I couldn't believe what an awesome turnout there was! Nice place too! I especially enjoyed when Jim Merkins talked Rick into standing over that air vent in his red dress, although that was more than I needed to know. Best part though, was when Eddy Ockmanowicz started dancing for dollars to Frank Sinatra tunes up on the table with Paul Sers!!!! WOW, certainly a night to be remembered by all. September 8, 1998 Name = Terry Realley Shop = 26 Shop EMail = jatems@aol.com Dear Julio, Haven't been onboard for a while. It's great to see so many names from 26 shop. Julio, you should get the "O" for doing an outstanding job on this web site. Also, you should get a beneficial suggestion award for coming up with such a great idea. Irv Horowitz would be very proud of you. John Gural should put you in for an award! About time someone finally named the Stickman. Stangler gave him that name 'cause he used to stick it up Uncle Sam's butt 8 hours a day. He'd be in the shithouse at 7:31 each morning and spend a couple of hours reading a book. Then he would disappear for a couple more hours. Hey Sugden, the last two years a bunch of 26 shop people got together around the holidays at the Lagoon (near the airport). It will probably happen again this year. Mike Kozak usually gets it going. I ran into a retired welder named Ziegfried aka Ziggy at a Walmart store in Turnersville N.J. He retired in 1984. He just turned 77 years old and still going strong. I also ran into Joe Salvey, 2nd shift welder at 33rd and Market in Philly. He's working for a company called Tri-gen welding and fitting pipe. Tony D.- When are you going to stop crying about not making any vets a G.F.? Jay Billups- You shouldn't be complaining about Carl working your balls off. I heard all you guys do is watch T.V. all day and still get to work weekends. You should feel lucky you were part of the "big fix" and got picked up and are still at the yard. September 7, 1998 Name = Joe Cloud Shop = 026 EMail = MCloud8451@aol.com I was looking at some of the e-mail addresses and i came across a name that brought back a funny story. Back in 1982 on board the USS Tattnal (is that the correct spelling) there was a certain shipfitter who liked to fill up green trash bags with helium and "launch them into space" as he liked to say from the mast area. What made it so funny was that it irked the crap out of Harry "Six-shooter" DeGeorge and Harvey "Who hit me" Schultz. It became their personal vendetta to bring this culprit to "justice". At first they said if they caught anyone doing this that they would be fired. This just made the "Helium Bandit" intensify his or her efforts. When this didn't work they said if any helium gauge was being used and there were no welding sparks in sight then the welder would be fired. You had to stand and laugh as Harvey stood there and tried to look tough. they were constantly sneaking around the boat like incompetent detectives. However, I am sure that everyone that worked for him had a funny Harvey story. I don't want to give the person away just yet, let's see if anyone remembers the infamous "Helium Bandit" See you all in the hospital ward. Tony D I have a special enema bag for you. You must have so much crap stuck inside you after the way those guys boned you on that mast job in 57 building. I tried to set a good example by busting my butt but they were a bunch of freeloaders. By the way is Kaeverner going to finish those masts, because they are still in 57 building probably. I think Carl Madonna is still paying Jaybird off of the hours from that job. Philly YardBird July 28, 1998 Was curious to know if the Saratoga is still docked in Philadelphia, or if they have made the move to Rhode Island yet. My dad was a plank owner on the Saratoga, and I was hoping to get sight of her in August when I have a tripped planned to the area. I doubt the yard is open to the public, but is there anywhere that you can get a good view of the Saratoga and Forrestal from along the river? I kind of hate to see ships laid up awaiting disposal, because they are so far removed from how I remember them when they were active, but in this case I'd really like to see the Saratoga one more time before she goes to the breakers. Thanks for any info, Dudley Bokoski July 28, 1998 Hey Julio , How about that Tony Delia on board finally. He was the best boss in the welding shop, He shoulda been a GF. From there I went to NAVSSES (C/96) via PPP, shortly before closure, which is where I am today. I enjoy the website very much. Some of the names I recognize (and feel free to e-mail me) are Tony Santini & Carol Niglio from my IRO days, Art Sanford & Ken Todd (from Design days). The job is challenging and the people are nice but it's not like being at "home". In the twenty - four years I spent at the yard I saw the Shipyard Family accomplish some remarkable things, things that people outside our world could not even begin to comprehend with regard to skills required, complexity of work and the quality of the product. We should all look back with pride at what we collectivley have done. I miss the daily routines of our little community, but mostly miss the men and women of our unique metropolis, they are what made the Shipyard great. Our's is an exclusive little fraternity. To all of you who have touched my life in one way or another please feel free to email me I would love to hear from you. I will respond to all. Forever a "yardbird" no matter where I go. July 17, 1998 The following is a message I received from Ms. Linda D. Fountain from the US Army Corps of Engineers which administer the Homeowners Assistance Program (HAP). This program may be of help to ex-YardBirds who owned their homes at the time of the Base Realignment and/or Closure announcement. Please pass the word around about HAP. You can download the original attachment by clicking HERE and using WordPad to view it. I'm sure this program would be of help to many ex-YardBirds, so I need your help in disseminating this information. ____________________________________________________ Dear Former Philadelphia Government Employee, This message applies to all federal civilian employees, military service members and NAFI employees who owned and occupied a home in the Philadelphia area at the time of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard realignment/closure actions. A Homeowners Assistance Program (HAP) was approved for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Pennsylvania, on September 4, 1997. The HAP offers assistance to homeowners who face financial loss when selling their homes in an area where real estate values have declined because of a base realignment or closure. There are three types of benefits offered. If you are still trying to sell your home, we may be able to purchase it from you. If you have been fortunate enough to sell your property, we may be able to reimburse you for some of your loss and sales expenses. Additionally, we may be able to offer assistance for a loss incurred if your property has been involved in a foreclosure action. To qualify for assistance, an applicant must have worked or been stationed at or near the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard at the time of either the April 25, 1991, or March 12, 1993, base realignment/closure. The law requires that you must relocate out of the area to accept other employment. The applicant must also have been the owner and occupant of the home for which assistance is requested at the time of the qualifying 1991 or 1993 announcement date. Even if you sold your home or are still trying to sell we may be able to lessen some of your financial burdens. Even though the base closure is several years behind, you may still be entitled to money that has been set aside to assist qualified applicants. If you or someone you know can use this financial assistance, please contact us at the following