Elizabeth Dunston Nolan, shipyard employee

Elizabeth Dunston Nolan, 97, the daughter of North Carolina sharecroppers, who worked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and for her church, died Saturday, July 9, at Saunders House in Wynnewood of complications from an earlier fall.

Mrs. Nolan, of West Philadelphia, was born in Franklin County, N.C., the eighth of 12 children of James and Harriett Dunston. In a sharecropper family, everyone was expected to work, she told her own daughters.

She and her siblings cared for the animals on the property and picked vegetables, cotton, and tobacco. The girls also were expected to do housework.

Because the segregated South did not offer quality education for African Americans, she lived with her married sister while attending South Philadelphia High School for Girls.

Her brother-in-law had to demand that she be allowed to take the college preparatory curriculum, because at that time black girls were routinely offered only a home economics curriculum, Mrs. Nolan told her family.

After graduating in 1937, she attended Virginia Union University in Richmond, working her way through while sending money home to help with the younger children.

She graduated in 1942, and returned to Philadelphia. Her first full-time job was caring for the children of a family on Rittenhouse Square.

At the peak of World War II, she worked briefly as a welder at the shipyard. After the war, she met and married William Nolan. The couple moved briefly to Phoenix, Ariz., then settled in Philadelphia, where they had two daughters.

In 1959, Mrs. Nolan and her husband separated and later divorced. She was rehired by the shipyard. Bolstered by graduate courses from Temple University, she rose to personnel administrator before retiring in 1980.

To keep busy and earn money, Mrs. Nolan became a travel agent and also seized the opportunity to travel.

"She never flew until she was 60, but once she started, she was a frequent traveler," daughter Adrienne Nolan Owens said.

Mrs. Nolan was a longtime member of the First African Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, supervised the nursery, and was a deacon and one of the first female elders. She also helped to assemble a church history, her family said, and for a time spearheaded an effort to feed and shelter homeless men at the church.

A strong advocate of social justice, she participated in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington in August 1963, and volunteered to be arrested on Aug. 29, 1985, during an antiapartheid protest in front of the South African embassy in Washington. The misdemeanor charge was dismissed.

She was a founding member of the African American Genealogy Group at the African American Museum, and an active member of the Parkside Historic Preservation Corp.

In 2013, she gave up her home and moved to Ohio to live near family, but earlier this year, she returned to Philadelphia. She was active until four months ago and mentally sharp to the end.

Besides her daughter, she is survived by daughter Angela Nolan-Cooper; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother; and nieces and nephews.

A viewing starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at the First African Presbyterian Church, 4159 W. Girard Ave., will be followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral service. Interment is in Rolling Green Memorial Park, West Chester.

Hello,
My husband worked for the Navy Yard years ago in the 80's. His name is Richard Padulese, Sr. I just saw that you have an obituary page and even though Rick passed of brain cancer three years ago, I was hoping that if you posted it, someone would have a fond memory to share with me. Since I can't make any more memories with him, I treasure every one I get. We were together since I was 15 and Rick was 17. Together 43, and married 40. I will include the obit if you would like to use it, and I also found a cool picture of the Yard Birds coming off the Ferry in West Deptford, NJ, where we lived down the street from the river. Deborah Bradley, 72, popular figure in West Philadelphia

DEBORAH BRADLEY was close to her niece, Jean Morgan, who lives in Virginia Beach, Va.

They talked on the phone every day, conversations that lasted hours. Deborah, a popular figure in her West Philadelphia neighborhood, lived alone and might have been a little lonely. But she looked forward to her chats with her niece.

Then on Jan. 21, Jean wasn't able to get her aunt on the phone. No answer at her number. Jean kept trying into the next day, to no avail.

She finally called Deborah's brother, Floyd Bradley, who sent his son, Kenneth Felton, to check on his sister.

Kenneth went to her house on Jan. 22 and discovered her body. She apparently had died on Jan. 21, possibly of a heart attack. She was 72.
"She had been to see a cardiologist," her brother said.

Deborah Bradley did clerical work for about 20 years for the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She retired at age 56.

