts for two years before they closed down that base too- that place was a country club, living on Cape Cod Bay was pretty sweet too, to bad I`m stuck down in crappy old Maryland. Hope to hear from you soon........Goesinya

Greetings to all,
Just thought I would pass this information on and hope that it helps someone and their family out. The U.S.Mint has 3 job openings for Utilities System Repairer Operators, WG-4742-10 the announcment # PMD-101-00 (RS) info number 215-408-0255. These positions have just been opened to all sources on 01/20/00 and close on 02/09/00. They are looking for multi-craft mechanics with the ability to rebuild pumps and diagnose motors. All HVAC and electrical experience would definitely benefit applicant.

I really enjoy reading the yardbird experiences and I thought it was humorous that someone wanted to censure it, perhaps they should read the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. Also my pick for the Yardbird of the Millenium would be Louey the Plunger, 07 Shop. I remember the time he brought back the whole sink so that he could change the faucet washers.

Have a great day. Dewey

P.S. Hey Boots Batersby I am glad to see you hangin in my old shop but I can't believe you didn't mention the Eagles once. Don't give up.

I'm a Yard brat, not a Yardbird, so I hope ya don't mind me posting. This is the only site I know where I can reminisce about my favorite base.
Even though I don't have any Yard experiences to share, my memories are because of you! I was on the Saratoga when she shipped families from Mayport to Phila. in 1980. Yes, 3 days of agony for me (before I knew about Dramamine!) but still adventurous for a little kid. (ooh aah! You mean that's NJ right on the other side?!) I was also there when the Queen Mary(right?!) and all the sailboats floated behind our backyard---that stretch of Delaware by the Commissary. I can't believe our base/Yard will be a cruise ship parking lot now.
It's been almost 20 yrs since I left! I wish I could just hop in a car and visit all those memories. Since I can't, I hope someone will share pics or comments about how the base and housing areas are like now. What's happened to our brick houses and the nearby empty stretch of docks by the Commissary? Can anyone actually get in that far in the base now?
Thanks for the memories! =)

Charlie was trying to impress Scirrotto and the rest of us with his thorough knowledge of pipefitting. He was show and telling John out loud in front of everyone:Hey this chill water system is coming along well.John replies: Charlie you stupid f#%king idiot thats not chill water its the main feed system. The whole space erupted busting up laughing in an uproar. Poor Charlie, he must of shrank down to about one foot tall. He turned tail and got the hell outta there but quick. Iloved when Scirrotto busted his chops. Johnny was A O.K.

I always like reading about "Home Jobs" at the yard. The wagon story was great. I once had mirrored blocks cut down to size by friends in 51 shop. Got the job back in a half a day proving that home jobs were priority 1. I'd like to read some other home jobs stories. Does anyone remember getting belt buckles from Jackie May?

Hello Ed Grassia. I see you're still in the Training business. Whatever happened to Karl Pusch and Sterling Phipps III?

Yo Harry Murray! You looked good in the Daily News. Congratulations on your New Year's Day finish. You too, Chaly Nicholas. Any truth to the rumor that Bob Shannon cut himself on purpose to get the sympathy vote from the judges?
Just kidding ... always love seeing the competition between Fralinger, Ferko, Quaker City, PA and Avalon.

To all Friends of John Noykoff, 72 Shop Rigger.

Just before the Christmas Holidays, John was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Presently, he is undergoing test to determine if there is cancer on other parts of his body. If there is no sign of other cancers in his body, the doctors believe he has a good cahance of recovery with treatment. John is in a lot a pain, and under medication.

John was at the yard from 1973 until it's closing. I will continue to update this website of John's status, as per his request. If you knew John he worked hard and played hard. Please keep him in your prayers.

If you would like to send a message to John, just send the email to the above address and I will make sure he receives your message.

Got the new millenium coming [of course us computer types will tell you that the millenium doesn't really start 'till next year but] and I wish all of you a happy and prosperous New Year.

The interest and participation in this page continues to amaze me. I started this page at the same time I started my Star Trek page, and originally the Trek page consumed all of my time updating. The Yardbird page has by far surpassed in interest and participation, and I am pleased by this because it is of more import.

I'd like to thank Ron Reeves X17 for his recent submissions of PNSY graphics which I've posted on the page. If anyone else has any logos, graphics, or pics, please contact me and I'll do what ever it takes to post them.

I've just added something new in regards to YardBird Experiences. I'm getting ready to start a new archive file because of the size of the Experiences file. From the main page, you will see a link to archives with a .txt extension. You can right click and save these links and print them with any ASCII viewer. I find it easier to read from hardcopy than from the monitor.

To all my fellow welders: HAPPY NEW YEAR

Favorite shipyard stories:
(1) Richie Cloud, sweating bullets, welding superheater tubes while boiler 4a climbs to 700 degress. "It's awful hot up here", Richie replys. Meanwhile, Guido (the stress reliever), has fallen fast asleep on the upper level, allowing the machine to excessively add heat to the boiler.

(2) I'll never forget the look on Buzz Flood's face when he read the note that Dick Early had left for him one morning after a twelve hour shift. Buzz, the allen keys did not fit the Astro-arc gun so I manually ground them down.

(3) Joe the Boss going to the dispensary in Mayport, Fla. to have seven pieces of metal removed from both eyes. Joe, you know you need to wear those safety glasses, especially when welding that damn "K" tube.

(4) Joe Matise, who had all of six hours welding experience at the time, attempted to do a home job in the welding school. Some poor bastard had brought in his kid's wagon to get repaired. Joe volunteered, "I'll do it" and proceeded to weld the wagon until it was absolutely unusable. Even the wheels wouldn't turn.

For those who don't know him he worked in 11 shop and towards the closer of the yard he worked as a clerk for the 11 shop head.
Here's a Zeb story. He was working on the flight deck of one of the carriers, and was on graveyard shift. Some welders that he was close to on day shift caught 2 birds and put them in his gang box. He opened the box which was in a dark spot on the flight deck. The birds flew out and Zeb hit the deck. He told me he thought he was going to have a heart attack. Dear Julio,
I was looking through your pictures of the yard and somehow it reminded me of my first day at the yard. It was August 17,1973 and I was going to and from the different buildings getting everything from my tool card to my hardhat. I could't believe all the ships that were there. There was a ship at every pier and a ship in every drydock, all in different stages of their overhauls. Now the yard looks like a ghost town. One things for sure, you can take me out of the shipyard, but, you can never take the shipyard out of me. It was a great place to work, and the people were great. Thanks for this website.

Even Philadelphia, already named to be closed, was involved to some degree in the Coopers and Lybrand scams - unfortunately, I never found what exactly they did there - I just know contract numbers and how much, the files were gone by the time I learned about and asked for them.

For the other Shipyard stories, starting at Mare Island where I made a determined stand to stop this, take a look at my web page -
http://www.california.com/~rhelbig/coopfraud.html - Coopers and Lybrand, Navy and TQM Fraud or Mistake - From first hand experience, I know this was no mistake, you do not deliberately disregard a legal opinion and order someone to repeat a mistake.

Thanks.

Someone noticed it and one by one all three gangs started tossing pennies on the deck in Dannys direction. One lucky toss actualy rolled right up to, and leaned up against Dannys shoe.We had some good times on those big grey things I'm glad we have this site to share these stories . I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. Jaybird, that story was told to me by Vince Hanahan, God rest his soul, back in the late '70's when we worked together in bldg. 57. The supervisor was Bill Cupples's father. He was also a G.F. They were working on new construction and Vince was one of the welders on the job. Mr. Cupples strategically placed all the welders in position and he told everyone that when he blew his whistle once everyone was to start welding. They were doing heavy production welding so they were using alot of amps. When he blew that whistle every welder struck their arc at the same time and blew out all the transformers. His smart move backfired on him. It took the electricians more than half the day to replace them. I would like to say hello to Johnny "boots" Battersby. It's nice to see that one of the good guys is still working at the yard. When I saw your post about Steve Clifton it reminded me of the times we (welders) used to do things to piss him off just to see him flip. That's why we called him Flipton. It wasn't personal just bustin balls. I forget what ship it was,Steve's gang was working on the jp-5 fueling stations by the flight deck. I sent Mike O'Mara up there to work with some of Steve's men. It just happened to be the space that had the coffee pot in it. You know how O'Mara liked his coffee.Well, Mike didn't have a cup so the guys gave him one, Steve's. It was a plastic mug. When Steve walked into the space and saw O'Mara drinking from his cup he flipped out. He grabbed the cup from O'Mara, dumped the coffee out and threw it on the deck and tried to stomp on it. He jumped on it so hard it shot out from under his foot and ricocheted off all the bulkheads. Everyone was ducking for cover. Then he picked it up and threw it into the river. You know O'Mara had a few choice words for him. Renee, can you say hello to the Mabee brothers for me, thanks. We all to bury the hatchet and just get along. Well, that's all for now,Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Julio - I have endured many a long post on your site, so, please do not censor my post. I'm sorry for the length but I feel it is necessary.