address or telephone numbers. To receive an application or additional information you may contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District Real Estate Division at: 1-800-861-8144 extension 5181 or 912-652-5181 or e mail at: marlin.s.mason@sas02.usace.army.mil or linda.d.fountain@sas02.usace.army.mil or visit our web site at: http://www.sas.usace.army.mil/hapinv/index.html July 16, 1998 Name = Albert J. Just bumping into my old pal Joe White, brought back a lot of memories and fond discussion of the old days, as well as catching up. I was fortunate to have the training and experience that I received at PNSY. I really miss the 'Yard, but your WebPage brings it alive for me. Thank you for putting the time and effort into this worthwhile endeavor. I was hired by 38 shop in January 81. I mainly worked 3rd shift, in CV machinery spaces. I began my 67 shop apprenticeship in October 84. When Captain Kelly suspended the apprentice program, I went to Puget Sound for half a year. This was a memorable trip. Several dozen of us from 67 shop went there. I still tell stories of our exploits, and, the stories only get better (i.e. embellished) with age! I left the yard for Weapons Station Earle in March 91. In October 97, my organization transferred over to a new command. So I now work for Public Works Center Philadelphia, Site Earle. Although I did not come out of the shops, I recognize most of the names because I worked at the Yard (where Home Jobs were Job #1!) in IRO from 1976 to 1983 and probably sent most of you some kind of notice of rating or did some personnel action on you over the years. After leaving the Shipyard in '83, I still worked for Navy on the base and helped design the Transition Center. Someone mentioned Jack May in a message. Jack passed away about two years ago. I often wonder just how many people he helped get in the Yard while rating those Apprenticeship applications and serving on the Selection panel. Of course, he did this in-between making belt buckles for everybody. As for those I still see or talk to: Harry Murray(06 Shop); Kevin McGowan(11 Shop); Tony Grassia (38); Bob Kelly (72); Phil Cufaro (72); Janice Abruzzo(IRO), Carol Banjock(IRO), Barbara Johnson(IRO). The transaction was realy bad for my family for about 2 years, but we are now adjusting well. It is a nice place to work. I also was given 4 months of TQSE, but when I submitted my claim this command turned down 2 months of my TQSE. It ended up costing me $7,000. Also after I was here for nine months I was given a lay-off slip. It took me 8 months to sell my house in New Jersey. So at that point I was with out a house and no job. The last day I was intended to work they cancelled my lay-off, because a forman retired. The command new about the retirement two months prior to the last day, but did not cancelled it until the last day. If I knew what I know now I would have taken my retirement money and paid my house off in New Jersey and looked for a job up there. Well everything is turning out pretty good and will take time to adjust from this experience. I hope everyone that got jobs from the government did not have as hard as a time as me and my family had. Is he president of the Home Depot or what? Every 26 shop person he sees either works or shops there. J.J.(Pugsley)Hughes is still around, I am shocked. Does the Grog have his own private parking space for his forklift? As far as those nicknames: Many people called Ed Grater "Snaggletooth", but he will always be know in 26 shop as "The Rat". Uncle Al the Kiddies Pal was welder Al Bethuseum (not sure of the spelling). He was certifiably nuts. Two quick true stories. Once his wife was nagging him to take the window airconditioner out for the winter. He got so angry he ran up and shoved it out the window(lucky no one was hurt) He comes in to work the next day and bites into his sandwich. Well his wife put dog food with cigarette butts on the sandwich. I thought I would lose my lunch right there. The other story was when the Senator was coming to visit the base. Al was an apprentice and we were in the welding school. He told us to keep our eyes open for a surprise. As the Senator was being led towards 57 building Uncle Al comes walking through the school wearing a dress, highheels and a army hat. He said he was going to pull a Klinger (the guy from MASH) and get a section eight out of the Navy Yard. Well John Bell, the Welding Instructor, physically grabbed him and dragged him into the office. I thought Bell was going to kill him. One last thing. Just read Chuck Amicone's message about Louenbrau. First worked with him on the USS Resolute (plenty of memories from that rust bucket), and he was a great guy. Sorry to hear about that. There has to be at least 50 or so people here from the Shipyard. Bill Mc Murtrie had ask about Cas? Well Bill She passed on about a year maybe a yearand a half ago. June 11, 1998 Name = Bob D'Adamo Shop = 06 shop EMail = rdad@earthlink.net Hey Yardbirds, just a quick update about some people you might be wondering about. I left the yard in January 95 to work for Navy Public Works Center in Norfolk Va. (not the shipyard). Shortly there after more Philly Yardbirds started ariving. We all felt pretty secure here being this is the largest naval base in the world and there is so much navy here; however in the past six months there have been two RIF's, and probably more on the way. Seems as though the navy wants to contract out everything. These are just the people that I know about, and what's up with them. From 06 shop, in addition to myself there is Mike Thompson, Josh Pope, Ike Hill, Lenny Owens and Jack Hoffbauer (06 and 380), all still here. From 31 shop, John Manall and Ray Miller. Ray got hit in the first RIF, but got picked up at Camp LeJune in North Carolina. John is still here. From 26 Shop, Mark Stellato, Mark resigned about a year ago and moved back north. From 07 shop Dianne Frascella, still here, PWC at the naval hospital in Portsmith. From 71 shop, Tom McCullun, Tom got hit in the first RIF and got picked up at Paris Island in South Carolina. From 67 shop, Ron Davis, still here. From 72 shop, Bob Baily (hospital) and Bill Domzalski, still here. From 50 shop(supply) Phil Crawley, still here. You 31 shop guys will remember Phil from the bar stock room. There are probably more of us around that I don't know about, I understand that there is a woman from 17 shop here, but I don't know her. Except for the two 72 shop guys I see all the rest on occasion, some every day. If anyone needs to contact any of these guys, Email the info to me and I'll get it to them. Maybe if I get RIFed again Jim Merkins could pick me up from the PPP list and move me back north. Well Yardbirds, thats all for now, till next time..... June 11, 1998 hello! spotted John Hughes x26 strolling down Kensington Ave the other day. Bob the Grog x26 has been seen at Pier 1, not at the shipyard , the taproom at G and Tioga. Worked with some really great people, who also became good friends. Guys like John Cocco, Joe Merlino, Mike Heck, Joe Tompkins just to name a few. I left 81 Shop in 1985 and started working in Code 2900 (NAVSHIPSO). Although, most of us complained about the management at NAVSHIPSO, it wasn't a bad place to work. Again, alot of good people. I stayed at NAVSHIPSO until November 1992, when I left the Navy to work for Defense Logistics Agency, Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) at 20th & Johnston St. in South Philly. I really enjoyed the 18 years working down the yard. I still work with alot of the people from the yard in my current job, and we talk about all the crazy things we did back then. I only spent about three weeks working on the Saratoga, so I don't know who Stella was, but does anybody remember Cas from the gedunk across from the Cafeteria. Jack McKenna (x38, C/261.2) told me about this site and the nonsense