I started as an apprentice boilermaker in 1978 right out of High School. As Lee Jones said it was absolute "Culture Shock". But what an experience growing up in the Shipyard. Having the likes of Jackie May, Eddie Jones, Wallsy Sr., Pat Gallager, Frank Jenis, and an array of characters teach you all the right and the wrongs, from the tools to drinking beer in the firebox. Lets hear from the dynasty of a softball team 41 shop had for 4 years during the early 80's. Mando, Pancho, Big Dick, Coach Conti. They were great years and a lot of memories. I'm looking forward to hearing from some of the guys to find out what you're up to.

I started at the Shipyard in July of 70' as an Apprentice Boilermaker. I could not imagine a greater culture shock coming right out of High School and into a steam drum! During the ten years that I spent in 41 Shop, I met some of the most unusual characters, and to this day I'll never forget. I would to hear from any Boilermaker's who were in 41 Shop from 1970 to 1980.

Thanks

I'm hoping that you can help. I'm trying to locate old logo from the naval base at Philly.

I retired from the navy as a master chief after 26 years of service. I'm now trying to put together a web page of my navy career. I've been trying to get a hold of the logo from Boilerman school in Philly and a copy of the Navy boiler testing laboratories (NBTL) logo. If you or any of your contacts can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I attended "B" school on Philly and had a chance to use NBTL several times. was on Dewey when decommissioned for overhaul 1969. had some dealings with slep conversion for USS Constellation.

Any help appreciated.

Hey, do any of you 99 shop guys remember Buddy Bradwell? He was a pipefitter who worked as a sniffer (gas free engineer tech.) most of the time. He was a nice guy who, it was said, had a button on his ass that rendered him unconscious the moment he sat down. One day he was sitting in a chair, head down, hands folded in his lap when Sye DuBose, his boss, caught him. Sye thought he'd be slick and just stand in front of Buddy 'til he woke up startled. Well, Buddy must have sensed Sye was there so he lifted his head up and , with conviction, said "Amen". Sye had nothing to say.

I had the pleasure of being back on the iron onboard USS Geo Washington(CVN-73) 2 wks ago.A group of approx 45 older folks were on a bus tour in Norfolk and this was to be the highlight of the tour.Since I used to work on carriers,I was a sort of unofficial guide in addition to the one provided by the ship.Everyone was impressed by the size and condition of the ship and I answered a great many questions but was stumped by only one!We were in an avionics repair shop on the 01level were there 4 pipefitters brazing one 1 1/2" Chill Water pipe and these people wanted to know what the other 3 were doing since there was only one torch being used.I don't know if they were yardbirds or contractors but I do know it was an OT saturday.SOME THINGS WILL NEVER CHANGE !!!! Sorry, to hear of the passing of a great man Herbie the Welder. He worked with me on a project on the LEX up on the foc'sle we were putting in frames for airconditioning boundaries and I had to get a ladder for him to weld the top of them. Got the ladder and set it up for him while he strung his lines I asked if he wanted me to help but he said no. He came out with his one liners, which took about a half hour. I said Herbie we got to get to work now he said OK and got up the ladder struck an arc, got back down the ladder and said 'Boy we are moving now" went up the ladder made another tack, and lifted his helmet and said the Zoo one...I often seen him in the Acme in the Black Horse Shopping Center he was with his wife and boy was she huge little Herbie and big Momma...he had an old junky station wagon, and we always talked about the 'yard. Another soul lost rest in peace old friend...

Little Herbie was a gem. The first time I met him was on the U.S.S. Paul. Herbie was assigned to stay outside the hole and hand me in anything I needed, since I was in an extremely tight spot. I was a first year apprentice and could barely keep the arc lit, yet here was Herbie asking me how I was doing every two minutes. After four hours of putting up slop and constantly sticking the rods Herbie asked one more time "hey Mike, is everything alright?" I turned and screamed "Jesus Christ I'm fucking fine! I'll never forget the expression on his face.

My favorite Herbie one liner--I'm a Robert Hall welder, no overhead.

Rest in peace Herbie

YO Yardbirds. What's up? T.D. sorry to hear about "Little Herbie" he was a pretty alright dude. I remember Herbie working on the Biddle, he only stood about 5'2" but that never stopped him from doing his job. He would be carrying three sections of burning line to his job and never wanted any help. The burning line probably weighed more than him.
Some of his Famous one-liners I remember:
I called the zoo the other day, and all the lions were busy.
I had a "Honeymoon Sandwich" hold the dressing and lettuce alone.
The price of bread must be going up. I went past the store and the sign said "Raison Bread" today.

Good move Julio not putting up anonymous posts. If people have the guts to send things to you then they should GROWUP and be willing to put their names to the words. Some people think they can hide behind a computer screen, but Mr. Casiano is saying that isn't going to happen anymore.

This is to the brilliant 56 Shop "worker" who was too gutless to sign his name to his post. Hey Einstien how much thought process did it take to write that little note. It made no sense at all. Let's see: "I'm really tired of all this BS." What the heck are you talking about??? Any specific BS in particular???? Another gem: "All you welders are doing the same thing you did at the yard NOTHING!!!!!" I'm sorry isn't this particular website that you are reading and writing on run by Julio "The 26 Shop Welding Instructor" Casiano. I know me and all other welders did nothing at the yard, but how do you know we aren't doing something meaningful now like selling pretzels? Are you watching all of us day and night? If you are how come you don't know where everyone else is? (Don't you remember that gem "Where is everyone else?") As far as the very sympathetic Kaverner comment!
I'll bet a lot of the guys applying to Kaverner probably belonged to the Union at the shipyard, and look where it got them. As far as me and most of the welders I talk to, well we are all starving. However, it is nice to see that the union finds work for mentally challenged individuals like yourself. Do everyone a favor. The next time you want to post something sit down and think about what you are going to write. Then make sure that it makes sense before you post it. We may not hear from you for a few months, but that's OK. Then make sure you ask your spouse if it is OK to use your name on the Internet. (Be careful there are people online who will take advantage of stupid people like yourself.) By signing your name everyone will know who they are laughing at when they read your post. They'll say, "Hey there goes another moronic post from So and So the mentally challenged super union 56 shop idiot. By the way your stupid post made my day. Thanks
To the rest of you starving shipyard workers....have a good one.

In Sunday's Harrisburg Paper there was an article from the AP Wire that the City and the Navy finally settled on a deal over the sale of the land. This paves the way for the city to offer long term leases needed by buisnesses that want to begin major construction or claim tax credits. It's about time the Navy stopped farting around. The city would pay $2mil for 1,100 acres, and Navy keeps 130 acres. The city will get the water/sewer/electric, and will contract to third parties. Kvaerner is particularly happy now they can go ahead with thier investments. Navy copped a plea saying it took time (yeah right) because of the complexities.... So little good news...