Hi there Folks.......

First and foremost - I wish a Happy Holiday to all of my favorite friends... especially 31 Shop's Jackie and Pam (I love you both and I know you read this page). Also Ricky, Jim Merkins, Lynn, Buddy L., Earl, etc. Julio, thanks for your generosity with your time and again, for this wonderful website.

Business --- Now. It seems as though we have a disgruntled behind the scenes character that feels the need to attack via personal notes. In honor of our special friend, I'd now like to share with the world the wonderful holiday greetings I've received as a result of my most recent post (which I thought was hilarious). So, I've taken the liberty to cut and paste this mans thoughts for you.

"Williams, James" wrote:

Renee, I don't know you, but you sure seemed offended by the mail on this web site.....if it upsets you that much maybe you shouldn't visit it anymore, afterall if you worked at the yard you should have realized that once you got in the main gate, you were subject to nasty comments, harrassment, wise cracks, ect. ect,....it comes with the territory babe, and yes maybe you should get back in the kitchen and burn dinner (after watching oprah, sally , soap operas, qvc, ect. ....Fold the wash....who cares.....answer the door with a smile.........If that was all you were wearing when your hard working husband came home, he'd probably smile too!
Calm down babe, or is it a PMS week? May you and yours have a Happy Holiday.
PS....Don't take things so seriously......like this e mail

Isn't this interesting guys???

My Reply: Mr. Williams Honey Dearest (or is it Mr. 56 Shop?), you've made my day - and now I hope to make yours. You make yourself look silly. Of course you do not know me. AT ALL! Otherwise, you would have recognized my sense of humor in the post. Funny, big man that you are attacking whom you think is this helpless little woman here..... may you learn some day that sarcasm does not necessarily breathe the truth. Your personality reminds me of the classic psycho scenario --- nice guy at work, clocks out, goes home, greets neighbors, closes door, kicks the dog then beats the ever loving sh*t out of his wife in front of the kids. Maybe you should take some of that advise you've so vehemently given to me and apply it elsewhere.

Dearheart, Often I am the one hoping to not have offended anyone with my posts. Had you scrolled back a few months, you'd have seen that. Guess I finally hit a nerve!!!! But just to bring you up to speed, I worked in and around 31 shop for 14 years and I ALWAYS have PMS. I have a cousin from 26 shop, a cousin from 11 shop, a father, a grandfather and an uncle from 72 shop, a brother from 64 shop, and ran with the worst of the rest. Do I get offended easily?? I grew up with shipyard stories at my dinner table daily and still do. Perhaps you should read some of my previous posts -- or did you just learn how to use this computer recently??? Get a clue and go talk privately to someone you DO know. OR better yet, grow some f*&*king balls on your hairless stump and go public. Your comments are not welcome in my personal email system and since, conveniently, I know who you are and where you work--- Not to mention that these emails and posts are coming FROM your work... I advise you to get off your horse and take a few steps back. Happy Kwanza to you my friend. OH, and by the way, no offense taken - just defense. ---R.O.---

So let me see if I've got this summary right. Welders are idiots and Trade Women are clueless now? Am I following this correctly? Being a woman, perhaps I'm missing something. Perhaps I should just head myself back into the kitchen now and concentrate on burning dinner. I found an old video tape from several sea trial runs for the CONSTELLATION and was just watching it with you and mostly design guys, including myself in it. Nice shot of everybody during one of those late night man overboard drills on the hanger deck.

I remember working the SCAN/LAKE/PRIDE with you guys from 360. I still have the Moore-McCormack Lines Towel (you guys kept the good stuff!)you guys recovered after an evening of dumpster diving when they cleared those crappy ships out. I also remember getting covered with a load of mud from the DFT tank when we were inspecting it and the piping, having a full scale evacuation of the shaft alley when somebody broke a mercury filled King gauge, the "magic" asbestos tape put up around broken lagging that somehow kept the asbestos within a two foot radius and the 12 hour shifts. I also remember having to eat my lunch on an upside down trash can in the 360 trailer because I couldn't get a desk in there! With all that said, I still miss the yard and was very proud of the work, dedication and abilities of the people we worked with there.

I saw John Skay on a golf outing (probably over a year ago). The Hammerhead Crane is long gone, there should be some pictures and articles about it on this site somewhere.

I hope you are doing well in Florida and the rest of the 360 guys are doing well too.

Just a pause to reflect on a few things and get on a different subject. This goes out to all my fellow yardbirds whom I steamed along with during sea trials. All the shops were important during sea trials but having been there and done that this hit home. I was on a POT&I with P&E in the early 80's for the Forrestal in Naples, Italy and upon seeing The Snipes Lament pasted on the back of #8 SSTG had to get a copy of it. Like I said all shops were important on sea trials but this should bring back memories to my fellow 38 Shop, and the 41 Shop guys we steamed with on sea trials especially when it was a total yard crew doing the steamin'. Here it goes:

              The Snipe’s Lament

Now each of us from time to time, has gazed upon the sea,
And watched the warships pulling out, to keep this country free,
And most of us have read a book, or heard a lusty tale,
About the men who sail these ships, through lightning, wind and hail,
But there’s a place within each ship, that legend fails to teach.

It’s down below the waterline, it takes a living toll -----
A hot metal living hell, that sailors call the “hole,”
It houses engines run by steam, that makes the shafts go round,
A place of fire and noise and heat, that beats your spirits down,
Where boilers like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam,
Are of molded gods without remorse, are nightmares in a dream.

Whose threat that from the fire roar, is like living doubt,
That any minute would with scorn, escape and crush you out,
Where turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in hell,
As ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell,
The men who keep the fires lit, and make the engines run,
Are strangers to the world of night, and rarely see the sun.

They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear,
Their aspect pays no living thing, the tribute of a tear,
For there’s not much that men can do, that these men haven’t done,
Beneath the decks, deep in the hole, to make the engines run,
And every hour of every day,, they keep the watch in hell,
For if the fires ever fail, their ships a useless shell.

When ships converge to have a war, upon an angry sea,
The men below just grimly smile, at what their fate might be,
They’re locked in below like men fore doomed, who hear no battle cry,
It’s well assumed that if they’re hit, the men below will die,
For every day’s a war down there, when the gauges all read red,
Twelve hundred pounds of heated steam, can kill you mighty dead.

So if you ever write their sons, or try to tell their tale,
The very words would make you hear, a fired furnace’s wail,
And people as a general rule, don’t hear of men of steel,
So little is heard about the place, that sailors call the hole
But I can sing about this place, and try to make you see,
The hardened life of men down there, cause one of them is me.

I’ve seen these sweat soaked hero’s flight, in superheated air,
To keep their ships alive and right, though no one knows they’re there,
And thus they’ll fight for ages on, ‘til warships sail no more,
Amid the boiler’s mighty heat, and the turbine’s hellish roar,
So when you see a ship pull out, to meet a warlike foe,
Remember faintly if you can, “THE MEN WHO SAIL BELOW.”
                                                    Author Unknown
Remember going to sea without all the lagging being done? Talk about hot !!!!
Remember the feeling coming back with the broom up on the mast ? Remember 6 on , 6 off ?

Ted-Bo:
When you stated, "I'll be glad to let this topic die with the hope that Julio will consider posting "etiquette tips" which would prevent further arguments." this statement could be interpreted as a veiled threat. That if julio didn't censor the site you wouldn't let the topic die. If you didn't mean it that way..sorry...but the statement is open to interpretation. As for not wanting to "torture" everyone further. I stated a while ago that this was getting redundant and should be put to bed. However, you thought it was a good idea to toss this tired dog of an argument around a little more. I am glad you finally see things my way.
The great thing about this "free world" that we live in is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The problem arises when some people start forcing their opinions on others. As for your claim that the "average co worker" would agree with your points. Just look at the wide range of ex-shipyard workers that agree with my ideas (eg 26, 17, 56, 31, and 11 shops). Just because these people disagree with what you are saying does not make them "ankle nipping sidekicks". (By the way, it doesn't look good in my nurses skirt if I have Jaybirds teeth marks on my ankles).

Some more Wackos would have to be the guys on 2nd shift that smeared feces on the door handles of Mike Kozack's shipyard truck doorhandles seat and steering wheel. They sholud have just blown that truck up after that incident. LA Smith what did they ever do with that truck???? Why would anyone have wanted to be a boss when you had to deal with guys that would do something like that?
Christmas is upon us. Any good x-mas party stories????