that Art Sanford wrote. As I read some of the comments listed, I laughed at the memories, the nicknames and the world according to Art Sanford. I started at the Yard as a co-op in Design Division in 1980. I got my BS in Mechanical Engineering and started working for Bill Hannan (a real character) in C/261.2 in 1984. And yes, I'm sorry to say I worked with Art Sanford. From there I went to work in Type Desk (SY Business Office) on the Conny in 1990. I went back to Design Div in 1993 and stayed until I was laid off in 1995. The work that was done there always amazed me. To see ships come in the drydocks, set on their keelblocks, torn apart and then put back together was an awesome sight. I presently work with Troy Systems. We have a contract with the State Department to research, input and analyze purchase and logistic records originating from the 70's for the Foreign Military Sales Program and it is BORING. I hope someone can end my misery and help me get a job in engineering. I know it won't be as good as I had it at the Yard, but something has to be better than this. If you didn't receive a letter, call the Private Industry Council (PIC) at 1 800 376-7129. Also, if interested in employment with Kvaerner, send a resume to PIC NOW!! Recruitment for engineers will start next week. They are looking for ship experience and CAD. If you have CAD experience and no degree, send a resume anyway. Production hiring will start later this year but its important to send a resume now. PIC's address is Building 100, Philadelphia Naval Business Center, Phila., PA 19112. PIC needs updated addresses for future mailings. Any questions, e-mail me. Here's a copy of the letter: May 18, 1998 Dear Sir or Madam: Kværner ASA has recently agreed to open a shipbuilding facility on the grounds of the former Philadelphia Naval Base and Shipyard. Kværner's investment in Philadelphia is a pinnacle event in the effort led by Governor Ridge and Mayor Rendell to restore Pennsylvania and Philadelphia to their roles as national economic leaders and makers of goods for the world. You have the opportunity to be part of the rebirth of the globally competitive commercial shipbuilding industry in Philadelphia. The jobs created by Kværner will not be federal government positions. Kværner is a private sector employer. The hiring process for employment with Kværner will be competitive. If you are interested in being considered for these positions, the first step in the hiring process is to update your resume and send it to the Private Industry Council (PIC) of Philadelphia. Your resume should include your current address and telephone number. This should be sent to the PIC at the following address: Private Industry Council (PIC) of Philadelphia Philadelphia Naval Business Center 3600 South Broad Street, Building 100 - Room 205 Philadelphia PA 19112 The resumes will be the basis of the initial phase of the recruitment of potential candidates for Kværner. Even if you have sent your resume to another organization or office, please send another one to the PIC. If you do not have a resume and wish to create one, please call the PIC toll-free at 1-800-376-7129 to register for a Resume Workshop. Hiring is projected to begin by mid-1998, with the hiring of production workers slated to begin in early 1999. Kværner needs highly skilled employees and expects that once hired, all of their employees will receive approximately five years of training. A comprehensive assessment process will be used to customize the training to the employee's skills and needs. Training will occur both in the classroom and on-the-job at no cost to the employee. The PIC is the clearinghouse for information on job opportunities with Kværner. Periodic updates will be mailed to those who express interest in employment opportunities at Kværner Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. by sending a resume to the PIC. You can get on the mailing list today by sending your resume to the PIC at the above address. Sincerely, Paul A. May 13, 1998 Name = Darryrl Johnson Shop = 17 shop, P&E, Type Desk EMail = johnson_darryrl%pax8b@mr.nawcad.navy.mil Great web page. I was able to get e-mail addresses of some lose souls. This is the true story of how the rooster got in the steel field near DD-5. In the summer of 1994, the USS Kennedy was pier-side finishing her overhaul. A 39 shop yard worker brought in a young rooster from his farm to be given to another 39 shop worker for his future farm. In reality, the new owner was going to going plump him up and eat him. It was kept in a large brown paper bag and was bound by its feet. Around quitting time, the bag was placed outside of the Warminster building (trailers) while the owner went inside for a moment. A startled smoker jumped away from the moving bag. Within no time, the rooster was out the bag and loose. The overweight and elderly new owner was running after it with a stick. It was a sight. We almost died laughing. All of a sudden the rooster flew to the roof of the trailers and down into the steel fields. He was impossible to recapture without heavy moving equipment. The bird ate everything in sight and somehow survived a brutal winter. even our notorious yard cats and rats avoided this bird. During the spring of 1995, arriving yard workers and sailors would be met with crowing every morning from 6-7:00am. Another worker felt sorry for the lonely rooster. He brought in a couple of hens, and soon thereafter the steel field was loaded with chicks. In September 1995, the majority of the workforce was laid off, and I was demoted and returned to the office for BRAC clean-up. I don't know happened to the rooster and his family. We were told that the steel fields were to be cleared and the residents were going to a farm owned by another yard worker. Watching this tough "yard bird" survive gave us some laughter and inspiration in very difficult times. Thanks for the opportunity. I've been employed by NAVAIR in PAXRIV, MD since the closure, but I will always be yardbird. Keep in touch. It was open in the center and they built another building inside of it for offices. May 12, 1998 Name = Julio Casiano Shop = 67964-026 Finally got my book, Images of America, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard by Joseph-James Ahern (seems UPS couldn't find my address). Alot of nice old pictures and alot of Navy Yard facts I wasn't aware of. It seems the Navy Yard was first in many things. I found myself looking at the various pictures under bright light trying to identify building numbers and landmarks familiar to me. I didn't see any pictures or references of Building 2. I was always fascinated by this building as a YardBird because it had a date on it going back to the 1800's (1886?). I love looking at old buildings, especially if they have a corner stone proclaiming their age. It's even better if it's in Roman Numerals! There was another building I used to like to look at. I don't know what it's number was but I believe it was located behind the Firehouse. It was very small and was constructed of mortar and little stones. I had someone tell me that the stones were taken right out of the river and that they were called riverstones so I always referred to it as the Riverstone Building. It didn't seem to serve any function when I used to go look at it, but I got the impression that it was Historic by it's appearance. If anyone remembers this building, please share any knowledge you have of it's history or function. There was another structure at the Yard that fascinated me, and it was the Hammer Head Crane. I still can't believe they tore it down! You don't know how many times I was tempted to climb up into it, even though it had been condemned. There are two things I regret not having experienced at the Yard because I came too late: new construction and watching the Hammer Head crane do it's thing! There's a picture