WASHINGTON -- Agreements signed this week by the United States Navy and the City of Philadelphia have cleared the way for the city to develop the huge shipyard that was shut down four years ago in a round of military base closings.

The city can now begin to market the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as a commercial site, an endeavor that is expected to result in up to 3,000 new jobs.

The first major business interested in the shipyard, Kvaener ASA of Norway, the largest shipbuilding company in Europe, agreed more than a year ago to build there but needed title to its site by April 2000 to proceed. The agreements, in effect, pass ownership of the shipyard to the city, allowing it to sign contracts with individual buyers and tenants.

Kvaener, which is planning to lease 115 acres for about $345,000 a year for 99 years, could create 1,000 jobs or more.

"This is a very important milestone in a difficult process," said Julie K. Van Nostern, director of Philadelphia's Office of Defense Conversion, an arm of the city's industrial development agency. "For economic development, it's very significant."

Opened in 1801, the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard operated as one of the country's largest shipbuilding sites until it was included among 26 military bases in 1991 recommended to be closed in the aftermath of the cold war. Over the years, more than 100 ships were built there, and thousands were repaired.

In the peak years, from World War II through the mid-1980's, as many as 12,000 people worked at the shipyard, but when it closed, in September 1995, the work force was down to 1,600. The aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy was the last naval craft to be overhauled there.

Once the shipyard closed, city and state officials began planning a development strategy, leading to a $429 million commitment by the city, state and Federal governments to upgrade the site and offer job training programs.

City officials negotiated with the Navy to obtain the rights to the property, and on Wednesday officials signed three contracts that passed control of 1,100 acres to the city for $2 million. The Navy is retaining 130 acres for its own use.

The agreements allow the city to sign long-term deals with tenants, some of whom will require major construction projects to accommodate their businesses. Ms. Van Nostern said that before the city's deal with the Navy was completed, some prospective tenants had been reluctant to sign leases with no guarantees that the Navy would allow them to remain beyond a few years.

The site has two major components, the former shipbuilding yard, which Kvaener will occupy, and a former naval station, which officials hope to market as a gated, mixed-use site for commercial and light industrial businesses.

Major selling points, they said, are the property's location, a suburban setting about halfway between downtown and Philadelphia International Airport, and a light-rail line that runs onto the site.

Dee Kaplan, director of Mayor Edward G. Rendell's Business Action Team, said the city's agreement with the Navy "gives us more freedom and flexibility to deal with companies who want to buy or lease" at the former naval yard.

"A lot of companies have expressed interest," Ms. Kaplan said. "We also have a lot of existing companies in the area who love the ambiance of the place."

In response to Neen Raspa's 4/1 message, I heard on KYW 1060 radio also last week that Santo was not hurt seriously, but his wife did have to have stitches to her hand. For anyone that remembers Santo, the coffeeman from the Ballroom in Building 83, 8th floor, he was, and is still is a kind and loving man who always goes out of his way to help someone else. Rich and I just received a Christmas card from him this past season. I believe that the hearing for the local kis who broke into their house started last week, but the actual incident happened in January or February. Keep Santo and his wife in your prayers.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Kvaerner is planning to (or already has) torn up the old inclined building ways. Does anybody know? Also, if anyone can help me find an old riveter used at the yard I would appreciate it! (I mean a rivet gun, not an old rivet guy, although I would love to hear the experiences of anyone who put together ships with rivets at PNSY!) Thanks!

Hey yardbirds! I started at the yard in Jan. 1967 on subs in the back channel. I stayed in 64 shop my entire undistinguished career ( no ambition to get ahead), until retiring in 95. I'll never forget all the people from the differrent shops and the great times I had. I see a lot of yardbirds around and even though I might not know their names I remember their faces.
Today was the first time I've seen this sight and really enjoy it. Yard birds are a special breed and the Yard a special place.
Hope to hear from some of you guys.

LA
In 1990 someone did call me a disgrace at the shipyard. You are also correct that I went to see "Uncle" Ike about this so called problem. I was told however that he wouldn't be entertaining guests for quite a while, because it was going to take him a long while to review your light duty files. I said, "Thanks but I the shipyard closes in 1995, I don't think I'll wait around." Now what was that nickname????
Slight Fruity Larry...no. Night Booty Larry....no. Light Duty Larry...um......now that has a familiar ring to it!

Terry that was a typical "Babe" Fillion story. I can hear him apologizing a million times. As far as "Fathead", you were lucky to be sitting in the back seat. A tractor trailer could hit you head on and would never make it to the back seat due to that head. You guys would survive the truck would be destroyed. Just Imagine if Harry Ivins was riding shotgun. With those two heads nothing could harm you.

This is great. With all the BB going I can hear the 7:30 muster whistle blowing.

I also have a sighting. Was out to breakfast and saw Rocky Mandolla of 26 shop. If you knew Rocky you remember that he had an almost fatal car accident about a year before the yard closed. Glad to report that he looks great. He said he gets a nice disability from VA. He said to ask Roy McFall if he is wearing those ten gallon cowboy hats and boots out there in Texas. Hey Roy do you remember the MASH hangout that Mark Stellato set up on nights during the Indy. Gerry "The Brain" Townsell was constantly trying to find it but never could. Where is Townsell these days. The way he used to talk I thought he would be a doctor by now. What a laugh (at him, not with him) he was.
What ever happened to Terry "The Black Angus" Butler????
Tony D. Where is your trip to?????
Remember keep laughing....except you LA you might hurt youself (there goes another 45 days for Ike to review).

Joe Cloud,
Great stuff. Keep it up. Reading that brings back memories. Ballbusting went on everyday at the yard. I remember once at muster in D.D.#5 someone was getting their balls busted and didn't like it. The whole gang, about 20 guys, surrounded him holding up their hands as if they were warming up to a fire. The more it bothered you the worst you got it. To borrow a phrase from Tom "The Turtle" Terifay, "a little gas on the fire never hurt anybody".
Tony Bell and Steve Fillion are two names I haven't heard in a while.I was on TDY to Norfolk with those two. One Friday we were coming home for the weekend driving north on Rt. 13. We were in a Caprice Classic. The back seat was as big as a couch. Tony Bell was driving, me and Fillion were in the back seat. I look over at Fillion and he keeps inching over toward me getting closer and closer. Finally I said "what's your problem, get the hell away from me". He said he was sorry ,he was just trying to see out the front window. He couldn't see anything past Bell's big f------g head.
Tony D., good luck on your trip. Did you get any free maps or discount coupons?