Scrolling back over these lengthy posts I can imagine how laborious this verbage has become to the typical reader. Repetitive to the point that they are not reading "either" of our volleys. I for one don't intend to torture them further. I will however answer your questions by personal e-mail, if you are willing to invest the time without the audience.

I didn't intend this to become an intense discussion, with Nurse Joe defending the "free world" with an occasional one-line participation by his ankle nipping sidekicks. I believe the average co-worker that I knew, would agree with the points I made. Since this media is new, I'm sure there will be court rulings with regard to liability of slander on the net in the not too distant future, and people can take there lead from that. However Nurse Joe, don't falsly quote me, I never said that "I would continue to come on this site and argue this until he starts censoring the content".

**********************************************************************

Now I will relate a story about probably one of the most "colorful" persons I remember, "Jake the Marine" who left the yard in the mid-eighties to return to New York to enter the police academy. This guy was so focused; the NYPD was all he could talk about. I should say the NYPD and the 'Corps. He loved the 'Corps so much he still dressed in the greens including the cap. Day after day he would torture the crew of whatever LPH we were working on with his 'Corps banter, enlisted man and officers alike.

At that time you could drive throughout the industrial area, and on many evenings when we would work over, Jake would go on a dinner run. Everyone at drydock #3 would wait for his return in his Jeep, waving flags mounted on the front fenders, and the Marine Corps Hymn blaring on his 8 track.

Tedbo:
You want me to take stabs at some questions you posed me, but you don't want to answer the ones that I initially posed to you. I asked what ground rules would you impose, and what specific story so upset you that you want this site censored. I thought the stories in general upset you, but then you flip flop on the issue with the Steve cliffton stories. I thought these stories were great, even though I didn't know the man, because we all had a foreman similar to this one (Joe Depaolo, Harry DeGeorge in X-26). Good guys who would lose their temper occassionally. However to play devil's advocate for a moment, if I used the Tedbo system of illogic poor Mr. Cliffton's children or other family could come on see these stories and be upset. Their father, who they always viewed as a gentle person, is being portrayed as a raving lunatic. Oh my, lawyers get your legal pads ready for this lawsuit. Now this is not what I think, but the few sh#thouse lawyers that seem to be so alarmed by everything could argue this as another reason for Julio to censor this site. How can you, TedBo, rant and rave about certain stories then say how womderful the Mr. cliffton stories were. So once again I ask you to answer the question I posed to you a while back (that YOU never answered). What ""Etiquette tips" (man you do like to spin things. Just say censorship tips and be done with it) would you impose. What stories would good old Stevebo want removed from this site. Steve Cliffton stories in, anything from 26 shop out???? Please give us your views on what is moral and good. I think I did answer some of your questions before (even though you did not answer mine). I never gave explicit details on anyone's deeds (eg. remember on the Saratoga when so and so from 38 shop was down the shaft alley with.......). Have to be repetitive here, but the Walker story was not explicit, and the main reason I even mentioned it was to tell the story of the following night when the male and female police did a stall by stall search of the 620 bldg mens head. that my friends was funny.
As for me wanting to drop this subject matter. Sorry my friend, but I could come on here everyday and shoot down the few points that you make. Then you try and bully Julio by saying that you'll continue to come on this site and argue this until he starts censoring the content. Don't you realize that we all worked at the shipyard and are not easily intimidated.
So come Stevebo what stories do YOU think are appropriate. Which specific story offends YOU so much that you want "etiquette tips" used as a way of shutting up the people that YOU don't like.

I'm horrified. He was mooned??? what a tragedy. Don't get me wrong these are great stories, I enjoyed them. However, the point is these are the things old Steve-o and Web-o would like to be banished from the shipyard site. Boots, great stories! Although I never witnessed those events, they capture Steve's personality perfectly, displaying his enthusiasm with his work, and his frustration in the process. I hope you understand that by your earlier post, and the nature of some of the mud slinging published here, I expected the worst. Sorry!

Joe Cloud, as for whoever the anonymous person was who was mad at you previously, it wasn't me. However, I'm not surprised in the least considering your nature, you seem to have a tendency to frustrate people.

I understand completely that you would like to drop this subject, but why don't you take a stab at those questions I posed for you? I'm not surprised that you don't care to answer them, but considering how you rambled about censorship earlier, it doesen't seem like you.

It's interesting that you asked your family to read my post, could you possibly looking to validate your position? Since you obviously value their input, why don't you consider asking them two simple questions; "Is it right to talk bad about others?" or; "Is it in good taste to publish the embarrassing actions of others, without their knowledge or consent?"

As for putting this topic to rest, I would be delighted. The only reason I became involved in the first place was I couldn't stand reading of "reputations of others being trashed, and the defense of that deprived behavior". Stang is right on the mark, peace & joy should prevail, however, forgiveness should be reserved for those who were wronged by the posted comments.

Nurse Joe you mention "the holidays" which I'm glad you celebrate, but can't you understand they honor everything, which is contrary to the behavior which you defend.

I'll be glad to let this topic die with the hope that Julio will consider posting "etiquette tips" which would prevent future arguments. And lets be realistic, this is all common courtesy stuff.

As for Jay Billups suggestion that I might "have some stuff in my closet I'm afraid of getting out", I can't recall any, but I'm sure there's something. I'm sorry to say I'm not very "colorful". However I'm also not that old guy who's retired from the back channel, you were hammering last week. If you really want to dig into my past, I'd be more than happy to discuss it with you, up close and personal. Give me a call; I'm in the book!

Peace and Joy of an Advent Season be with all!

It looks like I have to set the record right about Steve Cliffton. I would nver put Steve thru a ringer. It was a pleasure working for Steve. He did have a colorful personality, and he made you feel like a man because he never had to look over your shoulder when doing a job for him, or check your work all the time. You said job was done, he signed it off. Average worker, no way. Steve was probley one of the most knowledgeable boss's in 56 shop. I dont think there was a system he didnt know about. Other boss's used to get advise from Steve when they were having problems with there jobs. He was a very hard worker. When Steve left the yard, it was the Navy Yards loss. Steve went in business for himself. He bought a gas Station somewhere in Pa.Knowing Steve he probley sold the business and into bigger things.

When I said he should be Wack-o of the Mill, I was refering to some of the things Steve did when he lost his temper. Like the night down in Fla when I threw his alarm clock in the pool at the Condo we were staying at, so he would over sleep amd get up late. No way, he stayed up and banging on our door to make sure we were up and ready to go to work. There was a time at muster, Steve was mad about something. He takes his hat off and kicks it like a football, and Tom C. another boss making a sign like it was a field goal and saying, off to the right Steve no good. Or like the time Steve was coming off the ship and he looked down at the conex box's and he got mooned by(Cant say his name) a person. Steve came running down the gang way and started going thru all the box's to find the guy, but never did. Sorry to take up all this time, but I would never put Steve down, becuse it was a pleasure working for Steve, just wanted to tell some funing stories about him because he made you laugh when he lost his temper. This is why I was putting Steve in for the Whack_O of the Mill.

Thanks again for having this Yard-Bird page. I E-Mailed a couple old friends and they have replied already. With out this page a would of probley never got intouch with them, Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Ted bo and Webby:
Who said anything about nobody reading these posts. What i said was that the odds on a family member reading these stories and being traumatized were slim. I also said that i went back and read the posts in question and there was nothing nasty or vulgar in any of them. I never read anything about anyone's "indescretions" on TDY. The post about Mr. Walker, as I stated, was never explained. If you didn't know the story it wouldn't matter if you came across it or not. As I asked before please list the specific story that was so upsetting that you want this site censored. When I listen to you two guys I realize that it had to be one of you that was the anonymous guy who was so upset with me last year. Come on fess up which one. If you are going to say "Good point so and so......" Please make sure you understand what was said in the first place.
Stang I agree with you, let's stop the arguing the holidays are upon us.

Good Points tedbo, if Joe Cloud is so sure nobody is reading these postings then who are the 40,000 hits that LA SMITH talks about?

Also I don't think it's fair to Julio, after all he's been kind enough to maintain this site. It would be terrible if he was drawn into the middle of a slander lawsuit on account of some idiot telling lies about somebody he had it in for years ago!

Even if there on case, he would have to get a lawyer, and all to aggervation not to mention the cost!!!

Do yourself a big favor Julio, get some advice on this ASAP!!