on page 41 of a PNSY Seal different from the Seal I have in my opening page which depicts the silhouettes of a surface ship and a submarine in front of the Hammer Head Crane. I've never seen this seal before. If anyone has a reproduction of it that can be scanned and transferred to .gif format, please send it to me. I will add it to the top of this page. I believe it came before the Seal I've grown to know. Second, KYW-3 will have a program on the Yard during its morning show this month for sweeps week. I'm not sure of the date, they have not told me yet. It might be a two parter. Finally, I have a book our on the Yard that is a Photographic history. It's called Philadelphia Naval Shipyard by Arcadia Press. The exhibit examines the Philadelphia Navy Yard from its founding to the present with emphasis on the unique role of the Yard in the development of the United States Navy, the impact of the Yard on the Philadelphia region, the community within a community formed by the Yard, and the Yard's role in wartime, including the Spanish-American War. Themes focus on the birth of the Navy, employees of the Yard, the physical layout of the Yard, vessel construction at the Yard, the modern era of the Yard, the mothballing of the fleet, the social life of Yard, records of the Yard, and the future of the Yard. The exhibit features rare nineteenth-century ship drawings, daily logbook entries, personal effects of employees (such as identification badges, tools, and clothing), oral interviews with employees, videotapes, vintage photographs, and glass plate negatives held by the National Archives, as well as artifacts from other Philadelphia institutions and NBC news footage of the Yard. Children can enjoy sending messages with signal flags, coloring their own ship drawings, and taking their photographs in cutouts of Yard employees. The exhibit is open to the public from April 20, 1998, through March 31, 1999, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and the second Saturday of each month from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Hearing some of the nicknames brought back a lot of great memories, especially, Airplane Sammy gave me a flash back. It was 1968, I was a 3rd year apprentice in 31 Shop doing my 3 month tour in 38 Shop. Me and a 38 Mechanic were walking across the flight deck, past the Island, of the Saratoga (pre-SLEP), there was Sammy talking in a TWA plane, giving him the thumbs up and saluting him as it went past. I asked the Mechanic who he was, not missing the chance to break them for me, he said, " He's from the airport, they send him here when we have a big ship in DryDock 5 so their planes don't hit the ship." Well being young and dumb it sounded reasonable to me until 2 days later, we were standing in line at the bank (now PPP Center) cashing our check and I hear behind me, "OK flight 322 you are clear on runway 4-9er". I turned and yes, there was Airplane Sammy. I asked the Mechanic, shouldn't he be on the ship. He just shrugged and said, "Hey, He hasn't lost a plane yet". I am now at the Naval Academy in Annapolis MD and everything is going well. But what I wouldn't give for a Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a roll from the Blind Man. I've heard some ex-YardBirds where I work now call themselves 'Moe'. I'm talkin' about Mark Haber, Mike Cunningham, and Charlie Kensil. What's a 'Moe'? April 16, 1998 Name = John D. Mac Lean III Shop = 67 Shop Code 950 Check No. 91168 EMail = AtlasIII@aol.com or AtlasIII@juno.com As a member of the 1994 Graduating Apprentice class I was well know in 67 shop for my work on the mast Radar, ECM, Communcations and Navagational Aides antennas. I started my career at the yard a year out of High School as a WG-08 Electrican in 51 shop. Then I merit promoted into 67 shop just 6 months after starting work at the yard. In my opinion 67 had to be the best shop to work for. Great bunch of guys plenty of old salts to learn the work from, and for the most part a fairly clean job when working aboard the carriers. Pulling 400 cable through voids aboard the carriers while in 51 shop made me appreicate 67 shop even more. Although the work was not a dirty it was to me more of a challenge. I was voted "Most Missing Man" in my apprenticeship class by the instructors and the apprentices. During the big slowdown after the Connie left their was a lot of trips and work to do in other places. So I took advantage of being single, saw a little bit of our fine country and tried to stay hopeful about the shipyard's future. Always knowing however that my federal career was drawing to a close. I loved working at the yard. Each ship was a challenge and we hated to see her leave when the work was all done. I enjoyed working on the ships so much that I ended up joining the Navy Reserves and I am happy to report that I have been working on the mast antennas of a few ship April 16, 1998 Name = Julio Casiano Shop = x26 I've used that phrase many o' times in Main Spaces. Also have cut the air off on those Squids needle gunnin' down there, too. They used to drive everybody crazy. Can you imagine what it was like when those ships were put together by Riveters? I think those Laggers with their white dust falling on you was the worst, though. An ex-YardBird I work with (John Emers - P\W) gave me a copy of an article from a paper in Jersey about Joseph-James Ahern who wrote the book on the Shipyard (still haven't gotten my copy yet, by the way). He's a 25 year old public historian from Somerdale, NJ. The book's supposed to have hundreds of vintage Navy Yard photos. Sounds like it's going to be a pretty good book. I'm going to try and see if I can post the article here if the paper has a webpage where I can download it from. The article also stated that the National Archives and Records Administration - MidAtlantic Region will be displaying photos and memorabilia of PNSY at its headquarters at Ninth & Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia starting on Monday, April 20. "The Mainstay of the Fleet" exhibit will be open to the public for free 8am to 5pm Monday thru Friday, and the second Saturday of each month thru year's end. Joseph-James Ahern can be contacted at the Atwater Kent Museum (215) 922-3031. Info on the National Archive exhibit is available at (215) 597-3000. I was hysterical when I read that story about the guy finding a roach in his soup, now that was a real classic. Even though I live in New York I still root for the Flyers and the Eagles. I liked the Flyers third jersey so much I bought one for myself to showoff in front of my new friends from NY. For some reason I don't think they like the jersey as much as I do. I wonder why?? I understand that three German Schnelbooten (S-boats or E-boats) were brought back from Europe after the war. Also, PT812, one of the last PT boats built in the USA was designed, built and launched at the 'yard. Later, her sister craft, PT 809, 810 and 811 were laid up in storage at the 'yard. During Vietnam, the first of the Nasty class PTFs were unloaded from transport and fitted out at the 'yard. April 9, 1998 Name = Jim Brennan Shop = 26 EMail = bren6@altavista.net Yo Julio & Co., Great idea and an outstanding job with the homepage. I was in here the other night for the first time and planned to write, but I got engrossed in everyone's messages, then I got to the nicknames and couldn't stop laughin'. I can't remember the last time Joe M____r F____r came to mind, and No Tanks Frank? I got a good laugh out of that engineer's letter too. I remember him and its probably the most coherent thing he ever wrote. I wouldn't waste too much time thinking about him though, he'll be unhappy down there in another year or two and be badmouthing southern folk too. Next he'll be off to Alaska. I'm more interested in thinking about the positive things that happened at the shipyard, and from my perspective