Terry

In other words, I screen what gets displayed here. I also don't normally post anonymous postings either, but I let the one that 'broke balls' on Joe Cloud get on because Breakin' Balls was as much a Shipyard Culture as 'Nicknames'.

Maybe if you worked on 'The Other Side of the Yard' you may interpret this exchange to be derogatory, but on the other side of the CIA gate, it was just Breakin' Balls! It happened everyday. Nobody got offended by it. It was just a form of entertainment that distracted you from the 'Same Shit, Different Day' routine we had to endure just to support our families.

EMail = I wish you guys would come out of the closet and sign your names. To the mystery writer that said 26 shop was still at each others' throats you are right. However, that is what made the shipyard great. The ball breaking went on 24 hrs a day at the yard, and everyone did it. Some better than others, but everyone did it. If you weren't getting your balls broke than people didn't like you. While others might look at the posts from the last week as "mean spirited", I see it as a way of bringing back some of the old shipyard rhetoric. Hearing the same old "I just wanted to say hi to the old gang." is fine but there has to be a flip side to that. Jaybird the comments about the crane and Armand made me laugh outloud. I can see him pulling the crane out of the yard with that big wheeled truck of his. Also, people should start posting some of the funniest work/non-work related stories from their times there. One fast story:
I was working nights out on the Indy. I don't know how many of you remember Dave phillips, but he was a big muscle bound nethanderal who was a welder. Dave used to come in to work in his sleeveless t-shirts and we used to bust on him saying, "Who are you trying to impress here the firewatched." He would reply, "Yeah I'm gay." Well one of the firewatches came up to me and asked if Dave really had a boat (which he did). I said yeah why. The guy said, "Dave told us if we wanted to out on the river he'd take us." Now phillips was totally heterosexual but I tell this squid, "Well...er...I guess it's safe???" The kid says, "What do you mean????" I reply, "I...eh....shouldn't say anything since the charges were dropped." Kid says "WHAT CHARGES." I say, "Dave took a sailer out on the Saratoga got him a little drunk and took advantage of him, but these charges were dropped." He says, "You mean he's gay????" I say, "Look at the muscles tight t-shirts. What girls are around here for him to show off for. You figure it out." All that week the talk is with these few firewatch that Phillips is a switch hitter. Dave says, "These squids are acting weird lately. I ask them something and it's like they look at me funny." Pete Kobryn says"it is because they think you are the night work version of Bong" We proceeded to tell him the whole story. Of course he vowed his revenge on me, but that is a tale for another story. Besides my wife is kicking my backside because we are going out. As Jim Bob or Mike Miller would say, "I'll tell you what M@#therF#@$er."
Keep smiling boys. Nurse (Am still a disgrace???) Joe

Wow!!!!!! That is what I like to hear some ballsie talk from someone at this site. Unfortunately, you didn't sign your name, so you must have left your balls in another room. However, it's a start and I am sure you will overcome your timidness soon. TD this sounds alot like the rhetoric you used to say at our musters. That, "How can you look yourself in the eye in front of the mirror." was a favorite quote you must have used a hundred times. Sure I studied on company time, but at least I put my down time to constructive use. I wasn't sitting around all day doing crossword puzzles, playing pinochle, going to the bowling alley, or "shooting the gap". How about all the bosses using the computers for "research projects". As much as I studied in work I did three times more at home. People like you were jealous because while I had a defined plan that I stuck to, your life was defined by your role at the shipyard. Without that role you wouldn't know what to do. So there you have it some more ballsie talk at the shipyard site. The only difference is this time someone is signing their name.

I am currently employed with th Navy public works center as a carpenter. I just want to say I miss all of the people I worked with at the shipyard.

Nurse Joe,
That's a helluva story you wrote. You must have got quite an education on behalf of Uncle Sam. All that studying and doing homework while you were on the clock really paid off! You stuck it up your boss's ass so bad he had to shit in a bathtub! How can you look yourself in the eye in front of a mirror. You should write a book called "How to commit rape and murder and get away with it" or "Why should I work, they're closing the yard". You and your buddies in metal spray are a discrace to all the people who kept plugging away, even though the yard was closing, and finished the overhaul of the Kennedy.

To any yardbirds,
There is an informal invitation to get together at Wayne's Log Cabin on Route 130 in Brooklawn, N.J. On Saturday night March 20,1999. The accappella singing group "Remember When" is performing there that night at 09:00. One of the lead singers is Vito DeServio ( formerly of the tank & void trailer). They perform oldies and there is also a DJ and dancing. No cover and cash bar. So if you would like to reminisce about the shipyard with friends, send them an e-mail to meet there.

I just wanted to notify you that ex-yardbird Don Holmes (11 shop/P&E?) passed away last night in his sleep. He was 44. Don left the yard and accepted a position with PERA. In 96 he moved with PERA (when PERA merged into Supship Portsmouth) to the Norfolk Va area. Ironically, he passed while on a ship check in Philly. I don't have anymore details on whether services will be in Philly. Keep your eye on the philly papers for info. When I hear anymore I'll let you know.

nurse joe, how many times have i told you not to repeat those stories. there're a lot of jealous people out there. they had to work for a living while we listened to stern in the morning. if we did have a job to spray on the boats we would tape and listen to it in the afternoon. and uncle mike would reward us with cash for saving the shipyard money. what a joke!!!
then when we had nothing to do at all we just sat and read the paper. but when the stuff hit the fan , you opened study hall to all those that were interested.and i might add you took advantage of a good thing . as some might say kudos and more kudos to you .i can go on and on but i have a job and i need to get some sleep. take care.

This is in response to Tony D's question about Rich Cloud. I can just see him as a nurse! Imagine laying in a hospital bed and having Nurse Cloud walk into your room. As i was telling Frank "THE NOB" Forte, Cloud is my welding supervisor at an army base called Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg,Pa. John Gamble is out here as well. We're all here because of PPP. One hell of a group huh? Needless to say, I'm the best welder in that trio. Chambersburg is hideous! Nothin but cows, farmers, hicks and rednecks. The locals out here just love the way Cloud runs the shop(heehee). Also, there were some guys that were pissed because Cloud bumped them out of a chance for the supervisor job. Oh well. Have a wonderful St. Patrick's day.
Sean.
P.S.- speaking of St. Patrick's day, here is a joke for ya-
Q: How many Irish guys does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Four- one to hold the bulb and three others to keep drinking until the room starts spinning.