Happy HOLLY DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Ted Bo x-56. You have a lot to say about our posts. The posts that I have posted I know to be true, and if somebody wants to take me to court about it BRING 'EM ON. You mention Mayport And Long Beach. Could it be you have some reservations (guilt) about time there on TDY. I do not remember any posts about Mayport or Long Beach. Maybe you have some stuff in your closet you are afraid of getting out. If so that's your problem. I do not know you personally and you know what, I'm glad I don't.

Let's put this to rest, it is getting so redundant. You, Ted bo, don't like some of the comments or stories being listed on this page, while there are quite a few people who look at these as strolls down memory lane. You have voiced your opinion, and I respect your view on this subject. Where YOU cross the line here is telling Julio that he must edit out (censor) these stories and/or comments. I start to feel like I am in a Orwellian tale and "Big Brother" is watching and trying to control what we say and read. You should have just voiced your opinion and let it die. As for calling me a "gossip" and "pathetic" I was devastated. My wife, son, and daughter all read your post and were traumatized terribly by the mean and slanderous things you said. Yeah right. Get real.

We all know, Joe Cloud, that you can go on and on about what citizens fought and died for, but don't trivialize their great sacrifice to justify your pitiable urge to harm anothers' character with your slanderous comments. I'm confidant that when these brave men questioned why they fought, the idea "To protect the right to badmouth private citizens" never made the list.

However, a person can justify just about anything, provided they have the stomach for it. And if "the issue" gets lost in the argument a person might think there are valid points which you make. Once again, let's review what you and a "few" others are trying to defend.

"The unimpeded ability to publish any negative or unflattering tale about former co-workers you can recollect without regard for that individual's well being, or how the impact of that story could affect that individual's relationships with their family, or their social standing within their communities."

I know you make light of the possibility of repercussions as a result of your handiwork; you believe the "odds are slim" of a family member stumbling on to these stories. How do you know? What guarantees can you provide? Are you willing to accept the responsibility of a marriage breakup due the exposure of co-worker's indiscretions 15 years ago in Mayport or Long Beach? I realize that you are a budding novelist, however are there any "limits" or "taboo subjects" which you won't reveal about your former co-workers? Please tell us, Nurse Joe, where do YOU draw the line?

You've stated everything "YOU SAY" is 100% truth; the National Enquirer also makes that same claim. What you are calling "the truth" is YOUR recollection of "your perception" of events. I doubt if the people that you are slandering would agree with this definition of the truth.

A recent posting mentioned the name of Steve Cilffton of 56 shop, I worked with and around him for several years. I would say he was enjoyable to work with because he had a colorful personality. Although he was average in his trade, he was a hard worker without fear of trying to learn something new. If along the way, he made some embarrassing mistakes, WHO CARES! This guy would give you the shirt off his back, and personally helped me several times on central ac jobs without looking for compensation. He quit the yard for a better job back in the mid-eighties, does he deserve to be run thru the ringer because John (Boots) Battersby has "some juicy fodder"?

Understand I'm not trying to convince you, I realize that you and your gossiping sidekicks, Jay Billups and Ray Stonelake are so entrenched that that can't happen. I just feel sad and amazed that you have a need to ridicule these former co-workers so much, that you actually try to defend such despicable behavior. Frankly, I find it pathetic.

Haven't these individuals paid the price for their actions yet, wasn't the embarrassment they endured when the events happened, and throughout the rest of their career while still working at the yard enough?

Apparently you and your buddies have decided "no not enough", perhaps along with printing their shortcomings here, you could have them also engraved on their headstones! Would that satisfy your need to ridicule from afar?

It was great to see the posting by Boots. Boots was one of the best for breaking them on people, but also one of the best to work with. It reminds of how many people at the yard did we only know by their nicknames and it wasn't till years later when we actually learned their named people like Boots, Junkyard, Buddha, Tapper, etc. I sure there are many more. I have to agree the stories are terrific.

My father was stationed on the Philly Naval Base during the yrs of 1983-86. I was between the ages of 9-11 yrs old at the time, but remember it like it was yesterday. I was so dis-appointed when I heard about the Base closing down. Afterall, I had hoped to visit it one day with my husband and children. Even though it is no longer a Base, I would still like to go and see it.
Do alot of the same buildings exist now that were there when it was a Base? I lived in the brick housing to the right of the commissary, along the river. My backyard faced the river, and it could be seen from my kitchen window. I rememeber always roller skating in the commissary parking lot with my friends, when it closed for the day. I also recall some field where my parents would play baseball (Mintin Field?), that sat behind a shopping plaza. The dirty river, and all the dead fish... and oh the stench! And of course, I will never forget the airplanes going over-head every 5 minutes! I hated that I had to leave the Base everyday to go to Andrew Jackson Elementary School. I hated the city with a passion!
Well, I hope to hear anything you may have to tell me about the Base as it exists now. It has been a good 16-17 yrs since I was last there, which was when we left the Base. It is truely sad to see that it is gone.
Thank You,
Navy Brat Brown

This is a continuation of my earlier post. I had to play caddy for my daughter and drive her to school. Ted bo censorship on the web is not common, as the Supreme court protected first amendment rights by striking down CDA. Sure there are certain chat room that if profanity is used you may be booted ou, but this is a far cry from what you are asking Julio to do. I read my post about Mr. Walker and no where is there pornographic or vulgar details about what happened. If you know the story from your days at the shipyard fine, you'll remember. As for family members coming on and seeing this, there were alot of walker's at the Yard. (I am just using my post as an example). The odds on someone's family members coming on and seeing something that would traumatize them is very, very, far fetched. As for your, mine, or anyone's children coming on this site and seeing something so terrible that it would harm them...come on. They see things 100x's worse on prime time television or while surfing the web every single day. Please give me specific examples of what you see on here that would harm your child's well being. For that matter what child is going to sit at this site and read these posts. they would stay here for about a half a second. There are some people's opinion's and posts that I have not agreed with at this and other sites, but I would never tell someone to censor these said opinions.
You want Julio to set up "groundrules" and edit comments of those that don't comply. Let's pretend that you are on the rules committee and let us know what you feel can and can't be posted here. Maybe we should hire Pat Buchanan to help out here. I go back to an earlier post that Jaybird wrote and would have to echo his opinion (and i am paraphrasing here) Didn't we send soldiers to war for the right to protect our freedoms? One of those said freedoms is Freedom of speech. Don't just give this away because you and other narrow minded indiviuals don't like people telling some old war stories. For the record, every single post or story that I wrote i know to be 100% true. They are not fabrications.
Thanks again Julio. I feel like I am arguing with Bobby (The Mayor of 57 Bldg.) Madonna at lunch again.
Take care Nurse Joe

Julio:
Before I answer the post of Mr. Ted Bo I just wanted to again thank you for this website. These discussions remind me of the many disagreements that we would argue about back and forth on the "iron".
Ted Bo you state, "The bottom line I believe is common decency and civility should be followed, but it doesn't and that is why we need rules that are not needed for the many, but for the few." Whose definition of common decency and civility should we follow here. I am sure a devoutly religious Baptist minister's definition is different from a Sunday only church going Catholic. While one a has strict hardline definition the other's is probably more flexible. How about a KKK member's definition (which I do not support). His definition is probably that no minority is decent or civil and should be disposed of. I take this to an extreme, but my point is that there are many different morale and ethical backgrounds ou there. Who is to say what we can or can't say is morally wrong???? Should we follow your definition of what is civil or decent? Whose then? No matter how you spin doctor what you wrote in your post it is still censorship. In a landmark 1997 decision the United States Supreme court declared the internet to be deserving of the highest First Admendment protection as it struck down the so called Communication Decency Act (CDA). I went back and read every post that was written about the so called All Millenium "Wacko" team. There is nothing in these posts that would call for censorship of any kind. I have to go now, but will finish my post later. I respect your right to post your opinion.....I just totally disagree with it.

To set the story straight, I wrote Julio a letter a few weeks back questioning the idea of this "comments & experiences page" because I rarely see any posts from him.

I also wondered if what it had become was what he had orginally intended, and if he was comfortable with what some people were posting when it related to unflattering stories about co-workers. Since he is the Webmaster he does have certain responsibilities when it comes to matters of law with regards to material, which is published here. Those laws protect individual's rights from slander, and I suggest if you are thinking of posting a tale, you would be wise to consider the following:

· This is a public forum, posting a story here is like pasting it on the entryways to local malls.

· Individuals have a right to privacy; they are not public figures and are protected from public ridicule by unsubstantiated hearsay.

· Freedom of speech is NOT ABSOLUTE, there are various cases where it is prohibited, and others where it is punishable by punitive damages being awarded.

· Censorship on the web is common, there are many message boards and chat rooms where comments are monitored, and members are "booted out" for unacceptable participation.