everything except the closing was positive. The way I look at it, a bunch of guys, from K&A, South Philly, Tacony, South Jersey, Delaware County and God knows where else, learned a trade, got good at it, and completely overhauled the most complex floating hunk of steel the Navy owns. Not only that, but the hunk of steel goes on to win "Ship of the Fleet" the following year and defends our nation in some major international conflicts. That's pretty significant. Every guy, and gal, who participated in the achievement should be proud of our accomplishments. I bump into some yardbirds now and then, and I always laugh hardest when we're reminiscing. I keep in touch with Bud Applegate and see him once in a while in DC. I keep in touch with Jerry Mayo and used to see Joe Ford, Bobby Wright, Walt Youngheim and Tony Migniona from time to time. I still work with a bunch of ex-birds, some of which I see have already found the page. Well I better save some for later. I'm one of those guys you used to see wandering around the yard with a black hardhat on his head and a dirty tool bag on his shoulder, and you would say, "who is that guy". My job gave me the opportunity to work in just about every area and building in the yard, and even though it's been over three years since I've left, I can still see those images in my minds eye as if it were yesterday. There were many days that I griped about how things were run or how we were treated, but to tell you the truth, I would go back in heartbeat if it were possible. What I miss the most are the people, and the fun we all had, not every day, but most of the time, and guess what, I even miss the work that I did. I worked for many years between the machine shop and the foundry/prop shop. In January of 1995 I transferred to the Navy Public Works Center in Norfolk Virginia as an Industrial Equipment Mechanic and although I am greatful for having a job, I appreciate the yard and the work I did that much more. Luckily, there are several other guys here from the yard and we kind of hang out some, although unfortunatly two of them have just gotten RIFed again, but have already been picked up by other commands (which proves that cream rises to the top, especially Philly Cream)but sadly they do have to move again. It's not bad living in Virginia Beach, but I do miss my old buddies, my family and of course the food (no rolls). I'd welcome any email and I'd like to give my thanks for this site. And every day when I pull out of my garage I think about how lucky I am to be out of that disgusting State of Pennsylvania! And to think that at one time I actually liked it there. The land of dirty old telephone polls, smelly old houses, smelly old empty factories, smelly old people, and cold weather. Toll bridges if you want to go someplace even more disgusting, New Jersey. And after you pass all the slimy communities in New Jersey you arrive at the beach and they make you pay for it!! I never knew how good life could be until I moved South! Down here folks are nice. They are friendly. They talk to everyone. They are in better shape; they are better looking. The climate is milder; palm trees all around. The pool is open May 1 to September 30. The clean free beach is open year round. It doesn't get any better than this! Luckily my children are being raised down here, attending the one Catholic school in a town of 35,000, talking that Southern talk and being happy and friendly. Hopefully they will be raised before any more rotten Yankees come down here. But usually those obnoxious Yankees stop in Myrtle Beach and leave us alone down here in Charleston. They would rather be at a loud crowded beach then someplace quiet and peaceful and slow moving. Good for them. I agree with the local bumper sticker, "Happiness is a Yankee headed North". There might be a down side here at NAVFAC in that I am surrounded by a bunch of fruity engineers but any memories of Philadelphia are memories of a cold and miserable lifestyle. Dirt and grim covering everything. Trash on every corner. Rude and obnoxious people everywhere. Even the Phillies and Eagles stink now too! Philadelphia-you can have it! THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN!! I think it is outstanding that you have this Shipyard page. The pride in your contribution comes through loud and clear and I can relate to the camaraderie that you all share. Speaking of camaraderie, I am currently assisting in the creation of a "one stop shopping" for a Submarine memorial page that we intend to launch on 1 May (In time for Memorial Day). Our intent is to make it the definitive and single-resource webpage for directions/background/images/history of every U.S. SUBMARINE related memorial that we can find anywhere in the country. The memorial site does not have to be large - a single brass plaque on a granite slab or mounted on a building is OK and we will list it. It does not have to be currently on the net (most are not). Many are in public parks or at some place such as a shipyard or waterfront park. If any of you folks recall any such animal at the old Philly yard or anywhere in the region PLEASE e-mail me. Haven't forgotten my check number either (48841-xxx) but like you, have trouble remembering the kids' birthdays. Started working in the yard in '67 after separation from military service. Yard was hopping then with plenty of new construction. I remember the cold of working in Drydock #5, on the sponsons and flight deck of the LPH-11 when the 'Hawk' would come off the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers! Had someone explain that the space heaters that x99 installed were provided to make the cables "easier" to handle and not for creature comforts. Those cables were never easy to handle especially if a 'piano player' or two were on it! Got rifted in '71 and spent two years in supply and then returned to x51. Yard was busy then in the DLG-6 AAW/ASW Modernization Program, but new construction was over for Public Yards! I wonder if Peter ever got paid back when the last DLG was completed as you always heard they were "robbing Peter to pay Paul"? Never thought that this yard would close though..... so many accomplishments and so much heritage, something that the Navy relishes itself in. But it did and one can only hope that the right choice was made! It's a shame that the base didn't have a world-class golf course associated with it! As for nicknames, I remember the Deacon (x11d), Clean Hands, Crazy George (x67), The Boomer, Konehead, Flange-Face, of course Sammy and his air traffic controlling (x64), Trash Mouth (x11), Shiney Shoes, Captain Nemo, The Turk, Mister, The Coach, Save-a-penny-Benny, Jughead and Little Joe! (Unless otherwise noted, all are x51) Hope that Kvaerner will create as many great memories and great people as once were the case with the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Left the foundry in 1989 to go to 039 shop as a GF working for Vince Yancey, who was replaced by Jonny "O", who was replaced by Al Helm. Graduated from 039 shop to go to NAVSHIPSO to work for Mike Marziano. Retired Sept 95. Drove Tractor Trailer for about 2 years (over the road) Now working for a local company in Delaware. Happy, happy, happy---I miss all the yardbirds. A big thanks to Julio for putting this together. Hope to hear from you guys. TED March 3, 1998 Hi, In 1959 I was part of the commissioning crew of the USS Little Rock CLG-4. She was converted from a CL to a guided missile light cruiser at the NY Shipyard in Camden. The final work was done when she was brought around to the Philly yard. Anyway was doing some "remembering" of that time, so I have a few questions just to get caught up. (Found your page by doing a search of the shipyard). There was a civilian nuc ship at Camden at that time (the Savanna). I don't recall that it was ever put into operation. If you have any internet