LA Smith,
I did visit the drydocks once. It was a cold day in January 1991. Uncle Mike Pelligrino had told us plenty of scary stories about this place called drydock 5. He told us never to wander far from Metal Spray, especially out to this cold and dark place called drydock 5. He said if another big, bad, scary general foreman saw us out there he would gobble us up, throw us down there and we would never be seen again. Well we were just too curious and decided to venture out there. We locked up metal spray and decided to drop bread crumbs behind us so we would find our way back. However, that was our lunch so we needed to use something completely useless. So we dropped 8018 welding rods behind us, the golden boys of 57 building didn't weld. As we walked in what we knew to be the general direction of the DD we got lost and stopped to ask this fat big headed gnome like creature for directions. He said, "Yeah the DD is just through those gates. By the way do you want to buy some socks?" Before we could answer this whiney, screechy voice that sent chills down your spine repeated what the fat gnome had said, "Yeah BABE DD right throught those gates BABE. Do you want to buy some socks BABE?" We ran from that voice as fast as we could, because we knew it was Tony Bell selling cheap socks and his whiney assistant Stevie Fillion. Well there were lots of other meetings and close encounters on the way, but I'll save those for another day. Needless to say we reached the Drydock and were horrified at what we saw down there. People were WORKING. I said to one monkey looking creature we met out there, "What time do you guys go to study hall?" He said, "Why would we study." I replied, "Because the shipyard is closing, right?" He said, "No that is just a fairy tale. They will never close this place. By the way I want to be a shop planner when I grow up." That poor monkey looking creature never grew up. He stayed three foot tall forever, but sucked his way into being a shop planner. That big earred creatures name was Jimmy "Turtle's Boy" DeFazio. Me and Decimo left the DD at this point ran back to the safe confine of Metal Spray never to venture out to the DD again. Whew... after telling a scary story like that I don't think I'll sleep tonight. One day I'll tell you guys a nice story about the time I got to stand behind Suzie Kortze during Stretch and Flex in the welding school. That girl sure was flexible. Have a good one. Nurse Joe

The health care industry has gone completley mad, and thanks to Metal Spray and Tony DeLia I am part of the madness. I left my job at Episcopal where I was making in the low $20/hr range, and went to Pennsylvania Hospital where I was making in the $25/hr range. As I worked at Pennsylvania I noticed a lot of what are called agency nurses working there. Agency nurses work for a company that supply nurses to hospitals that are short staffed. Well I found out that almost every hospital in the area is short staffed. I am now working full time for two agencies after finding out that the pay is in the high $30/hr range. One guy worked New Years Day 12 hours and was paid $72/hour. Nusing is a tough gig what with the doctors constantly trying to look up my skirt and admiring my leg (those indian doctors like hairy legs), but for this money I can deal with the sexual harrassment.
One other thing. I was up Big Boulder snow tubing a few weeks back. It was a Saturday night, me and my son were waiting in line to take the lift to the top of the mountain. This guy in front of us looked familiar so I called his name. As he spun around his beak...I mean nose knocked me to the ground. As I slowly got up off the ground it was none other then Benny Kletchek. He is still working for Uncle Sam at the Naval Depot in the Northeast. Danny Ginnion was with him (romance blooming?????) He is working up off of Old Lincoln Highway welding for a private company. He works with Pete Kobryn. Pete injured his hand a while ago but is back to work. While I was talking to Benny I said how funny it was that my wife and friends were all freezing there asses off in the snow storm, but it just felt like another normal day in the dry dock because there wasn't a windchill blowing in off of the river. He said "Yeah old habits die hard." He proceeded to lift his pant legs and there sticking out of his boots were plastic bags. Old Yardbirds using old tricks to keep their feet dry and warm.
Hey Jaybird. What ever happened to that laser job that you guys were supposed to do????? Did they scrap it after we left????
Poor Tucker!!!!!!! Poor Richie!!!!!
Tony D. With all the money I make this year, I am going to have a memorial constructed at Penns Landing for the immortal 57 Bldg crane construction project. I would use the original crane, but jaybird is still airarcing and welding up the last few butts. Hey Jaybird don't forget to make sure everything is ground up all pretty for the inspectors. What did they do with that crane Jay????? Gotta go.
Before I go let me leave you with my cold hearted quote of the week:
Me, Ed Grater, and Tom Sheedy were welding an HY-80 patch in a small compartment on the Independence. There were heaters all around the patch, and we were melting. Ed turned to us and said, "Boy it sure is hot down here." Wherever Ed is these days I bet he is using that quote quite a bit. What do you think????? I know that was cold, but Ed was one coldhearted bastard. Keep laughing guys.
Agency Nurse Joe

They recommend that you don't write your congressman or representative about it. But if you have other comments , you can address them to "www.we-thepeople.com"

The House has a bill set up for a vote ASAP on whether to charge long distance charges for Internet access even if you dial-up locally. This is something that affects each of us. Please read and forward:

Congress will be voting in less than two weeks. CNN stated that the Government would, in two weeks time, decide to allow or not allow a charge to your phone bill equal to a Long Distance call EACH time you access the Internet.

The address is http://www.house.gov/writerep/

If you choose, visit the address above and fill out the necessary form!

Yo Frank Forte, it's great to here from you. Are you still living in Deptford? That's a heck of a gang that you are working with. All you need is Pete the Cop to muster that gang. Is Dave Walker still saying "What up with dat?" and "boooom"? Is Wally Brooks still a O.T. baracuda? Is Otto still a nervous wreck? Tell them all that I said hello.
Speaking of Pete the Cop, I can't believe that L.A.Smith used the word welder in the same sentence with him. Frank "no tanks" Brindisi forgot more than he ever knew about welding. I remember once, before he made became a supervisor, they sent him and another "shop welder" out to D.D.#5 to work O.T. on a Sunday. I forget which carrier it was at the time. When they reported to the foreman, I won't mention his name, he asked Pete if he was qualified in 110-18. Pete said "yes sssssir". The foreman then assigned the both of them a patch to weld. As they walked away Pete asked the other welder "What's 110-18?"
See what I mean.

Terry

I had to go to the shipyard the other day for work. I went to 1000 buliding while on my break. I was suprised to see the rogues gallery" still up on the third floor in the former "Restoration" section. The pictures of a lot of the folks who worked there (me included) were staring down on the empty space. There is so much open space in that building that they actually set up a basketball court on the 2nd floor!

As I drove past the waterfront, I remembered the months I spent on the "Desolute Resolute" (AFDM 9 I believe). I remember my welder back then, a guy named Walt Gordy. He had a bunch of goofy rhymes that he would spout . . . one was "Hail Mary, full of grace . . . thirty chickens in a race . . . " (I forget the rest). He also spoke at length about a guy by the name of "Chicken Bones Jones."

Does anyone know what became of Walt?