· There IS a great difference between a "few guys telling a story over lunch", and "one individual posting the exploits of another on the World Wide Web", especially when it deals with personal conduct such as "morning drinking habits", or another's "3rd shift escapades"

I worked at the yard for nine years, and met many "colorful" individuals whose escapades bring a smile to my face every now and again. However I have no desire to post those stories for everyone to read, possibly one of their family members. It just isn't right, plain and simple.

Bud Applegate has recently stated that some stories are "straying from the truth". I believe that EVERYONE has done foolish or stupid things, or has skeletons in their closets. This format is not the place to expose those events, and if it continues I predict serious consequences could occur ranging from litigation to personal retaliation.

I believe all this can be avoided if Julio would setup ground rules, and edit comments of those who do not comply. This is not censorship, it is controlling those who simply cannot control themselves. Or setup a side link which could be entered "at your own risk", though I believe he still could be held responsible for the entries.

The bottom line I believe is common decency and civility should be followed, but it doesn't and that is why we need rules that are not needed for the many, but for the few.

Let's keep it clean, and save the unflattering stories for the tap rooms.

Happy Holidays, ted bo

I've been working a few extra shifts and haven't had a chance to check out the site for a few days, but when I did the shipyard seems to be in an uproar. All this because of a post from MR. C. J. Welliver of 38 shop. to all my fellow shipyard workers who were offended by this post please be kind. These are the words of an elderly gentleman from a different era, who now sees time passing him by and longs for the "old days". Working with the elderly in the hospitals i see this all the time and it can be sad. However, I do not understand the double standard that he seems to live by. He states, "Yes we would talk about the dumb things coworkers would do, get a laugh or two...but we would never put them in print for the world to see." So let's see, it's ok to make fun of these "respected" fellow workers for the things they did, but don't put them in print. You did just that when you told the story of the guy trying to steal the square. You will say that you didn't name him. What difference does it make? None! This makes you one of those "QUASI-WOMEN" that you so dispise. As for the supposed "Quasi-Women" insult what's up with that. Do you actually look down on our female counterparts so much that you consider this an insult. I work with a lot of women who would freak on you for this comment. Your ancient thinking of not arguing with a women would go right out the window when they were done verbally whipping you.
You make comments like we were men not boys.....jailbird (I think you may be right with this nickname after the guy you were talking about went to a few mummer's parades)........nurse (as I said in the past I am a quasi-woman. the skirts never seem to look good with my legs though) These were the feeble attempts of a dinosaur to cause insult and pain.
My friend I am not upset with your old way of thinking, no that comes from being someone who is stuck in a different era. What upsets me is that you want everyone else to go back and be stuck there with you.
Life goes on...this is a very different world form the 40's and 50's. I hope when I am your age I am not telling people, "That's nothing in the old days.............."

Just remembered one of the classics at the yard. How many of you remember the guy who used to stand on the forward edge of the flight deck and talk to the planes coming in to Philly Airport? Don't remember his shop (might have been 64) or name. Heard he used a real radio one time and got in trouble, but that could be a rumor.
Also recall an incidnet where it was summer time and there were a few dozen guys eating lunch at the head of the drydock near the caisson, and the Spirit of Philly tour boat was coming by. A bunch of guys got up and "mooned" the boat! All the time the people on the boat were waving to us and we waved back like nothing was going on. Guess they were too far away. It takes all kinds to make a shipyard!
I Remember my first shop Christmas party at the yard. Me and another guy stuffed our jackets with cans of beer until they were bulging and were going to visit the field shops. We were walking in front of 57 bldg and this Navy Captain comes running over, yelling, "hey, you guys there, stop right now!". We were feeling "pretty good" and thought we were in deep-%$#@. When this guy finally gets to us we realize he's plastered to the gills and just wanted to wish us happy holidays. After he staggered off, I recall saying to my buddy, lets just go back to the shop, its safer there.

Julio, for some reason I couldn't get this message to post, maybe I should wait for my son who is coming home for the holiday!

Anyway I read your page a lot but I don't say much, but thought I should weigh in on this. I like to check out the deaths each week. So we are out here!

Thanks for your efforts!
CJ

I would like to respond to that letter you received concerning some comments on this page. I worked at the yard many years…… earlier when I learned my trade and we really "built ships"…. And later when we were booming with overhaul work.. I worked in the "back channel" on the subs when we were retrofitting them for Iran. There were all kinds of people working in the yard. A few I would consider almost saints, and others, fewer still were the lowest of the low. Simply put it was a mini-city with all walks of life working side by side.

Yes there was a bond, but that didn't mean you ate your lunch with everyone. Naturally you gravitated closer to those you felt a kinship with, be it by race or ethnic heritage or organizations such as the masons that had a strong presence for years.

Still there was respect! Yes we would talk about the dumb things coworkers would do, get a laugh or two…but we would never put them in print for the world to see.

If a guy got out of hand and razzed a fella too much, that guy would end up with a bloody nose and that would be the end of it. And no one thought any less of either of them.

THEY WERE MEN!

NOT QUASI-WOMEN GOSSIPING OVER AN ELECTRONIC FENCE! Hiding behind a keyboard and a computer taking cheap shots at people who cannot answer back or defend themselves.

There are many stories; I know you all have some good ones. Do youself a favor raise the bar just a little.

I remember a fella, (who will remain nameless) who wanted to steal a 2 foot square, it was winter and he had to walk thru Checkpoint Charlie, so he got the idea to stuff it inside his coat, the problem was he was small and the only way it would fit was down his side and out one sleeve, I guess you can image what this looked like his right arm sticking straight out. So at 4pm he got in a crowd and when he was 20 yards before the gate he started running and calling out a guy's name and all the time pointing with this frozen arm. "Hey Harry, Harry… it's me… I need a ride…. Harry…. Wait up" And made his way right thru the checkpoint.

If you really need to gossip, I think the idea of a "gossip page" sounds pretty good, after all it seems most of the offenders are welders. Why don't you guys link a "Welders Site" where you could speak your mind about everybody and everything. If others were really interested, they could go there, but at least they wouldn't have to wade thru the useless comments of a guy who calls himself "the nurse" or another called "jailbird". To read worthwhile thought out comments.

This way, nobody would be censored, and nobody would be offended. Julio, I know you worked hard on this site, and you must be considering this option or you wouldn't have mentioned it. Do us all a favor, link a separate page! I am quite older now, but I long for the day when men were men. They acted like men, not boys, and they understood where the line was. They didn't use vulgarity in front of women even if the women used it themselves. In fact we would never even argue with a woman, for, just that fact, the argument was wrong … not to mention the subject matter which was being discussed.

We didn't tell the little league players when they addressed us as Mister, "I'm not Mr. Jones, my dad is, just call me Rob", because we accepted the responsibility of adulthood, and acted the part.

I'm in my 60's now, but I think I could still teach a few of you boys a thing or two, one way or another. And it won't have anything to do with what that wacky guy did that you are all so fixated with. In fact, I really think a few of you welders have more in common with him than you care to admit.

There will be a Pearl Harbor Memorial Service 7 December at 10AM on Pier Four in shipyard. This service is open to the public, through the courtesy of Hon. Rob Andrews (D-NJ), and is his 9th year of conducting this service. Lets all turn out Tuesday to honor the memory of those who gave thier lives so we can be free, and to say "hello" to the congressman who you all know was a true friend of us workers. There alas is no other way in getting into the yard as your military ID's or civillian ID's will not get you in because it is now an industrial park, and you MUST have an ID from those people and a decal on your vehicle to get in. Probably have to go to 501 to have this done not sure if you will make out OK but maybe someone can test the waters and report...Cheers, and Have a Nice Turkey Day, and lost of FOOTBALL.....

It's been a long time since I've been able to get into the site. Some kind of glitch in our system here. Anyway, was looking at the pictures of the yard and saw the front of good old 17 shop (990) with the water tower in the background. To the right of the door you can see where someone painted out the 17 Shop logo. I remember it was designed by Ron Reeves and my brother, Mike Dixon, (x17, P&E)in the early '80's. I swear you can see a shadow on the wall to the left of the door where the time clock booth stood for years. Remember once when we were going home and went out to the booth to clock out and discovered some "ham-bone" had taken a dump on the clock! What a country! Trying to think of a good "Millenium wacko" but there are just too many that come to mind! I guess we all went a little wacko there at least once in our careers. Nice to be back on-line. Wish a few more tin-knockers or design types would log on. Everyone take care and have a great Thanksgiving.