links about that ship or the NY Shipyard I would appreciate having them. I have tried several searches on all the obvious key words but no dice. A couple other things I recall: there was a food stand inside the gate that was run by a blind man and someone said he was the famous South Philly Marine who was wounded in the Pacific in WWII. Does that ring a bell? (There was a movie made about him but I don't recall the name). There was a bar at the end of the subway called Sharkeys. Wonder if it is still there. And does that distillery still exist that smelled so bad? (Near the bridge to Camden) Old Taylor, I think. And I remember those great soft pretzels too from the little carts. Are they still around? Sorry for bugging you with so many questions. Just remembering some good times long ago in Philly. You guys did good work. The Little Rock was a very fine ship. It was a real shame to break up a work force that time after time demonstrated its skill and knowledge of overhaul and repair of Naval vessels. There was a tremendous amount of talent from every discipline working on PNSYs waterfront. When it counted, PNSY was truly second to none. February 10, 1998 Dear Sirs, This note is to ask your help in researching a novel which begins in PNSY in 1990. My name's David Poyer, and I've done 18 or 19 novels to date, including THE MED, THE CIRCLE, THE GULF, and THE PASSAGE -- surface line Navy novels (I'm an O-6 1115 myself). THE MED and THE CIRCLE are often included as required reading at Annapolis, in the Literature of the Sea course there. And TOMAHAWK will be out next month. You can check out my web page at www.esva.net/~davidpoyer. The new one I'm starting now, CHINA SEA, opens at Philly NS in 1990 with a Knox-class frigate being repaired after a boiler explosion. I'd like to ask your help in locating a map of the NSY and environs, a description of the yard circa 1988-1992, and perhaps a steer to someone online who could advise me about the yard's procedures for boiler repair -- what shop, what procedures, work gang composition, local union representation, safety procedures, etc. Please respond to wildflower@esva.net soon, as I am starting this chapter next week. Thanks again and I appreciate what you're doing. You may want to pass on that there's going to be a PNSY historical display in the lobby at the Nat'l Archives on 9th & Chestnut some time in April. Also, there was an interesting article about plans to convert Bldg. 3 (formerly C/970 Services Group office and Shop 99) into a terminal for a cruise ship company. I worked in there. I'd have to believe it to see it. Appreciate what you're doing J. I am working on a project that evaluates the media's coverage of this event. Specifically, we are comparing how daily papers like the Inquirer and Daily news handled it in comparison to weekly papers like the Philadelphia Business Journal and the Philadelphia Tribune. Do you have any thoughts on how this was covered by the newspapers? Was anyone biased? Did anyone do a better or more accurate job? Does the shipyard have a history with any of the papers? I'd appreciate any thoughts you can share related to the media or your thoughts in general regarding this project. Thank you. In between I had the opportunity to make friendships that still last today. To me this was what the Yard was all about. I still think and talk about the Yard often and I know it was an important part of my life that I'll never forget. There are two other yardbirds at my post office. As always, you did a fantastic job. I started at the Yard as an apprentice welder in 1975 and continued in various capacities until 1990. Since 1990 I have worked at NAVSEA in the Shipyard Management Group. I will never again have the opportunity to foster the great relationships I had with my co-workers at the shipyard. For those who are interested, I regularly see Kirby Aitkens (Shop 11), when I was in the Pentagon I would run into Bob Marghilano (Shop 56), I ran into Leroy Smalley (Shop 26) in the local Wal-Mart here, and ran into Jim Conroy (Shop 72) by the Pentagon. Many of our other brethren work around here at the Washington Navy Yard, in Bethesda, and as evidenced by John Malamon, in Annapolis. I am in occasional contact with Mike Murphy (Shop 26), Jim Brennan (Shop 26), and all the guys in Code 2900 which is now attached to Norfolk Naval Shipyard. I consider myself lucky that I was able to transfer to Aberdeen Proving Ground through the PPP. I think there is one other yardbird here from X56, Roy? The best part about working at the shipyard for me was the travel. I was able to go from Maine to Florida, San Diego to Seattle, Japan, Hawaii, and to Bahrain (twice). December 29, 1997 Name = Mike Grasso Shop = 31 shop EMail = guido@acronet.net Hey Ya, Man do I see now how good I had it a Philly. I was at the yard from Sept. 79 to Dec. 95. I took a PPP job at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois. No cheesesteaks, soft pretzels or hoagies. The winters are long and bitter cold and they don't report any sports here except Da Bears, Da Bulls, Da Blackhawks or the only thing the state of Wisconsin has going for itself, the Packers. I miss watching the Philly teams and I can't stand hearing about all the players they worship hear from the above teams. While at Philly, I worked in the Turret section of 31 shop. My last GF was Fred Haegele. My favorite memories of the yard was the golf outings with my buddies in 31 Shop. True Golf Hackers like, George Dominic, Rick Renderer, Tony Caringi, Dan Maguire, Frank Peahota, John Manall, Paul Morales and from 38 shop, Rich Aurite. If those fellas happen to see this or if anybody has a chance to talk to them, give em my E-mail address and tell em I'd like to hear from them. I'm working in Public Works with Tom Varley, 38 shop. I also see C. Kessler and R. Mattie every day as we have the same boss. I check the internet almost every day for job openings and someday hope I'll have the opportunity to get a job on another base where the weather is better. I also live in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Hope to hear from my fellow Yardbirds soon. Take Care. Mike Grasso, 31 shop December 26, 1997 I also found some info about this plant. Apparently it was located at or adjacent to the shipyard's Naval Boiler and Turbine Laboratory. Apparently, the liquid thermal diffusion process required "volcanic magnitudes of steam" to process the uranium. Construction began on at least 100 diffusion columns in January 1944, with completion scheduled by July 1944. The columns were designed by famous physicist Philip Abelson. The Army apparently wasn't interested in the Navy joining the Manhattan Project, but the value of Liquid Thermal Diffusion couldn't be ignored. The Navy had to secretly provide this information to Oppenheimer at Los Alamos through the Navy Bureau of Ordnance so that Oppie could alert General Groves (who didn't want Navy involvement) that this process must be pursued. This work ultimately lead to a larger plant being built at Oak Ridge, TN. I hope this information helps. Sincerely, Timothy Karpin e-mail: tkarpin@mother.com December 25, 1997 Name = Jim McFarlane Shop = Supply/Management Engineering Office EMail = jimbo@mcfar.netkonect.co.uk I started at the yard in 1977 as a Drexel University CO-OP in the Supply Department, Code 502. I did two CO-OP stints and started full time in January 1979, managing industrial gases and related materials for the Supply Department. From then until 1992, I worked a number of jobs in Supply, ending up at Code 140Q, the Philadelphia Quality Process Coordinator (PQP). I have nothing but the greatest respect for the folks I worked with and fondest memories of my years at PNSY. I still try to get people to understand the feelings during SLEP sea trials or INSURV and the way people did all they could to make ships ready for sea. Like others