She lived in the 400 block of N. 53rd St., where she was active as block captain. She directed cleanup projects and other community activities.

Her group of neighbors took dinners to the police at Christmas, and were always there to help the sick, the shut-ins and anybody else in need.

Deborah was also a member of Town Watch, keeping her neighborhood safe from crime.

"She was always into something," her brother said. "She was very outgoing. She didn't hesitate to tell you what was on her mind. She'd let you know it."

Deborah loved animals and always had pet dogs. She was also active with shelters, eager to make sure the animals were well cared for.

She was born in Philadelphia, the youngest of the seven children of Charles T. Bradley and Mary Peyton Bradley. She graduated from West Catholic High School and went to work at the shipyard.

She is survived by her brother and nieces and nephews.

Services: Were being arranged.

Leroy Malachi, 84, 37-year Naval Shipyard machinist

LEROY MALACHI Sr. didn't hesitate to grab a broom or a snow shovel and go out on his block on 61st Street near Race in West Philadelphia, to put his muscle into improving his neighborhood.

And Leroy had muscle to spare. In his youth, he won bodybuilding contests and titles like Mr. Pennsylvania, Mr. Maryland and Mr. New Jersey, his family said.

In the AAU Senior Nationals weightlifting event held in Philadelphia in 1956, he came in fifth in the heavyweight class with a combined lift of 865 pounds - press, 300, snatch, 250, clean and jerk, 315.

Leroy Malachi Sr., a 37-year machinist for the old Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, an Army veteran of the Korean War, and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Nov. 10. He was 84.

Leroy was a popular figure in his West Philadelphia neighborhood where he was an officer of the block committee and helped arrange events, especially those for the children.

He also was always available to help anyone who needed him, drawing on his skills in home improvement. He was there with hammer and saw and paint brush and, of course, he wouldn't have dreamed of charging anyone.

Leroy was born in Philadelphia to Ella and Jefferson Malachi. He graduated from Overbrook High School in 1948 and entered the Army. He served as a cryptographer in Korea.

After his discharge, he went to work in the shipyard. After 37 years, he was employed for a time in security at the Philadelphia Stock Exchange.

Leroy worked out in his home gym, at the YMCA and other facilities. He competed frequently in bodybuilding and weightlifting contests until he married the former Josephine Bussey in 1957.

Leroy was an avid reader, specializing in history going back to the Mayans, but with special interests in slavery, the Civil War, and more recent dramatic events.

He also liked to study the lives of black leaders through history, and was proud of the election of President Obama.

"He was happy he lived to see a black man as president," said his daughter, Patricia Lott.

"He was family-oriented, a strong Christian man, very kind-hearted. He enjoyed helping out in the neighborhood. Every summer, he helped plan events for the children with the block closed to traffic.

"He liked to keep the block neat and clean, and would go out with a broom or snow shovel to help out.

"The neighbors appreciated and loved him."

Leroy was a dedicated member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church and was always available for whatever the church needed done.

His wife died in 1994. Besides his daughter, he is survived by two sons, David Evans and Leroy Malachi Jr.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. tomorrow at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 5732 Race St. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial will be at Mount Lawn Cemetery.

After graduating, Jim took a job at a Volkswagen dealer at the Philadelphia auto mall. Jim got professional training as a mechanic in an effort to expand his job opportunities. His efforts paid off and he has been a mechanic at the Philadelphia Zoo for the last 15 years. Jim met Peg Devine at a Temple University St. Patrick’s Day dance at the Neumann Center. The couple were married on September 27, 1980 and lived at the Glenside address they still call home today. John 'Jack' Dempsey Jr., 78, former shipyard boilermaker

IF THERE were a mess of hard-shell crabs on the table and Jack Dempsey was present, you would have been advised to step aside.

"My brother could eat a bushel of hard-shell crabs all by himself," said his sister, Patricia George. "He would have cooked them himself. He loved to cook."

Jack's reported consumption of this sea delicacy might have been slightly exaggerated, but it testifies to Jack's love of life, and his appreciation of its bounty.