Hi all you yardbirds (99shop in particular). I got a couple of Stella stories to tell. One of the stories I told before, but it got sucked down into that Bermuda Triangle of computer data. Since these are Stella stories, I suggest you send your children away from the computer and don't let the faint of heart read the following:
One day around noon I was waiting in line at Stella's lunch wagon at the south end of 620 building when I heard 11-shop-Lou (super-salesman) ask her 'Stella, what's the right way to measure a man's d*ck?' to which Stella replied "From the b*lls out!". And you know, she's right.
Another story I heard (from Adam Woltemate-11 shop) happened at the gedunk in 994 bulding. One of the lunch room customers was giving Stella a hard time because he couldn't find any sugar for his coffee so Stella shouted at him 'Come over here and get down on your knees---I'll give you some Sweet 'n Low!'.
That Stella. Always a crowd pleaser.

To all ex-yardbirds, I just learned that Russ Ball Ret.56 shop foreman, with 30 years at PNSY passed away this past November (98). I was lucky enough to have worked for this man. He truly knew how to build a naval vessel, and how to lead his men. He gave respect and in return he got respect. Russ was in 56 shop THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS!!!!!! I will miss him...................

I'm doing research for a project about my father's WWII experiences. He was in the USMC. In April - June 1942 he was stationed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard studying Basic Military Photography at the Edward Bok Vocational School in Philadelphia.

Can anyone tell me anything about the Bok school? I'm trying to "paint a picture" of his experiences for our family's interest and I'm trying to understand what the Navy Yard was like then (I've never seen it) and maybe to know what the Bok school was all about.

Any help? It would be greatly appreciated.

I dont remember the names but we worked side by side during the cold winter at the bottom of the ship.We had a huge holes in the bottom of the boiler rooms so we could remove and rebrick all 8 boilers. We rigged out most all of the main steam valves and sent them to a shop on the pier for rework. The Forrestall was next to us and a little ways down the Coronado "AGF-11" was in getting ready to leave.
I remember when the Yard birds came down to the hole, I am from Texas and the "Yard Birds" Gave me a hell of a time about my accent and the fact there was no ocean in Dallas.
I have never had a Philly cheese steak and fried mushrooms like the ones "Joe" made on Oregan street downtown.
We were still on shore steam and someone broke a 1/2" hotel drain on a 150psi steam line. boy the yard workers flew out of the hole. The boiler room filled up with steam fast and was so loud. Me and a buddy ran down like salmon swimming upstreeam to secure the leak. We caught hell for not being brave but for being "dumb as hell" I think was the quote.

Your message board has really grown since last year. Good job.
Evidence of a lot of spirit there.

Subject: Alexander Duvinsky

I am an asbestos attorney who represents the estate of the above-named individual. My name is Dennis J. Gruenke, Esquire, of the Law Offices of Peter G. Angelos. My phone is 1-888-271-8900.

Apparently, Mr. Duvinsky was somewhat of a loner and I have had a very difficult time locating someone who worked with him at the shipyard from 1963-1972. Without a witness who can testify that Mr. Duvinsky worked at the shipyard, and naturally around asbestos, I may be unsuccessful in obtaining damages for his family.

Mr. Duvinsky was a design engineer who spent a good portion of his time on the ships. His family and I would appeciate any help that you could afford.

Thank you for your assistance.

Yardbird's were a most inventive species. No matter what the task someone had the answer, no matter what the deal someone knew. Has anyone figured out how much money the Fed has dumped into the yard since we have closed? A 'bird said when we made the list it would be cheaper to give each of us a million dollars and bury the yard then what the government had in mind. Was he right?

January 25, 1999

We would appreciate it if you could find a spot on the Yard website for the enclosed message. I found out about your site through the flyer for the upcoming symposium and am sending the info request to the speakers. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Cheryl Leibold, Archivist

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION:
The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia is trying to find current locations of religious paintings done for navy ships and bases during World War II. The works were commissioned by the Citizens Committee of New York and were designed as portable altarpieces for services in the field, on ships at sea, and in base chapels. They were usually three-part wood or metal panels (the two sides close on hinges covering the central section) and frequently depicted a Madonna figure.

Violet Oakley, a Philadelphia artist, painted over twenty such altarpieces. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts owns one example, and dozens of preliminary sketches for the others. We hope to publish this little known aspect of American art history, as well as distribute the sketches to the current owners of works.

List of known destinations of completed altarpieces:

Philadelphia Navy Yard, presented by Mary Lemoine Harrison
52nd St. Naval Station, New York City
USS Piedmont
USS Langley
USS Pennsylvania
USS Nashville
Bethseda Naval Hospital, presented by the Colonial Dames
Naval Training Station, Sampson, NY, in memory of Lewis Cass Ledyard, Jr.

Sources already consulted: Curator of the Navy, National Archives, National Museum of American Art, National Gallery

Information about these altarpieces is appreciated.

I am currently working for PWC at norfolk naval base, in the crane and rigging shop. I left PNSY in June of 1992 for NNSY and stayed there for 2 years and had receieved a Rift Notice. While on the stopper list I was picked up by PWC in May of 1994. Now they are talking about getting rid of areas in PWC, the CA study was completed in Jan 1999 and we are waiting for the results. I am living in virginia beach, 1 mile from the beach, and love it down here. The rigging shop is not the same as it was in Philly but, we all know that it would be hard to find A better bunch of guys to work with!! When I was at NNSY it was awlful working there because most of the people did not want to work, because some didn't know how to rig and some of them were afraid of rigging. At PWC it is great I just work all of the mobile and floating cranes and do no more shipboard rigging. It is a beautiful area I live in at virginia beach and I will never come back home for employment. I only stop up once or twice a year to visit family and can't wait to get back. I hope everybody from PNSY is doing ok and were sucessful in finding employment. Take care and miss everyone.

I regret to inform ex-PNSY personnel that my father, Floyd B. Kelley, Sr. (72 General Foreman Rigger/Diver) passed away on 22 December, 1998. He began work in at PNSY in 1960 after retiring from the Navy as a Boatswain's Mate Chief (BMC), Deep Sea Diver, and combat war veteran. He worked in 72 shop as a Rigger and Diver. He retired from the yard in 1983 after 22 years. He had many fond memories of his days at PNSY, mostly because of the people he met and worked with. He died after a year long fight against cancer and was buried with military honors, in the Philadelphia Area.

One of many such testimonials that will probably be posted here: Ed Dever, former Zone 1 President of FMA, was one of my mentors and was instrumental in my active involvement in FMA. We worked together on a countless number of FMA projects, from our times together in Chapter 4, setting up picnics and dinners, right up to the recent FMA Zone 2 Conference held this month in Fredericksburg, VA. He has been a tremendous influence on me and I will miss him terribly. During this most joyous Christmas season, please keep Ed, his wife Mary, and his daughter Mary Ann in your prayers.