who have left messages on this website, I think it's a great idea and applaud everyone involved. I also know that I was lucky to have worked for many great people during my time. In 1992 I left PNSY to work for U.S. Naval Forces Europe, at the Headquarters in London. Every time I came back to the states I always stopped in to see old friends and was amazed when I went to the Credit Union last week and ran into two folks I knew! I'll be in London until late 1999, so if anyone wants some PNSY hospitality and help with vacation plans, don't hesitate to send me an email. Hope everyone has a great new year. Cheers, Jim. December 23, 1997 Dear Sir: I am presently doing research on the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and its involvement with the WWII-era Manhattan Project. I understand that a liquid diffusion pilot plant for separating Uranium-238 from Uranium-235 was built at the yard in 1944. I also understand that an explosion caused the shutdown of the pilot plant in October 1944. I would like to know where this plant was located on the yard, do its buildings still exist, and is there any other historical info on this project. Also, is it possible to obtain a map of the yard? Like many of the rest of you, I "grew up" at the Shipyard, being the son of a WW II Shipyard worker, and a Shipyard apprentice fresh out of high school. Many memories and great "life experience" training. I was always instilled with the idea that being a government employee put me in a second class status when it came to outside employment opportunities, so I was very surprised when hired by and Aerospace firm as a planner prior to being laid off. It was soon obvious to me why this firm needed my services. As much as I used to look at management at the Shipyard as leaving something to be desired, after having worked "outside" for about 3 years, believe me, the Shipyard was a really well run operation. They weren't blowing smoke when they said we were the most cost effective and productive shipyard in the nation. Count me among those who say they were PROUD to serve at PNSY, and to have dedicated 23 years of my life to her. I've dove every tank from the Biddle to the King and the Mahan, Lextington, Saratoga and Constellation, made Mega Bucks on OT and "River Runs" and ate cheap hoagies and beacon egg n chesse sandwiches at the "Blindman" and Stella's loved it. Now I'm a Computer Network Specialist with FEMA (Federal Emger. Mgmt. Agency) in Phila. Started as temporary and lucked up and made permanent. I lucked up on this one. No other "Yard birds" here. I don't miss that type of work... but I miss the people and the friendships and I miss that sort of being a part of an expirence that we'll never forget. It was almost like being in the service again....you know? The sites and the sounds. It's hard to explain to other people the things we've seen or have been exposed to, or been a part of. Like Dead Load Launches, flooding the Dry Docks, being in the Fire Rooms during L.O.E., or eating lunch on the "Fan Tail" and etc. Harden "Birds know what I'm talking about.... To me, The Yard was the launching pad for adulthood, and a significant part of my childhood. My family grew and prospered on the employment and education we received there. This is why... James R. (Pop-Pop) McCullough was an immigrant from Ireland in the 1920's. Pop was a carpenter, and worked at PNSY, often removing Teak wood decks with awe tools, and replacing them with a craftsmans expertise. James H. (Dad) McCullough was an Electrician Apprentice in Shop 51, then converted to Electronics Mech Apprentice when Shop 67 opened. Dad graduated in '51, went on to become a Shop 67 Supervisor, and retired from NAVSES as a Submarine ECM Mast Program Lead in the late '80s. James A. Best Wishes to all the yardbirds... November 13, 1997 Hi Wendy, I'm not from the Lehigh Valley area, sorry. I'm from Voorhees, NJ (Camden County). But briefly, I'll let you know that I'm not at all excited about private industry taking over at the shipyard. So much of what the Phila. Naval Shipyard was and what made it unique was the ever present Naval and military rules, regulations and culture. For example, a lot of the language used was military based (i.e. muster, Gedunk, colors, head - etc.). A new civilian employee there would be in a state of culture shock, almost like visiting another country. I don't believe that would persist in a private industry yard. Also, so many of the shipyard's former employees have moved on to other careers and jobs, that a reproduction of the yard's personality could never happen. Sure, I recognize the benefits that our economy would reap from private industry investing at the shipyard, but the true Phila. Naval Shipyard, and all of the character and culture that went with it, is dead. Let's view this new private sector investment as a separate entity and not have any expectations that it could ever be anything like what once existed at the southern tip of Broad St. Joe Quartullo November 12, 1997 Name = Wendy Warren EMail = wendy.warren@mcall.com Congratulations on a great site! I FEEL VERY BLESSED TO HAVE A JOB, BUT I DO MISS THE SHIPYARD VERY MUCH TAKE CARE----KELLEY November 5, 1997 Name = Dan Noble Shop = Admin, Supply and Comptroller EMail = Noble@nadn.navy.mil Great idea! A web site for ex-yardbirds! BRAVO! I am former yardbird. From 1978 till 1985, I worked in the Administrative Department under Sid Blum as the Yard's Forms, Publications and Printing Manager. Then in 1985/6, I was transferred into the Supply Dept. as the same because the Adminstrative Dept was abolished. Then in the Fall of 1986, I applied for a job in the Comptroller Department in which I was hired for. From October 1986 till November of 1993, I worked for Ray Donnelly and Dennis Cribben, as the Comptroller's Management Analyst, Training Coordinator, Building Manager and as the department's "Jack of All Trades, master of none". Then in November 1993, with the impending closure of the yard, I was transfered under the Priority Placement Program to the U. S. Naval Academy. Currently, I am the Training Coordinator for the Public Works Department at the Academy. I invite former co-workers and friends to E-mail me. Thanks Dan Noble October 28, 1997 Name = Chuck Boyle Shop = Shop 31 EMail = Boyle_Chuck@HQ.NAVSEA.NAVY.MIL Nice WEB site. I am a former Shipyard apprentice and machinist from 1969 to 1979. I was a graduate of the Class of 1973. Many happy days in Shop 31, now many more busy days at NAVSEA Headquarters in the Submarine Hull, Mechanical and Electrical technical community. October 21, 1997 Name = Dave King Shop = Fire Dept/02 Shop/Security/PWCDET EMail = dkingsr@erols.com I think it's fantastic that this page was developed. As a semi-YardBrid I was always proud to come to work. Although I still work in the YARD at PWCDET I miss those OLD days of traveling through the yard and seeing the ships in their various states of completion. I transfered into the Fire Dept. from Lakehurst at the time of the Saratoga SLEP. Worked Cas-Con about her and was proud to be one of the people to ride her out of the dry dock and over to the piers for completion. This place is quiet, and very lonely now but hopefully in the future we will be able to see ship being built in and around DD 4 & 5 areas. I wish all my friends from THE YARD the best in the world and hope you're all safe and sound. Don't hesitate to write. thanks dave October 9, 1997 From: "N. M. Fogliani" Reply-To: nfoglian@motown.lmco.com Organization: Lockheed Martin Hi Julio, I like your web page, and I had many great experiences working with various activities at PNSY (Combat Systems, PARA, NAVSES, NAVELEX etc). I have a hypothetical question regarding docking or berthing facilites at PNSY. If I were to take an AEGIS class ship, bring it in locally to PNSY to set an AEGIS test team on board for integration test