I would have to totally agree with Joe Cloud. When we relate to others about the yard there are many stories out there. The endless search for a pinocole game, or the best place in S. Philly to sneak out for lunches. But I have to admit 56 shop also had our share of colorful charecters. Who can forget guys like Bob, the monginger, Harrigan. Julio, thanks for this website. It keeps us yardbirds connected. And keep the stories. Like us yardbirds, they are part of what made the shipyard a great place to work. (and how many times had people said FTP, they didn't realize it that was prob. one of the best jobs, we ever had, though i love my job now).

Quick "Big Al" story. The Kitty Hawk was in DD 5. Big Al as we all know LOVED overtime. There was one weekend they knocked OT off. Al tried in vain to get a day on the weekend. At muster at the end of the shift on Friday, everybody in the DryDock gangs had 2 pink cards for the weekend, and we all waved them at Big Al as he walked by. His face got so red and he just steamed toward the cattle car. The kicker was the cards were just a decoy. Nobody worked that weekend.

jaybird how you doing ? don't have any big al stories , but how about a mike rodgers story!!!
i was sub-arcing on the uss lexington putting down the new steel on the flight deck. my partner was john mastropieri. we were using what they called the little giant , it was portable so to speak. had a track if needed or you could steer it. anyway mike was the boss. it was a friday afternoon and mike aprroached us asking if there was any equipment we might need for the weekend job. so off the top of my head i told mike that he would have to call andy dank and get us a new battery for the little giant. as the battery made it run down the track. he bought this story and proceed to call andy. picture mike rodgers asking andy for a battery. needless to say they argued for quite a while. mike was not a happy camper that afternoon, he kinda got pissed at me. this incident was so funny i heard it made the gf's meeting. gerry evans brought it up!!!. maybe LA SMITH can confirm it.

Julio,
This is a short note in reply to the ex-shipyard worker who wanted you to censor this site. I will acknowledge that we all come from different moral backgrounds, but what was this guy talking about when he stated that "You have the responsibility to uphold the image and the integrity of the thousands who labored and gained the respect of a nation." Did he work at the same place we did? If so when? As many of you know I am in the nursing field now, and constantly tell the people I work with about the good times we had. How a large group of people from many different lifestyles and backgrounds could come together as a team to accompish many a tough job. That I will agree is part of the image that I remember of my fellow workers. However, let's be honest here, shipyard workers to a large extent were a blue collar mix of some of the most colorful individuals that I have ever met in my entire life. These stories are part of what made going to the shipyard more than just a job at times. You never knew what was going to happen. I will always be proud of the work we did at the shipyard, but the stories are the things that live on in my mind. I totally respect this man's opinion to express the fact that he doesn't like these stories, but for him to ask you to censor this site because HE feels it's wrong is totally inappropriate. Censorship of any kind is wrong. I think the large majority of visitors at this great site enjoy the stories, because it brings back fond memories. Keep up the great work Julio and don't buckle to the "Moral Majority".

About 10 years ago we were granted access. Accompanying my dad at the time were my wife Connie, daughter Kelley and me. Is there any way we could arrange another visit for:
John Sr.,

Hi Julio, I'm glad that I located your web-sit and e-mail address as I am out of touch with most of the ol' X67 Shop folks. I spoke with one of my old PNSY X67 Shop co-workers today (his name is Jim Mc Coullough) -- he told me that he received a notice about 2 weeks ago pertaining to a X67 reunion sometine next month (December). He asked me if I were going to the reuinon (I worked in X67 for about 9 years from 1965 through 1974 before I moved onto the PNSY Planning Department) -- I told Jim that I have not received any x67 reunion notice (I did attend the last reunion in 1997 in Nerw Jersey -- I believe it was held at Ron Jowarski's golf club). I would appreciate a reply/response from you and/or someone else if you/they could provide me with any info regarding a proposed/planned PNSY X67 Shop Reunion.
Thank you. Joe Steinhauser.

I received the following e-mail from an ex-YardBird a few days ago. I haven't been able to contact him, so I've left his name out.
I think he brings up some valid concerns in regard to this webpage.
It's certainly something to think about when sending in your Navy Yard stories!
Your comments and ideas are welcomed.

------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Julio,

It's nice to see that someone decided to setup a site for the thousands who labored at that historic yard. As I viewed your pictures I was reminded of a short trip I had to the credit union this past summer, and the short trip I made thru "checkpoint charlie" all the way to your old shop which was as far as I could go. The sites of the buildings sitting there frozen in time, or slowly decaying, saddened my heart. Although at the time I didn't realize the working conditions were slightly above deplorable, I enjoyed the work and the people. It taught me to appreciate the value of a better job.

On another note, my I suggest that you include some type of "ground rules" for your comments page. My personal opinion is that I would like to read comments and short stories but not at the expense of a fellow workers chacter. I would also like to permit my kids to view this site without concern of "who did what" in the ladies locker room. Perhaps a solution could be a link to a "gossip page" which would not be "officially sanctioned" by you.

Think of a son or daughter who's father worked for years at the yard, maybe he recently pasted away and they surf the wed and find unsubstantiated tales of his "adventures". Personally, I don't believe it's appropriate. As web master, you have the right to edit any comments submitted. Also I might add, you have the responsibility to uphold the image and the integrity of the thousands who labored and gained the respect of a nation.

Thank for all your work to keep the Yard alive.

I have a whacko or two for you in 990: Remember Norman Kotok: I remember once he was eating his lunch on the INDY, and after he was finished his sandwich he would turn the plastic bag inside out and lick off the contents. He even turned the lunch bag indside out and did the same thing then he'd lick his hands like a cat....Second whacko was Tom McKinnon aka 'The Speckled Chicken" he used to have an oven under his workbench and every lunchtime he'd cook a whole chicken in it, and over the years the oven got so greasy one time he went to the head and came back to find his bench on fire. Henson got pissed, and made him take out the oven and throw it in the scrap. I also remember Freddy Dollar who used to fix the bikes for the bosses he had so many bike parts behind the dip tanks that you couldn't move to open the valves. he moved his 'shop' to the boiler room. Also recall Billy Rapone who made a small boat out of 1/8 aluminum, and put it in the dip tank and got in it to test it-now theres a real whacko. Come on 17 guys you should know a few nominees for the Millenium Whacko nominations....

Remember when the Aardvark crossing sign was installed in "A" bay in 57 building?
Remember when "Old Man" Harris came out of the men's head still trailing a whole roll of toilet paper from the back of his pants?
Remember when Silas put a can of soup in the welding oven without poking any holes in it?
Remember when the sleeping welder got duct taped to the chair he was sleeping in?
I wonder who cut the round wheels into square ones on Johnny Agius' roving tool box?
Remember when Richie Palmer went to open his tool box lock and found it covered in blue dykem, then to wipe his hands off on the nearby rag only to find out the rag was soaked with it as well?

I remember the first time I saw him on some DDg or something, he was reading the gospel or something in the galley of the ship about 0725......I didn't know weather to leave or genuflect. And Bernard (from Brooklyn) could really wind some guys up with his prejudice bullshit talk. How about "Cato" who worked in 07 shop?, another academy award winner, almost burned my eyes out with a torch. And yes Trish , your e mail address is wrong. Heard from Tom "The Canadiens used to be good?" Fink, and he came up with a wacko that I can't believe no one has named. temember the 11 shop girl who used to walk around cursing at the hand held mirror she had. A scary sight. I used to work with her on night work when she was religious and could hold a very intelligent conversation. What was her name and what actually happened that she wound up like that. Schizophrenia?????? Anyone know. Speaking of night work I have to pay homage to the first fitter that I worked with on that shift. "The Slammer" was his name (his actual name I do not remember). He acted deaf as a doornail, but I think he could hear more than people thought. Jaybird want to laugh...remember the day Ronnie russo painted a pigs face on a helium balloon tied it on a string and taped it to pete the cops back. Pete walked around 57 building for five minutes with this thing following him while he tried to figure out why all of 57 building was laughing. when Tom French finally told him he was ready to kill Ronnie. Where is Russo these days, Did he ever go to Seattle??
Happy thanksgiving Nurse Joe

Hey Jaybird,

How about that Rich Harold form x26 not his dad from 06. He fits in with Whiskey Al and Rich King. One day in the summer Rich decided to take Jim Hemnson's bike to the BBq pit over by the exchange I guess to have a few brews and mabe make room for a pretzel or two. He decided to eat with Lee Smalley , if you knoiw Rich, he couldn't keep his mouth shut unless he was swallowing some suds. Anyway he decide to make some remarks about the chicken that Leee was eating. I guess Lee took as much as he could before he decided to pummel old sloshed up Rich into the dirt and then Poor Jim Hensons bike was totaled . He came to me to see if I could help him out with some new rims and tires . I couldn't help him though.