Sharing a story....In 1974, I started working at the Yard as a Summer Aide.(You can't get much lower than that!) I was 16 and worked for Tony Barbone and Jim Valentine in the Apprentice School, Bldg 650. One day, Tony asks me to deliver some mail to Bldg. 57. He said that since Bldg 57 was in the Industrial Area, I needed to wear a hard hat. So, not having one of my own, I went in the Instructors Room and borrowed one. Since I didn't know any better at the time, I grabbed a white hat with a black stripe down the middle. What was it about that hat that made all the Yardbirds I approached get up and act busy?

Here's another story...For those of us who ate lunch at George's (Bob's) at the main gate...Did you ever get charged the same amount twice in a row for the same food? Happy Holidays all!

Dear Sirs,
My name is Scott Beebe and my grandfather (Dennis Penders) worked in the navy yard most of his life. He retired about 1962. I know he was a machinist boss but other than that not much more. I also know that he was involved in much more. He frequently took trips to Nevada during WWII and throughout the 50s. I dont know that he was involved with the manhattan project but he did (before his death, of lung cancer) have pictures of nuclear or atom bomb tests. After his death my grandmother (who never asked questions) looked for the pictures and other information he kept in a bottom draw and everything was gone. I dont know that what he worked on was classified. But I was curious if and of your older yardbirds may know of him or what projects he may have worked on. Your help is greatly appriciated.

Thank you

I'm not a former yardbird but am interested in the history of the shipyard. I am working on historic documentation of the portion of the yard where Kvaerner is building their shipyard. I'd like to hear from people who worked in buildings 94, 95, 541, and 620, as well as people who worked at Dry Docks 4 and 5. We are particularly interested in what each of the buildings was used for and how that use changed over time.

I may be reached at the e-mail address above or at my office: (215) 561-7637.

Good news folks!

Thanks to Nick Trobovic (38, 67 Shops), I have most of the ex-YardBird experiences that were lost. I've added them to the end of this file. The comments are in ASCII form only, so there are no hyperlinks. What this means is that you won't be able to just click on someone's e-mail address to send them a message, but you can copy the address and type it in manually.

It's a good thing Nick was downloading the comments to read off-line!

Thanks again, Nick.

Julio: Did you go to the closure ceremony ?? It was painful to attend and see our flag come down for good but there was good chow in 10 building that day and a chance to say goodbye to all your friends if you were there you felt that in the air. CAPT BERGNER, in his speech mentioned a story about the last day 15 Sep 95 that at about 1300 he was driving around pier 6 and saw a rigging gang with thier boss (do not know who) still working he got out of the car and asked the boss if he got the word that all could secure at 1300 and go home the boss looked him in the eye and said "yeah skipper we got the word but me and my men believe in giving you eight for eight sir' skipper said thank you, and got back in his car and drove away you know there was a tear in his eye. Well it turned out that a barge came in about1530 and that gang tied up the barge before they went home about 1700. The audience was silent as we all knew this was coming from his heart and ours too. I mention this story often where I work for the Army they do not have the dedication our family had and will never have again unless we keep in touch and I want to thank you for being so thoughtful to establish this site which in the coming years will grow and grow just like our family did. There's an interesting book that is for sale at the National Archives at 9th & Chestnut it's by Joe Ahearn and titled Images of America PNSY and cost is 14.95 well worth it. There is also a book coming out by Professor of History at Rutgers (Camden) about the 'yard but I think it's not done yet he can be reached at (609) 225-1766 Professor Jeffrey Dorwart. He and Mr. Ahearn will be participating in that synposism in March about the 'yard I encourage everyone to attend I'm going either on a/l or take a sickie remember those... Best Garbage x-17

We've had alot of new ex-YardBirds log on recently and it's unfortunate that I lost the majority of this file when I decided to upgrade to W98. If you decide to do it, BACKUP your files like they tell you to!

I'd like to have anyone who left messages before that were lost to repost your comments and experiences. I especially liked the Stella Stories. They were hilarious. And I'd like to get the YardBird nicknames reposted. It seemed like every other YardBird had a nickname like: Trashmouth, Ironman, Plumb Bob, Louie the salesman, Ed Grater (Rat), etc.

We also had some YardBird sayings, like when someone in the upper deck of the main space dropped a tool, everyone in the space would stop what they were doing and holler: "Keep that shit up there, asshole!"

What an awesome place that was to work at! I went on the Forrestal (Forest Fire?) river run and was totally amazed at the tremendous job we did putting that floating city back together.

Do you remember those Philly Finishes in the main spaces with laggers dropping 'snow' on you?

What an awesome place!

Hey YARDBIRDS take my advice and don't stay awake allnight reading this and then try an e-mail .You know one thing that is really unique about our experiences at the yard was that every person that you met and knew and saw everyday, was originally known or called " MO " and now whenever I meet or someone else mentions the name of a friend or a neighbor who has worked at the the yard I only remember them as " MO " .

I would just like to say that it has been a pleasure to have worked with some of the finest individuals in the WORLD at the " YARD " .
I am very happy to have experience it and I am thrilled to say that I continue to work with some of these same fine, truly masterfull government employees.

GODSPEED to all !

November 22, 1998

Name = Jon and Debra Bergner

EMail = petunia@shore.intercom.net

Ok, ok, So Jon didn't pick our email address. It's a nickname my father who was a machinist journeyman (welder)gave me when I was born. I remember going into the "yard" he worked in and picking up "steelies." Did any of you guys ever get 'em for your kids? Boy I'll tell you, you could do some damage to other kids' marbles....anyway...

Jon and I are fine, although I find more and more, he tells "sea stories" about the yard. I know how much he enjoyed "management by walking around." He loved the shipyard, and he was really heart-broken that the best yardbirds in the world got such a raw deal. You might not believe it, but I remember the day they announced the closure. He was the RO and we sitting in the house on Broad Street watching it on TV. He kept saying, it's going to be close, but I have their (congress) word that Philadelphia will stay open. When they voted I thought he would just curl up and die. You might not have noticed it, feeling the pain you did, but he wanted to carry all that pain for you. When we went to Washington, I'm sure many of you thought he was bailing out...he wasn't. He was going to tell them he wanted to be the CO, that he was the only one who could do it. He didn't want them sending someone in who didn't give a pile of bovine excrement about you! Some of you younger birds might not know that Jon spent several tours of duty at the yard. As a young lieutenant, Docking Officer, onboard a ship you folks fixed perfectly, as a Young Commander, and as a Captain. I think he once told me his first boss at the yard was Blandy Joe. Blandy Joe taught him what it meant to be a PNSY yardbird. It's lasted him all these years.