John "Jack" Dempsey Jr., onetime boilermaker for the old Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, a security officer at Philadelphia International Airport and a Marine Corps veteran, died Oct. 19 of complications of dementia. He was 78 and living in Bedford, Texas, but had lived most of his life in West Philadelphia.

Jack grew up on Budd Street in West Philly, playing halfball with his buddies. It was one of those close-knit neighborhoods where everybody knew everybody and formed a mutual-assistance bond.

He was born to John Dempsey Sr. and Lucille Dempsey, and graduated from Overbrook High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in February 1956 and served stateside.

Jack worked for a time in maintenance for Smith, Kline & French before joining the shipyard at the Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station in the early 1970s.

He worked as a boilermaker for more than 20 years. After his retirement, he went with Covenant Security Services, at International Plaza at the airport.

"Jack was a people person and he enjoyed his job there, as he liked working, staying busy and being around people," his sister said. "He loved his family and loved the family gatherings during the holidays. His nieces and nephews loved their 'Uncle Jack.' "

Jack was baptized at Monumental Baptist Church but was not a big churchgoer. However, he loved to read the Psalm 23 - "The Lord is my shepherd . . . " He would read it aloud and emphasize key words.

He loved music and dancing, and, into his middle years, could do a split on the dance floor. He liked to dress to the nines and never went out without a hat. He enjoyed visiting his brother, Eugene, in Cape May, N.J.

Jack liked to keep up with current events and never went to work without a Daily News folded in his hands. Even when he was ill, he insisted that the newspaper be brought to him.

"He could quote you dates, times and stories that he had read in the paper," his sister said. "Of course, he was happy that an African-American was elected president.

"He was a jovial man, always joking. His favorite expression was, 'You got that right!' "

Besides his brother and sister, he is survived by a son, Derek Dempsey; a daughter, Dawn Dempsey; two other sisters, Delores Lisbon and Sandra Berry, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by another daughter, Danita Dempsey, and two other sisters, Gwendolyn Dempsey and Geraldine Gist.

Services: 11 a.m. tomorrow at Monumental Baptist Church, 50th and Locust streets. Friends may call at 9 a.m.

Daniel E. Devlin III

Daniel E. Devlin, III, on August 4, 2014, of Deptford. Age 77. Loving uncle of Susan Allen, William Guidry, Mary Ann Olmo, Francis Guidry, Kathryn Mogck, Eileen Blemings and Kevin Guidry. Dear brother of the late Kathryn "Kitty" Guidry.

Unc grew up as the only boy in a family of girl Devlin cousins. He spent his formative years at Saint Joan of Arc Elementary School in Fairview NJ. As a teenager, Unc worked with his dad and Uncle Walt at "Devlin Brothers Paper Hanging and Painting Co”. Unc was a “cool” guy who had some creative ideas. He charged to park cars at his own sister’s wedding. (He made a bundle!)
Later he worked as a painter for Thomas Merryfield Inc. and then on May 5, 1980 he started in shop 71 “Painters” in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Unc enjoyed working at the Navy Yard and worked there until the Yard closed in 1995.
Outside of work Unc spent hours laughing and joking with his 7 nieces and nephews at 157 Peterson Blvd., In Woodbury Gardens, Deptford, NJ. Unc was always good for puzzles, riddles, goofy questions and funny nicknames. He enjoyed sitting on the front stoop smoking his Pall Mall cigarettes after dinner each night. Then he would shave and get ready to hit the town, which often meant walking to Three Points Bar or Half-Way Inn in Westville Grove.

Fast, sporty cars were a big part of Unc’s life. Remember his vanity tag: "R U GAME? Unc loved nice cars and took great pains cleaning and polishing them. Everyone knew not to mess with Unc’s car! He chauffeured for brides and grooms at Sue and Paul and Frank and Fran’s weddings. One of Unc’s claims to fame was the black and white car he bought from second baseman Dave Cash of the 1980 World Series Winning Philadelphia Phillies. He actually broke his big toe while dreaming that someone was stealing his car! (He jumped out of bed and smashed his foot while trying to stop the imaginary thief!)