purposes are there facilities at this time to accomodate the work? Who can I contact to discuss this type of thinking? I'm out of touch with the many COTRs & contracting officers I dealt with in the past. Any suggestions? Thanks, and best of luck in your career. Neil M. Fogliani October 3, 1997 Name = Joe Quartullo Shop = Shop 99 (1979-91), Code 160 (1991-95) EMail = jquart19@aol.com My shipyard experiences can never be forgotten. It provided a place for me to grow and excel. It was a special place for so many like myself and can never be reproduced. I'm not the least bit excited about a private firm taking over because so many ex-yardbirds have moved on and the shipyard culure, with the long history and traditions of the Navy, has been broken forever. But the memories live on... Find any good Gedunks lately? Feel free to write me October 1, 1997 Name = Neen (Woods) Raspa Shop = Code 1101 Managment Engineering Office (Code 140) EMail = raspaj@dix-emh6.army.mil Yo .... I know by working in Code 1101 we were never considered "Yardbirds" ...but my heart is and always will be with the "Yard" ..... I'm presently at Fort Dix and consider myself fortunate to be working with some fine people (many of which worked "South on Broad") ... but no matter how long you work at a place ... you never achieve that "family" feeling you had at the "Yard" .... I miss the people terribly ... but I have such fond and beautiful memories .... friendships that will last forever ... Thanks you guys for the WEB Page .... the word is quickly spreading here at Dix about the "new place" on the web to catch up with our old friends ...... So in short .... all is well with the Raspa & Woods Families .... hope all is well with all the Yardbirds "surfin' the Web" ...... Smile ....... Neen September 29, 1997 Dear Ex-YardBirds, I am currently doing research on the shipwrights of Kensington (1740-1830). Among the families involved were the Grices, one of whom went on to become the Chief Naval Constructor of the US Navy. No biography has ever been written on him, and I am gathering material to remedy the omission. Like you, I am trying to keep a memory alive and give credit where credit is due, but I'm not having much luck. The Department of the Navy has little or nothing on him. Does anyone know whether there is any material on the Philadelphia Naval Yard in the 1840-1850's kept here locally? The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Maritime Museum have nothing. Did the Naval Base have any historical records of its own and where did they end up? One of my passengers said that they hold an open house at the yard, do you have any info reguarding this, I would sure like to take my kids through there. ald JDidome412@aol.com September 18, 1997 Name = Maryanne Julian EMail = Julian@mc.xerox Hello All, I'm sorry for the intrusion. I was a wife of someone who was stationed on the Oliver Hazzard Perry back in 1986-87. I also worked in the Ship yard barber shop for a short time. I was wondering if anyone out there could help me. I am trying to locate an old friend that used to be stationed there during this time frame. Or who can I contact to track this person down? He was at the time Radioman Jay Schroder. He use to live in the Baracs near the McDonads on the Base. Can anyone help me try to find him? Thank You Maryanne Julian September 10, 1997 Name = Marcus Jones E-Mail = marcus.jones@yale.edu Sirs, I am a graduate student in history at Yale University who focuses on the development of naval power in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Having long had a strong interest in the history of the US Navy, and a amateur fanatic's enthusiasm for the ships it sails, I have made a point of visiting as many of the museum vessels around the country as possible. Walking the decks and taking a good look around the ships has improved greatly my ability to grasp naval history at a gut level. In overflying the Philadelphia shipyards recently, I noted what appeared to be a pair of decommissioned Forrestal-class fleet carriers and an Iowa-class battleship moored tightly together. The ships had been stripped of machinery and markings, and seemed to be awaiting the scrapper's torch. Never having been aboard a postwar fleet carrier, I thought about how interesting it would be to take a closer look should the chance arise and before they become razor blades. I write in the hope that you might be able to provide me with the name, address, e-mail address, or phone number of someone whom I could contact about taking a look at some of the ships in the Philadelphia shipyard. Those I mentioned above most especially, but any would do, frankly. Might there be some head office, or someone whom you might know, simply, who would be able to give a student of naval history a chance to see some of those vessels? I really haven't the foggiest idea as to where I should start. Any help could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for your time. Name = Rodney K Sorrells Shop = 3rd Division. USS. John F. Kennedy CV-67 I know this page is for all the yardbirds. And I know I am not a yardbird. So excuse the interruption. I only wanted to personally thank all the yardbirds who worked on the JFK last time she was there. Ya'll done a superb job on fixin up the old girl. I hate it that they shutdown the yard. Good luck to you all. Except for shop 67 who always had there damn forklift in my way down on the dock. Thanks again everyone for a job well done. BRAVO-ZULU. MA-3 Sorrells August 24, 1997 Name: Joe Ricciardi Shop: 31 Hey Julio, I love the idea for the page. I think that lots of people would go to that page if they knew about it. I visited your page and it is a super start. It brought back memories for me. My time in Philly Shipyard were the best days of my life. Probably because of the people who worked there. I did work in 31 shop for from '78 to '89. Then I worked at Information Systems resource Office (ISRO) from '89 to '92. That's when I left for California. ISRO was the office that took care of paying everyone and material management and Job order number management (Production Control). I was with Production Control. I will put a link up to your Shipyard page on my home page as soon as I can. I love the idea. I hope it grows. Joe Ricciardi August 20, 1997 Name: Julio Casiano Shop: 26 I was talking to Charlie Kensil (06 shop I believe) today at work and told him I started a YardBird page. Some how we got on the subject of Yardbird nicknames. I don't know if this is just a PNSY phenomena but nicknames were prevalent at the 'Yard. I got the idea from him to start a YardBird nickname list on this page. Here's a few I remember at the moment. I'm sure more will come later: Harry the Hat Trash Mouth Plumb Bob RamButt Chester the Molester (he really wasn't, he just looked like him) Mousey If you have anymore, let us know. I'll start a special section just about that. August 19, 1997 My name is Julio Casiano. I started working at the yard on May 5, 1981. I was in 26 shop and started out as a WG-8. My first ship was the USS LaSalle. It was one of only two (I believe) naval ships painted white instead of battleship grey. That's because it was stationed in the Persian Gulf and white reflected the heat better. I worked my way up to the position of Welder Training Leader (WL-10) by 1987. I trained apprentices, tested new hires, requalified welders, and worked with the Welding Engineering department. My 12 years at the yard will always be in my memory because of the awesome experiences working on ships. The aircraft carriers were especially fascinating. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you climb down drydock 5 and look up from the bow of an aircraft carrier on keel blocks. Totally awesome! I'll probably be adding to this later. Once I read some experiences from other YardBirds, I'll have plenty of memories to share.