Is it time for me to get mushy (mushier)? I personally want to thank all of you, whether I have met you or not, for what you did. The price you all paid for being the BEST! As you know, "no good deed goes unpunished." Your loyalty, sense of pride in your work, and your upstanding faithfulness to the cause, is astounding.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for including Jon and I in your family. We will never forget you, we can never replace you in our hearts (as if we wanted to) and we will admire you always.

Debra Bergner

P.S. This letter is for everyone, even the ones who think we're scum.

Terry Really, is this get together at the Lagoon on Sunday Dec. 6th? What time did you say it starts? Do we just show up and grab a table, or is there an area reserved for 26 shop? Just wanted to know before hand. Let's hear from some welders out there. How many people are going to show up? Hope to see some old faces.

By the way Terry, what is the deal with this obsession that Paul Lidel has with you? Tell him what you are doing with yourself these days before he drops another fire extinguisher on his head. So Paul is making $75,000 a year wearing a suit. I think the only suit he is wearing these days has sleeves that strap and buckle in the back. It must be nice resting your head against those padded walls in your cell. Those air-arc fumes really must have destroyed plenty of brain cells.

Hey Decimo ask that big earred wonder DiFaggio if the flies have started partying up at his mountain house? He must be the Ginsing kingpin of the whole east coast. Do the people at the post office call him Jimmy "the rat" DiFaggio yet? I heard from people at your post office branch that he is the biggest crybaby there. True or not?

Take it easy. Nurse Joe

HELLO TO ALL OF THE WELDERS OUT THERE. DOES ANYBODY MISS HOT STAINLESS STEEL SLAG BURNS LIKE THE ONES YOU CAN ONLY GET AT THE YARD? HOW ABOUT ALL THOSE TIMES WHEN YOU JUST GET DONE CLIMBING SIX LADDERS ONLY TO FIND PAINT FUMES WHEN YOU REALLY JUST WANT SOME OXYGEN. I REALLY MISS DUCKING THE VENTILATION HOSES THAT ALWAYS HUNG SO LOW IN THE PASSAGEWAYS. IT SURE HELPED KEEP ME FLEXIBLE. JUST RECENTLY I'VE DISCOVEED THAT YOU ACTUALLY CAN STEP BACKWARDS WITH CONFIDENCE. I ALSO MISS THE RED FLAG DAYS (WELDERS ANNUAL LEAVE)ON BOARD, THIS EIGHT FOR EIGHT SHIT DOESN'T CUT IT. CAN ANYONE ADMIT THAT THEY MISS THE YEARLY ASBESTOS TEST. WAS IT REALLY NECESSARY TO SEE IF YOU COULD MAKE YOUR HEAD EXPLODE ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THE MACHINE DIDN'T REGISTER.
LETS TRY IT THREE MORE TIMES. I ALSO MISS THE INTELLIGENT CONVERSATIONS THAT CAN ONLY BE HAD WITH FIREWATCHES. DOES IT GET ANY CLOSER TO "DELIVERANCE" THAN THAT. MOST OF ALL I MISS THE HALF-HOUR LUNCH. LETS SEE, I'LL GET WASHED UP (AS SOON AS FORTY OTHER PEOPLE GET OUT THE WAY) GO TO STELLA'S (HEAR SOME MORE INTELLIGENT CONVERSATION) EAT, STAND IN LINE TO GET BACK ON BOARD SHIP, MUSTER, NOW IT'S TIME TO GO BACK IN THE MUD DRUM. WHAT A WAY TO DIGEST THAT GREEN CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH THAT YOU JUST ATE.

Hello, my name is Fred Levin, I worked at PNSY for 16 years. I was offered a job at conrail and was recruited by them, received govt. paid for retraining and was subsequently laid off after working at the railroad for only 4 months. I had given up a possoble job at the post office and other govt. job possibilities. I believe this was a gross injustice and heard only recently I was not the only one to be falsely lured into a way to get put off the shipyard rolls prematurely. If anyone has the same experience please e-mail me for possible investigation.

Jim Menkins, are you working at the prop shop? I know Huey Meehan is still there. I remember my first day at the yard I saw Huey all suited up with coveralls and earmuffs, grinding on a guppy wheel that was sitting on a transfer car in the old wheel bay. I knew right away that I wanted nothing to do with that job!

You said Tommy Gilhol and Ray Gentry were picked up by the prop shop. I remember Tommy, but did you mean Roy "the animal" Gentry, my old partner in crime from big A? Tell them all I said hi.

I am currently working as a network administrator at a small company in the city. The only time my hands get dirty is if I trip and fall! But I still remember the good old days on 3rd shift. Did somebody say Party???

Does anybody remember Joe Lista, the breakdown specialist? When he stenciled something, it stayed stenciled! Every now and then he'd miss and the stencil would fly around like shrapmetal. And he had an interesting way of eating his lunch. He would unwrap his sandwich, take a bite, and wrap it up again until he finished chewing. He was evidently afraid of germs, although one time we caught him eating his sandwich while sitting on the crapper.

Jim, due to a bad back, my volleyball days are over, although I can still kick Huey's fat butt any day!

Big A Rules!!!

Hi everyone: I spent half my life in the Shipyard and there will never be another place like it. I have changed my name since those days, you may remember me as Maria Parenti. My fondest memories are from Code 930/960 working for Mechanical and Boiler groups. The likes of Joe Fucci, Tom McNish, and of course the "reborn bachelors", namely Wright, Jasionis, and Pat Foley (I am sure there were more). Franchetti and the gang from 06 shop never gave us a minutes peace. Bernie Moran holds a special place in my heart along with my dear friends, Carol Jo Regan, Theresa Cavicchio, Janet Simms, and my guardian angel, Terry Galli. This web site is great. Reading all the names and comments from former workers brings back so many memories.

I work for Dept of Agriculture in Moorestown, NJ. When the Yard was closing, my office picked up two former yardbirds. John Faraina and Debbie Stewart. I passed the web site information along to them.

Until we meet again......