Saturday mornings would find Unc reading the paper and picking his favorite horses for the Atlantic City Race Track and Garden State Park in Cherry Hill. He loved horses and the race track. He also loved classic chocolate tastykakes, Philadelphia soft pretzels, fried chicken TV dinners, and crabs. Unc loved coffee; we were NEVER supposed to clean out his mug.
Unc loved his nieces and nephews and his great nieces and nephews; and we loved him too. He was there for all of the major events in our lives.

And he never told us the answer to his favorite question: “Do you think the rain will hurt the rhubarb?”

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday 8:30 - 9:30 am at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Road, Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 am at SS. Peter & Paul RC Church, Washington Twp. Interment New St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr.

JOE Mastropaolo wouldn't let a little thing like turning 100 keep him from the pool tables or the dance floor.

He might not have been Minnesota Fats, but he could run a table with the precision of a much younger man, and proved it frequently after turning the century mark on Jan. 6, 2013.

As for dancing, he might not have been Fred Astaire but he could cut a rug, as they used to say, with the best of them, and always made it a point to dance with every lady in the house.

"He didn't want anybody to feel left out," said his daughter, Rita Ferrara.

That was also a hallmark of this man, who embodied the values of the old-fashioned gentleman, always putting others' needs ahead of his own.

Joseph Mastropaolo, a skilled tailor who worked for a number of local clothing firms, a welder's assistant for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard during World War II and a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Monday at age 101. He was a longtime resident of South Philadelphia.

Joe always credited a lifetime of exercise, vitamins and positive thinking for his longevity. His brother, Anthony, is following close behind. He's soon to be 97 and is still driving.

Actually, Joe was a rather sickly youth. Once, while hospitalized, a nurse clapped him on both ears when he became too demanding, giving him a lifetime of hearing problems.

One day, while attending the Sesquicentennial Exposition, in Philadelphia in 1926, Joe came upon a booth run by a man who gave the sickly kid some sound advice - start working out and eat healthy food.

For some reason, the advice struck a chord. Maybe Joe was ready to hear it, and it changed his life. He took the man's advice, and the rest is history.

"He was like Jack LaLanne," his daughter said. "He was taking vitamins before most people knew there were such things. And he started lifting weights."

Joe grew up at 8th and Mountain streets, in a household of eight, with three brothers and two sisters. He attended Southwark Elementary School until eighth grade, when he ended his formal schooling.

At the shipyard, he was working on the battleship USS New Jersey as a welder's assistant. The workers used to ask what they would do if they got stuck in the tight quarters of the hold. They agreed it would be advisable to take off their heavy clothing to climb out.

Sure enough, Joe was working alone in the hold when the regular welder was off, and he got stuck. He said later that he remembered the advice about removing his clothing. It saved him from what could have been a lengthy imprisonment.

After the war, Joe started working as a tailor, learning the trade on the job. He worked for various local companies for about 40 years before retiring.

Before he joined the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center about 24 years ago, he tried other senior centers and didn't like them. He found a home at the South Philly center and became its star member.

Fellow members gave him a rousing and surprising 100th birthday bash. After the honors, he went into the poolroom and shot a game with brother Anthony, winning, of course.

In their youth, Joe and Anthony performed in their own band, Chick Rays and the Arcadia, with Joe on the drums.

Joe married his childhood sweetheart, Minnie, in 1938. She died in 1988 at age 72.

"She was the love of his life," his daughter said. "He never thought about going out with anybody else."

Joe was a passionate dancer who took lessons at the senior center and mastered dances his daughter said she never heard of. He and his wife went out dancing every week, and he continued after her death.

"He was very outgoing, easygoing," his daughter said. "He worried about his family. He wanted to take care of them, be with them. He always did for others."

Besides his daughter and brother, he is survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Funeral Mass 10 a.m. tomorrow at Stella Maris Church, 10th and Bigler streets. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Cross Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, 1430 E. Passyunk Ave., Philadelphia 19147.