Another time He was sent home form the Job I think for being intoxicated so he decided to hitchike down Porter Ave .Guess who9 stopped him? Nate the Cop in civvys. No need to tell what was said but Rich was saying some ethnic derrogatory things that almost landed him in jail and almost fired.

One last Rich Harold story. My brother and I stopped in a Bar at Front and Allegheny and who is sitting there on the other side but Rich, he was pretty toasted as usual, needless to say he started saying things to me that made me laugh but little brother didn't think it was so funny. Let's just say you won't see rich Harold in that bar again neat time He'll get stay on the el train.

Al was pretty intelligent when it came to trade theory and the other courses at the apprentice school. I remember he used to hide a six-pack of 16 oz. Black Label in the head in the trash can in Bldg. 100. during school. He would go to the head to get a refill. I car pooled with him for about a week. I was on third shift when "Wack-away" Walker sat in the girls locker room in 620 building and did his infamous deed in front of that 17 shop girl. No one knew anything until the following night when the base police stormed the men's bathroom after muster looking for him. There were all these guys taking care of their bodily functions while men and women cops strolled through the stalls checking for this crazy welder.
Another great guy who was crazy was Tom Sheedy. Didn't he chase Mike Murphy with a baseball bat at one of the picnic? I did witness him kick ed "why didn't anyone like me" grater's ass when Ed told Tom to "F#@K off" on the Indy hanger bay. It was crazy because people said that to others at the shipyard about a million times a day. Tom hated Grater and went ballistic. Come on Stangler join in the fun and give us some Andy D stories. Tony D. don't be spending all that disney stock. You should throw a few crumbs to the ex-mayor of 57 building. Another all time wacko has to be that Jack Sharp. Those of you on night work will surely remember the night he got in the tussle with "The Rat" outside the west gate at that food stand (What was that place called?) Sharp had been trying to get Grater to start something for a while but he wouldn't bite. After Jack brought some coffee he purposely bumped into grater spilling some coffee on himself. He freaked on the rodent saying that grater had burned him, started wrestling with him and pushed him through a plate glass window. He then grabbed his wrist and raked it over the jagged glass. Sharp came into work laughing, while grater went to the hospital. He eventually needed surgery and had nerve damage in that hand. This list could go on forever.
Terry I have to agree with your ralph Trimpey nomination, he was one wacked individual. Mike decimo could vouch for that.

Dear Philly YardBird,
It would be great if a few former Navy Yard people were there! I wish some sort of museum were set up so that people could appreciate all the work that the yard accomplished.

We (U. of Penn Press) are publishing a history of the Navy Yard next year. I will keep you posted.

Yo Paz, Jerry Maietti, Buddy LeSage, Ray Stonelake, it's great to here from you guys. Jerry, how's the water ice business? Joe Cloud, I know how you feel about working on holidays. I will be off on Thanksgiving, but I do have to work on Christmas day and New Years day. But I won't mind because I will be making about 60 bucks an hour. Easy Money. I would like to nominate my all millenium wacos. From 11 shop I would have to say Trash Mouth McLaren would be my top pick. Stan the Man and The Goose would be the top two runners up. As for 26 shop I would pick Joe Mother F#%*er. Ralph Trimpey and Paul Lidel would be runners up. Since it's Hallowine time does anyone from 31 shop remember when they had a ghoul pool going in bldg 18? Please shed some light on this. Looking foward to seeing everyone at the Lagoon on Dec.5th Terry

Dear Philly Yardbird,
I wanted to let you and any other former navy yard employees know that I will be giving an illustrated talk at the Independence Seaport Museum (Penn's Landing, 211 South Columbus Blvd) on Thursday, November 11, at 6:00pm about destroyer escorts and their role in the U.S. Navy. The Naval Institute Press has recently published my book, "The Buckley-Class Destroyer Escorts." Buckley DEs and the other classes of DE were built during WWII for convoy escort and ended up serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars as well. Many of these ships were built and serviced at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and I will show several slides of ships at the yard. The talk is free and open to the public, so I thought I would pass this along in case you and anyone else were interested.

Yours sincerely,

Bruce H. Franklin

As the millenium is upon us I would like to nominate my All-millenium Shipfitter/Welder service team. My #1 team is : Stan "The Man" Arshan and JJ "Pugsley" Hughes. If they had let those two work together the yard would still be open. My All-millenium "Wackos" are: Shop 11 would have to be Dan "The earplug monster" Perkins. Just the sight of him going wild eyed and trying to choke Mike decimo in 57 building one day puts him tops on my list. Shop 26 there are oh so many. My nomination is Harvey "The knockout" Schultz. Now I know Harvey isn't actually crazy, but he is my pick for two reasons. One would be his infamous "raid" in the 620 locker room for which he earned his "Knockout" nickname. His subsequent mass employee lineup onboard the "Saratoga" hangerbay (it was the Sara right???)
Then 6 to 7 months later him coming into the "head" and wanting to fight Wade from 11 shop because he made a comment about the above incident. At this point he had literally lost his mind (I think he eventually found it. Didn't he???) and earns my nomination. I am sure there are many more people that have their own nominations. so let's hear them. (Mike Pellegrino could be nominated for his temporary insanity when he cut the burning lines off the manifolds on the flight deck of one of the carriers. Mike had some great sh#thouse lawyers that got him off on that one)
By the way I saw Teddy Singleton of shop 11 working at the First Union Center, at the box office. He looks and is doing great. He said he saw Armon of 11 shop, and Armon is supposedly a big boss down the shipyard. I don't know who he works for, but he tried to get teddy to come work for him. Ted laughed at him, and said he was enjoying the good life.

Healthcare industry defies explanation. While some hospitals are experiencing layoffs, they continue to hire out agency nurses because they (hospitals) are short staffed. My hospital is laying off some workers, but I am not effected. The point is while these layoffs take effect the hourly wage for agency nurses is outrageous. (Workers are laid off but others are brought in to take their place at a higher rate.) the only difference is these agency nurses do not require benefits. I am working on Thanksgiving night for a guaranteed 12 hour shift at the rate of ready........$60 per hours. For working stiffs like us this is obscene. This is the craziness that the insurance companies have made. Tony D. for all those times you told me that I better stop studying and get to work.........I'm glad I didn't listen to you. SUBJ: More On My Visit to The Yard the Other Day

I got so caught up in telling my story the other day, that I referred to a "DD 6" For those of you who are curious, no . . they did not add a drydock. However, some of the potholes around drydocks 4 & 5 sure resemble a drydock!

Incidentally, the Navy is trying to remove the Ammunition Oilers that are homeported here at Naval Weapons Station Earle, and relocate them at Nofolk. This would adversely affect the ex-Yardbirds working for Metro machine since the overhaul work that Metro is scheduled to perform would move to Virginia too. The local politicians (as always) are involved. Call or write yours if you can. I'm writing mine!

Hey
Everyone,

Just a quick note to report that I was down the 'yard yesterday. As I previously reported, I work for the Public Works ZCenter Philadelphia. I'm based at the Earle Site in New Jersey. Anyway, I was there for a meeting, and drove around the place at lunch. I tried the Kaverner gate, and the guard waved me in.

The roads within the Kaverner complex have potholes big enough to swallow a bus. The area between DD 5 & 6 looks like it was bombed. Bldg. 620 has many large gaping holes in it. But, the faded "PNSY" logos are still showing throughout the building. The scene could only be describes as surreal.

As always, thanks for everything Julio. And, all you other 'yardbirds, please keep the memories coming!

Greetings ex-yardbirds! Thank you to the creators of this website!
I became an ex-yardbird sooner than most of you, but between 1972 and 1985, I made my small mark on the pages of PNSY's history. It would be nice to hear from old friends and former apprentice classmates. How and what are you doing? I worked in the "IRO" from 72 to 78; in 26 shop Feb 1978 until November 1995 and left PSNSY in 1985 to accept a job in California. I worked at a second Navy installation until that base closed in 1996. I fortunately am still a federal employee. I investigate retaliation against whistleblowers and other alleged prohibited personnel practices. Does anybody remember me? I hope so!

It's great to see that even after the yard is closed, that there is a bond between shipyard workers that no one else could understand, how we got along and respected each other as skilled workers. I spent 18 years down the yard and never regreted any of them or the people that i worked with, unlike the jobs on the outside. I work for the local school system as a vehicle mechanic making a fair wage and great bennies. There are only three of us and one is also an ex-shipyard worker,38 shop Nick Buccieri. At least we can relive some of the good times we had at the yard, in conversation. We both said as good as we have it here we both would leave here tomorrow if the yard opened up again.
Signed: never sorry,never regreted

Hi Yardbirds:

I did some time at the shipyard during my 9 1/2 year naval career.