Mike,
That is it, Ben. There is a funny Grater story connected with this guy. This guy was sitting in a chair in 57 Bldg one afternoon about 2 pm, and let's just say he had his eyes closed (probably "praying"). Tony Pappalardo was boss, and he comes out and gives the guy hell. After Tony leaves we look over and there is Grater welding away not far from where this guy is sitting. Now me and Decimo were never the type to stir up trouble, right jaybird, but this was a perfect setup. We walk over to Ben and he tells us what happened. We say, "I don't know if this is a coincidence but Grater was talking to pappalardo and then Tony came right over to you." This guy walks over to Grater, who is still welding, and gives him a small tap on the head with his chipping hammer. Says, "You ever dime me out again you rat and I'll put this through your head."
Grater gets up ready to cry and there is everyone laughing. We told ben the truth and he said, "It don't matter. The way he rats people out he deserved it anyway." Tony Pap comes out the next day and asks everyone to please leave Grater alone, he feels like everyone is picking on him. Well, you know how things worked at the shipyard. It was like dumping the proverbial gasoline on the fire. Grater was harassed even more than normal. Ed Grater the man who launched a thousand ships, or was that the man who sucked a thousand dic.........oh you get the idea. Take it easy. Nurse Joe

Hello Terry Really,
How are you? Hope all is well for you and yours. You asked if I remember the bottom blow job on the Sara? Boy, do I ever! That was one fun job. I always enjoyed the challenges the yard had to offer. You know how much I enjoyed that stuff. I loved being on the iron. Working the Sara offered various challenges from the nozzles to the superheater work that took place here in Mayport. You know, I can remember almost every ship we worked on! I started out on the Rigel in October '73 with William Thomas Francis Patrick Cupples ( I can still hear him answering the phone like that)as my foreman and after his promotion to GF, Ed Trainor. Talk about 2 different ends of the spectrum! Unfortunately, a trip to the back channel and there is where our history is now.
The best thing we had in Philly was the teamwork though. Whether it was on an emergent job or pulling a Philly Finish, it got done, and pretty well I might add after seeing some of the stuff I get to see. While personal successes were ego-building when I look back I envision what we all did daily to overcome the obstacles of ship repair work. Every shop played a vital role and the strong were there to overcome the weak. When you step back and think about it, the work performed was truly incredible by all.

Nothing could make me more proud of the PNSY team!

Keep in Touch!
Joe Kudashick

Nurse Joe, Just the other day a guy from my New Year's club said he saw Buddy at Penn's Landing during a "Brewfest" a couple of weeks ago. He was working for some Micro-brewery as a salesman. Perfect job for him. I think it's just a part-time gig, he had been working with 420 welding. JimBob is still down the "Yard" working for Public Works in the Crane shop(02). Yeh, he still can B.S. with the best of them, coffee mug in hand. As for that welder in 57 Bldg., could it be Freddy Marrero??? Later, Jaybird

The "remarks" on the water tower were put there by sailors off the Sara. Houle was their division chief, and wasn't well liked. Everytime someone said that Houle wanted something done, the answer was "Houle...f**k Houle". The sailors were caught by the security camera on 541!! Any body heard from Mike Peligrino?

Jaybird,
Does anyone hear from Buddy LeSage? What about JimBob? Is he still stretching his 5 minute stories into 5 hours? Could that boy talk or what? I worked with him and Mike Miller for about seven years straight, and my ears are still bleeding. If Mike Miller started a story with I'll tell you what Mother f***er....... then it was time to start running becuse this was going to be a loooooooooooong story. They were both good guys who I enjoyed working with. One other question does anyone remmber the first name of a welder who worked in 57 Bldg the last three years of existence who's last name was Guererro (something along those lines?

The Planning and Estimating Department held its 4th annual reunion(the yard's only been closed for three years, but that's just an estimate)on Friday,October 16th,1998 at Dave & Buster's on the beautiful Phila waterfront. The party started at 6 PM and lasted into the wee hours(around 10PM which is wee for most of the attendees). A good time was had by all. As in the past 3 years, around 100 people showed up. There were a few more gray hairs and many were sporting a few less pounds. Some of the more legendary P & Eer's were missing(I won't name names now, but wait 'til next year: YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!). KUDOS(never quite sure what that word meant) to Joe Welch(C/232A)for a job WELL DONE!!! Joe has been coordinating the event for the last four years. One of the guys mentioned to Joe that the annual event was a good idea and Joe said he was thinking of changing it to once a year(figures, a machinist!).
Look for the invitation in the mail next year around the Aug/Sept time frame and spread the word. It would be great to see the number doubled for next year(that's 200 for you tin knockers, laggers, painters and PTO's and 220/440 for you electricians and please, someone help the material guys with this big number). Stay healthy, God Bless and see you next year.

I USED TO WORK AT THE YARD AND BACK IN 1969 I WAS WORKING IN 57 BLDG FOR MR. CHARLEY WRIGHT. WE HAD A LITTLE WELDER BY THE NAME OF WILLIE (WINO WILLIE) HE USED TO WORK DOWN IN THE DOOR GANG. WILLIE WOULD SIT ON A STOOL IN FRONT OF YOUR TABLE WITH HIS SHIELD DOWN. YOU COULDN'T TELL WHETHER HE WAS ASLEEP OR AWAKE. WILLIE CAME IN EVERY MORNING HALF TUNED AND STAYED THAT WAY ALL DAY. THEY WERE ALWAYS TRYING TO FIND OUT WHERE WILLIE HIDE HIS STASH (WINE THAT IS). ONE LUNCHTIME I WENT OUTSIDE 57 BY YHE WAYS (YOU USED TO BE ABLE TO PARK THERE IN THOSE DAYS) AND THERE WAS WILLIE WITH THE HOOD OF HIS CAR OPEN AND A STRAW IN THE WINDSHIELD RESERVOIR. INGENUITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION AND BOY DID WE HAVE A LOT OF MOTHERS. IT WAS LIKE THE NAKED CITY, THOUSANDS OF STORIES.

Tom,
I was thinking maybe Nov. 27th, due to the fact that it is the day after thanksgiving, and some people may have off that day. However, we need to hear from more people, so that we can come up with a date that is generally good for everyone. Then we can contact anyone who is not online, or aware of this sites existence. Let's hear for ex-bosses and workers alike. It is already October, so we need to do this now.

Mmmmmmmm.......Jimmy Defazio as Andy's personal nightmare. I know that Jimmy was a nightmare to a lot of people, all you had to do was look at that face and those ears and he looked like a halloween mask gone bad. I know that he didn't like to use the phone, because his ears acted like a pair of suction cups. We needed a chipping gun to pry the phone loose. Hey Decimo tell that weasel that we are still breaking his balls at the shipyard site. It never ends.
Tony D. I think Bobby Madonna doesn't do any chores around the house, because he gave his wife a doctors note saying he is on light duty. The world may change, but some things stay the same.
Jaybird, I watched the implosion of 541 bldg and the water tower with some sadness. However, as the water tower came down I saw a car driving out of 88 lot. Was that you and the boys going with Carl for a three hour breakfast/lunch? As I said above some things stay the same. Tom Sugden suggested in the future setting up a date to meet at Dave & Buster's on Deleware Avenue. Just set a date and see who shows up. Let's hear from some people and find out if anyone is interested. You know Stangler will be there if he can get off from his survelliance job at Home Depot. Have a good one.