The most memorabale was training Iranians to steam destroyers in the early 70's and the Decommissioning of the Allen M Sumner DD692 in 1973. There is some info at the web site www.dd-692.com

Also check out my page www.angelfire.com/wv/normostroydd692

It was easy to be in Philly. My mouth still waters for a delicious sandwich from BlindMan's.

Thanks to all of you for your service to our country.

Just a note to tell everyone the new Navy Federal Credit Union office has officially opened in Cherry Hill. Today was the grand opening day. If going, take Rt 295 to Exit 32 (Haddonfield/Berlin), and go towards Haddonfield (if going north, it will be a left turn/if going south it will be a right turn). Go to Brace Road (Winner Ford will be on your left). A short distance you will see an entrance to a small shopping plaza. Looking at the Super G, it will be the store to the immediate left. According to the papers, the credit union office at the shipyard will remain open! Maybe we'll run into each other there.

Dear Friends and family...

I want to express my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of John Meyer and share some thoughts with you.
When I was 19 years old, and just "that 31 shop girl who was always in "big" trouble", John was my hero. To me then, he was a genius Union Steward with a hearty laugh and a stern way. He did his best to protect my rights no matter what the crime of the day was.... and if nothing else, we had a great laugh trying! Even recently,(thanks to this web page) we were able to keep in touch and laugh and share past and post shipyard dilemmas on occasion. To me now, he is an old friend, a good man. I will always be greatful for that. I will miss him. Truly.

John Meyer was a guy who really gave a damn about the working man. As a Union Steward, John was a fearless advocate. He never hesitated to say what needed to be said. He pulled no punches. I wish that I could say more, but frankly I'm at a loss for words (yeah, I know how hard that is to believe). I'm stunned at his passing since he seemed to be so full of life when I spoke to him several months ago. In typical John fashion, he saw my e-mail address on this list and wrote. We ended up having a midnite conversation about the "glory days." He was as sharp as ever. I'm glad to have had the chance to speak to him "one last time." May perpetual light shine upon him!

Hello, my name is Greg Rigatti and I am a student at the University of Virginia. I am doing a report on the impact of and reaction to World War II on Philadelphia. I was wondering if you would happen to know where I can find information on the employment numbers, projects, and or contracts that the shipyard had in 1935-1940. If you would happen to know of any reference material I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass it on to me. My report is do in a few days, so I would appreciate any help you could give me.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this.

You might want to try writing to:

National Personnel Records Center
(Civilian Personnel Records)
111 Winnebago Street
St. Louis, MO 63118

This is were personnel records are sent. I don't know if they would have records from the 40's, but it's worth a try. You should sent them the names, SSN, and dates they were employed by the Yard.

Hi Yardbirds,

My mother and father both worked at the Philly Navy Yard in the early 40's. Would any of you out there know of any way I might be able to obtain any records? My parents weren't married at that time yet. Their names were Betty Izes and Harry Zuckerman. I would really appreciate anything anyone could tell me. I have a ring my mom made on a lathe at the navy yard. It is very special to me.

Thanks alot

sorry to have to post this, but Jown W. Meyer, passed away on Saturday September 5, 1999. John had been living in Rutland Vermont for the past couple of years. He was a true friend to the working man and was responsible for much of the good that came out of the MTC. He taught me and many others wath it meant to be an advocate. As a machinist, John was in a class all his own, (one of his many observations was: "I work in tolerances of 1/1000 of an inch, do you have any idea how many 1/1000's are in an inch? It must be at least a million." John would not want people to mourn his passing, but I for one lost a true friend on Saturday. John: "I'll see you when I am better dressed."

Peace

Hi All!

Get to see some folks, Gardy in Wildwood, Murphy at the Brooklawn diner. Sad to report the passing of Harry Shea about a year ago.
For those curious about the New Jersey Location of the NFCU, it's supposed to be in the Super G shopping plaza off Brace Road. Easiest way to get there will be 295 North to Exit 32 (Haddonfield-Berlin Road). Go west toward haddonfield, you will have a Texaco on your right, Winner Ford will be on your left. At the light, make a right turn, up a short distance and you will see the entrance to the shopping plaza. Brace Road also comes off Route 70 at what used to be the Old Ellisburg Circle.

I am especially interested in the economic impact this had on the local community. Also I would like some information on the actaul overhaul and the attitude of the yard employees towards the last naval ship to be overhauled at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

I sure would appreciate any help you can give me on this.

just a word of advice...i don't think anyone from X26 should be recommending laying off the sauce. I think it is safe to say there were more drinkers in 26 shop than all the other shops combined. I remember plenty of welders coming in at 0730 still half tuned-up from the nite before and it was a bad idea to give them a cutting torch because of all the alcohol fumes!! Don't get me wrong, i have no problem with drinking. As a matter of fact, i just cracked open my third can of Bud. All i'm saying is i wish to exercise my constitutional right to drink...even if i'm on the internet! By the way, what ever became of Larry Friend?

For those of you who don't know...

I heard the Credit Union is moving to New Jersey. That is why they allowed it (the Philly location) to fall into a state of disrepair (at least I heard it was looking bad). I don't remember exactly where in New Jersey its going, however, I know there is some kind of a pseudo-office on Packer Street in South Philadelphia too. If anyone wants more info on available NFCU offices, or you want to bank online etc. - go to WWW.NAVYFCU.ORG. You'll find all the info you can handle. For extremely difficult questions, send them to me, and I can forward them to my wife who works in the Monterey California Branch office and can get the real skinny on most new information.

He can still B.S. with the best of them. I ran into Johnny Mangericina at F.D.R. park golf course in South Philly. He is doing very well working at a oil refinery in Marcus Hook, Pa. I forgot the name. He is working with Chuck Catone in the maintenance dept. I also met Bill "Mac" McDevitt aka "The Sidewinder" at the Shop Rite in Williamstown. He bent my ear for an hour. He just turned 82 years old and is still going strong. He loved telling me how he used to tell all the foreman and G.F.'s in 11 shop to go F*%$ themselves especially Kevin Grasso or as he called him Kevin Asso. He still keeps in touch with the Goose. He is still kicking in Clayton N.J. and his wife is still giving him hell. I'm still working at Drexil Univ. in Philly on the third shift. Hey Jaybird, how's Freeballs doing? Is he still working with you at the yard? Tell him that I said hello.

Hello everybody !!! Well, I needed 48 days to retire at Letterkenny Army Depot but with all the wheeling and dealing there I did'nt get that but jumped ship anyhow on PPP for Tobyhanna Army Depot that's not under BRAC or anything else in fact they are hiring so all you ex-yardbirds listen up put in an application it's the best thing you'll ever do. Seems they have a HUGE workload from Sacremento Army Depot which closed for maintenance of trailers and shelters for communication & electronic equipment and it involves 50% TDY both in CONUS & OCONUS. If anybody wants info please email me and I'd be happy to oblige. The hell with Kaverner who works better than the DoD anyhow...think of it...use or lose, sick days inhouse annual & etc. They need sheetmetal people too, and maybe a FEW good welders. So here's your golden opportunity the area is growing and my family should be apart of it. Yes, winters are harsh in the Poconos, but the work beats all.....

I was sorry to here from Jim Merkins about the death of Jimmy Hammond. He really was a gentle man. Whenever I see a death notice about "one of us" it makes me reflect on the fraternity we had at the yard. At the time, we all bitched and gripped about everything, but I don't think we realized what a special bond we all had for each other.
The shared experiences and memories of PNSY constitute a brotherhood that we all belong to.

Hi all -
I'm not an ex-yard bird, but have spent lots of time there as my dad, Floyd B. Kelley, Sr. was in the Navy for 20 years then worked in 72 shop for 24 years. He recently passed on, but is still remembered.
One reason I write is to let people know about my dad passing and another is the fact that he, like many of you, suffered from disease related to asbestos. I am now a lawyer and I specialize in cases involving asbestos.
If I could ever assist anyone for what has been done to you or if I can answer any questions about asbestos, legal or medical, or just to shoot the breeze about my dad, etc., then please feel free to call me at (609) 616-2226 or e-mail me. Thanks for your time.

I just wanted to let everyone know not to listen to any of Paul Lidel's bullshit about how much money he makes and that he is climbing the corporate ladder. He is a level 4 mail processor in Mt. Holley and their base salary is 37,500 max so don't believe the 70,000 shit or the shit about wearing a shirt and tie he is still a loser like he was at the yard.

I noticed in a previous message that the sender's e-mail address was "Den69125". I wondered if the 5 digit number was his old check number because when I read it, I immediately thought of my old check number - 59131. Isn't it funny how that thing stays etched in your mind?

To give you some perspective on the time line since the numbers were sequential, my check number was issued in June of 1974.
